Meet Duke! This little guy is playful, adventurous, athletic and super sweet. Could Dukesey Duke just be your family’s perfect match? Duke is a charming gentleman. He’s wonderful with other dogs and children, is house trained and does well in the car. His foster shares that he loves spending time at a local elementary school and cuddling with all the kids! He likes to “hunt” for rabbits, so a home with small animals might not be ideal. The right home for Duke will be somewhat active and willing to work on skills like basic commands and leash training. Duke might have one eye, but he’ll “only have eyes” for you! He’s looking for a best friend and companion with whom to share life’s many adventures. We strongly encourage basic obedience training for all our dogs, as it not only helps your dog blossom into a well-balanced canine citizen with good manners, but it also helps to form a lasting bond between your dog and the humans in your family. No ongoing issues expected at this time. Medical Note: This dog is being treated/has been treated for heartworm disease. Untreated heartworm disease can cause lasting damage to the heart, lungs and arteries, and can affect the dog’s health and quality of life even after the parasites are gone, possibly presenting as medical complications and/or new conditions in the future. Whenever possible, SOSARL advocates for following the American Heartworm Society guidelines for heartworm disease treatment as the safest and most effective methods; the active portion of this treatment protocol can take up to four months to complete. Once treatment is completed and the dog tests negative for microfilaria, the dog will be cleared to resume normal activity and will be ready to travel north and be placed into an adoptive home. This dog showed no symptoms of heartworm disease before or during treatment, and is expected to complete treatment with no complications. Please ask your Adoption Counselor for the specific treatment protocol used for and current status of this dog.
