Name: Sassy Best Guess for Breed: Poodle and Yorkie mix Best Guess for Age: 8 years as of August 2024 SEX: FemaleApproximate Weight: 6 lbs 6 ounces but underweight Gets Along With: Sassy loves being around other dogs and lives peacefully with a cat. She has done well around her foster's young niece but we would be cautious about placing Sassy in a home with children under 12 yrs because she frightens easily around loud noises and abrupt movements. Currently Living at: DC area foster home Special adoption considerations: Sassy comes from a commercial breeding operation and has never lived in a home before. The breeding operation has been shut down, and this adorable pup now has the chance to learn what its like to be a real dog. Sassy is shy so MUST go to a home with a confident, welcoming resident dog. We would be cautious placing Sassy in a home with children under 12 years old because young kids can often scare shy dogs with their level of energy or noise. Children would need to be supervised closely to not leave doors open and should never walk the dog without an adult holding the leash. We would be happy to discuss this more in depth with any applicant. About Sassy: Sassy hasn't had a great start to life but she hopes her luck is about to change. Sassy has spent her whole life as part of a commercial breeding operation that has now been shut down. Just imagine being in a tiny cage 24 hours a day with little care, no human companionship, only brought out when it was time to be bred and having to have 2 litters every year. The Lucky Dog staff have been telling this sweet, shy girl all about what's in store for her - warm beds, gentle cuddles, romps through grassy parks, belly rubs, long walks with her forever family and someone to return her unconditional love. Sassy can’t wait to experience all of those things for the very first time! What My Foster Says About Me: Sassy has been one of the easiest fosters I've had - she's quiet, gets along with the other dogs, doesn't bother the cat, has done well with potty training as long as she gets frequent bathroom breaks, no problematic chewing, etc. She LOVES mealtime but isn't motivated by most dog or human treats, except for sharp cheddar cheese (at least that we've discovered so far). She's perfect in her crate and will put herself in there to snooze when I'm teleworking. She's made a lot of progress on the leash and does well on walks, though she's still working on being brave when there are unexpected loud noises. It's clear that she was neglected and didn't spend much time around people prior to coming to Lucky Dog. For the first several days, she was completely indifferent to me (preferring the company of dogs instead) but she's warming up slowly. She's even come up to me for pets a couple times, though still seems nervous while receiving attention. Sassy would do well with a patient adopter that's willing to help her come out of her shell. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $460, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter.
