Story
Animal Profile: Watermelon is an estimated 1-year-old 70 lb neutered male Husky/German Shepherd who was taken into the high-kill Downey Animal Shelter in Los Angeles as a stray, and never claimed. The shelter assessed him to be friendly with people and other dogs, and comfortable with handling with no medical or behavior flags, however he was euth listed for space after a long stay over one month in the shelter. This resilient boy got a one-way ticket to Seattle with a foster offer and will be joining Dog Gone Seattle on July 28. We will share more about him as we get to know him in foster care.  Foster Update: 'Mel' needs a dog savvy/experienced adopter that has a genuine interest in getting to know him and his quirks, will give hime to to warm up and set a strong foundation of rules/boundaries as he acclimates.  The pay off with this dog is immense.    Mel has developed some behaviors through all the processing of different humans and handlers that occurs during shelter and rescue life.  As a result, he has become a bit reactive towards newcomers. Once bonded to you, he is very loyal and trainable but will not be an easy first dog owner dog.  He would do best with a single person until the person has learned to manage him, otherwise, in his intense bond he tends to get defensive over his space when he is leashed.   Mel has several dog play friends here and does well de escalating other dogs.  What he lacks in confidence with some people he makes up for when dealing with dogs.   As his foster and trainer, I am eager to find someone help him see the benefit in connection as well as the more casual greetings through ritualistic protocols that he can rely on.  He needs a human to show him that connectivity and reliability is possible because at this point he has come to the conclusion that humans are not trustworthy nor reliable and has put him on the defense, like many of the shelter dogs I see.  Mel is a young, super fun and brilliant dog.  He is affectionate towards his person and has a great off switch in the house. For a husky type dog he really enjoys being home and is relatively easy to fulfill.  Mel comes with free training support for life and is currently fostered by Double Down Dog Training.  Mel's trainer has assessed that the benefits of being Mel's person far outweigh any risks and with time and patience he will make THE BEST ride or die companion IF you have a little grit and an a genuine interest in helping a shelter 'underdog' get ahead.  I look forward to teaching you everything I know about Mel and seeing him in a home of his  own someday.  Adoption Info: Adoption fee is $550 which includes spay/neuter, core vaccinations Rabies and DPPV, heartworm test if 6 months or older, microchip with lifetime registration, and health certificate. Adoption fee may be tax deductible as Dog Gone Seattle is a 501c3 organization. Apply Online: www.doggoneseattle.org/adoption-application< Animal History: Watermelon was picked up as a stray in southern California and taken to the high-kill Downey animal shelter where he was placed on the euthanasia list for space. With foster commitment he was tagged and will be transported to Seattle arriving 7/28/24. He will be available for adoption to the greater Seattle area after evaluated in foster care.January 31, 2025, 2:27 pm
