02/19/25 10:56What did we do on today’s adventure: What a day! When the car door opened, I saw that it was full of squeaky toys! Ihopped in right away, picked my favorite one, sat down and squeaked away!Once we got to the trail, I had to be coaxed out of the car, because, really, I kinda wanted to take all the squeaky toys with us, but the human picked onethat we would take with us, and then off we went!I trotted along, sniffing every tree, rock, and leaf. Sometimes, I got a little tenseseeing another dog on the trail, but we gave them a wide berth and I washappily distracted by the human feeding me treats! I was very happy on this walk - we ran into some parts where we had to crossthis huge river (akavery large puddle). I just ran and splashed right throughand then I was so proud, I asked the human for a treat for my effort, which Iheartily ate.The best part? After the hike, I hopped right back into the car like a pro, readyto squeak my toys to my heart’s content. What should potential adopters know about me: Gustav is quick to engage with you. His trust in you is instant, eventhough I set things up in the car to make sure he had a good supplyof squeaky toys. He was completely quiet and calm in the car goingto and from the trail. He is reactive to seeing other dogs on leash, butif you give them a wide berth and help Gustav along with some treatsor a toy - he’ll follow you. Walking, he’s a 9/10 - minus the ‘reactingto other dogs’ factor. He checked in regularly with me and Imanaged to get a few kisses after water breaks. Sometimes he camein just to get petted. Gustav is a really sweet dog and is a happy-go-lucky guy – he’ll make a great and loving companion for his fureverfamily.Three words to describe me: Sweet, Gentle, Friendly11/20/24 06:51Dog Day Out ReportToday I: went to the Guadalupe River Trail with my friend and had a loooong walk, sniffing a ton of interesting scents! I spotted birds, geese, ducks, and more. Toward the end, I got a pup cup, and it was so much fun!Three Words to Describe Me are: Affectionate, Gentle, FriendlyNotes from My Walker: Gustav is a handsome older gentleman at the San Jose Animal Care Center. He’s gentle, affectionate, and friendly with everyone. I took him to the Guadalupe River Trail, and we had a fantastic time!I leashed and harnessed him with treats in the side yard at the end of my volunteer shift, just like usual. He was super easy—actual

10/31/24 11:28Reason animal needs rescue: Shy dog that would benefit from a calmer environment. Is currently on behavior medications to support anxiety.Type: MedicalImpound type: StrayAdditional notes: Dog would do better in a home environment. Nervous but the right home can help him build confidence. He has been improving in shelter. 02/08/25 13:11Clark Kent might be a bit shy at first, but don’t let that fool you -- this bouncy, playful boy has a heart of gold! Clark has two favorite things in the world: doggie playgroups and plush squeaky toys. He’s a big puppy at heart, always ready to dive into playtime. In fact, he’s known for his silly antics, like opening the toy chest to sneak away with toys; he’s quite the clever guy! This handsome pup is food and toy motivated, making training a breeze and loads of fun. He already knows “sit” and loves to show off his skills, especially if there’s a treat or game involved. While Clark might need a little patience in new situations, he warms up quickly with playtime or tasty snacks. He’s a social butterfly with dogs and a sweetheart with people, and he’s ready to find his forever family. If you’re looking for a playful, charming, and loyal companion, Clark Kent is your superhero in the making!09/29/24 17:44Goes to front of kennel when approach. Able to place a leash and take out without any issues. Non reactive while on leash and in yard. Showed some playful behavior - play bow. Take treats without any issues. Does run away when trying to approach to give injections. Distracted with treats during injections. Did great overall.08/27/24 16:12When approaching kennel, dog would lower head and run to the back of the kennel. While trying to leash, dog would back away and avoid the leash. Once leash, able to take out to yard. In the yard the dog was more interesting in the environment, did not show interest in the handler. Dog was non affiliative. Allowed basic petting, but still showed no interest in handler.

Story
Meet Olive! Olive is a 2 year old yellow lab/whippet cross who LOVES TO FETCH. You want a friend to play fetch with? This long dog mix is your girl. She also knows `sit` and `drop it` and is very treat focused. Does your dog need another dog? Well bring them in for a meet and greet, because Olive has lived with dogs and seems to do well with other canines her size. Now here`s the thing; Olive comes from a home with small children and as a very high energy/nervous personality (those long dog genes at work), that was not a good fit for her. Cats? Also a no. And while we`re not sure what happened, Olive is also leery of men and takes some time to warm up to them. However once she has your trust, she`s as golden as her coat.Olive is spayed, microchipped, and waiting for you to come down and see if you`re her forever family. Unsure? You can foster to adopt!

Story
Weight ~ 50 lbsCaprice is one of our dogs transported up from LA and she has a serious underemployment issue. She`s looking for a job in the herding, agility, scent work, dock diving, or flyball areas. She just wants to use those smarts she was born with, and also get her ya-yas out. When she`s not organizing your garage or balancing your checkbook, she just wants to hang out with you and watch Jeopardy, or veg out to a good rom-com. Caprice recently spent some time in a foster home, here is what they had to say about her: `She really loves looking out the window and people-watching. She also enjoys belly rubs, playing fetch, basking in the sun, and watching TV. She is super friendly with new people and warmed up to my roommates in no time. I will say, though, that she has a lot of energy, so my roommates and I try to walk her three times a day. When we walk, she tends to pull a bit at first, but once she gets a little tired, the pulling stops. She can be left alone for short periods, but she doesn’t love it. She knows basic commands like `sit,` `off,` and `gentle.` She is extremely smart and very trainable. Oh, and she also loves looking at herself in the mirror! She enjoys long walks and has no problem walking far. She is not food-aggressive at all and is very good about eating her food. She has shown some prey-drive on walks with small animals. She does well when putting on her harness and leash. When trying new things or visiting new places, she gets very excited and can be a little frantic at first, but after a while, she calms down. I think she needs a home that is very active and willing to take the time to get to know her and train her.`If you want a smart dog that`s also fun and sweet, call our adoptions desk or stop by during Browsing Hours: Wed-Sun 11-5.

Story
HI - I'M CHARM! I'm a sweet and playful 1-year-old Lab-Boxer mix in need of a foster or forever home! I was rescued from an overcrowded California shelter, and originally came from a hoarding case. I'm a happy girl who loves people and other dogs. I weigh only about 50 lbs and would make a great dog for an active single person, a couple or a family with older kids. I would do well with another dog in the home. Please email for an application.
