Story
He has been the most wonderful companion for me. I bought him as a friend for my husbands American Bulldog who when my spouse passed and could not stop crying for him. Since then I've almost lost my ability to walk due to a hip needing replaced and losing my health insurance when my job closed down. A car ran thru my home on Thanksgiving day and I've been in temporary housing ever since. I'll be moving in with my son in his small trailer and can't take the dogs. I'm asking if you can help me rehome Kobe before that happens. He's potty trained and used to family life. Please call Kathy at 302-983-1761November 5, 2024, 3:21 pm

Story
ABOUT TONIC Tonic is a 2-year-old bulldog mix that loves meeting new people! Tonic originally came to HAP as a puppy and was swiftly adopted. In their home, Tonic was severely attacked by another dog and returned to the shelter a year later. Despite being back at HAP, Tonic is still easy-going and sweet as ever! When he's not cuddling with our staff, he can usually be found zooming around outside. He has such a goofy personality and loves to play. His favorite toys are chewy bones. Tonic already knows basic commands and walks well with a harness. He is very food-motivated to learn, making the possibilities endless! He loves people, making him the perfect addition to your family! Tonic has participated in our Doggy Day Out program, here's how our volunteers describe him: "I had the best day out with Tonic! He is truly the sweetest goodest boy there is! He loves to stick his head out the car window...belly rubs, and cuddle on the couch. While we did pass some dogs on the other side of the street, Tonic remained calm and curious the entire time. Mr. Tonic is amazing and I hope he finds the loving playful family he deserves." - Molly "I took Tonic out, he knows how to tug on those heartstrings!! We went on a long walk and he was so good, just wanted to sniff everything! We got him a pup cup and went back to the house to play with some toys. He slept with his head on my lap the entire ride back to the shelter. I hope he gets adopted soon he is such a sweet boy!" - Brooke "We had a fantastic time with Tonic today. This boy is very special and I hope he finds he family soon! We took him to the Riverfront for a long walk. He wanted to say hi to every woman and child we passed and got some good pets from them. We ended our outing enjoying Starbucks and sitting in the sun. He was unsure of Gavin (adult male) at first, but warmed up snuggling him and giving him kisses! Not sure if sunbathing or the pup cup was Tonic's favorite part of the outing." - Taylor "Tonic did so well! He never barked at anything or anyone. I took him to my apartment, and he almost immediately grabbed a toy and jumped up on the couch with my roommate, getting love and chewing on a toy. He settled faster than any other dog I've taken home! I think he'd be a great playful dog, who also loves some cuddly couch time!" - Sawyer **Understandably, after a traumatic experience with a large dog, Tonic can be nervous to meet other dogs and we do recommend he ***Tonic is currently in foster, available for adoption by appointment! If you are interested in adopting Tonic, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific dog but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! All household members, including children and other dogs, must come along for the meeting to make sure it's a good fit. If a match is made, we encourage same-day adoptions! Our adoption fees include the animals' spay/neuter, microchip, age-appropriate vaccinations and preventatives, fecal testing, heartworm testing, and a small bag of food to get you started.

Hi-ya humans! I'm Chester! I have a heart as big as my head, and I have a pretty good-sized noggin! I don't use it all for smarts though.. I have lots of happy thoughts about running in the grass, yummy snacks, and of course, snuggles with my favorite people! I have a glass half full kind of mentality and can't wait to bust out of puppy prison once and for all!   I'm a super social butterfly, and have been great at events, I love meeting new humans and going for adventures! I am open to meeting other friendly doggies, too! If you have a dog who needs a friend, I volunteer as tribute for the job. Mostly, though, I can't wait to find a forever friend who will bring me home and love me forever! If you like two years old, 50ish pound, happy snorty boys, make sure you come meet me! I don't think you'll be disappointed. I have the smooshiest face and will surely keep you smiling and laughing - don't we all need some more happiness in our lives?!   Have Room in Your Home? Story
DAISY MAE came to us after she bit her owner in the face. It was a one-time incident however the family was afraid of her after the incident. We were her last hope as an alternative to euthanasia. In our care, Daisy has befriended a couple of our volunteers and is sweet as pie. However, we don’t trust her completely, even with people she knows because she can’t control herself when she gets overstimulated. The original incident happened when they had moved into a new home and Daisy was over excited/stressed and a delivery man came to the door. Her mom attempted to put her into a crate and she resisted and jumped up alligator-style. We are committed to help Daisy even though we understand she may never find a forever home. For the present time being, we are her family and are continuing to try to help her make progress. We will accept applications from exceptional families who have dealt with similar dogs in the past successfully. Daisy needs to be an only pet and although she was fine with the children in her home, because of the bite she needs to be in an adult only home! If you would like to love Daisy from afar, please visit out website and use the PayPal link to support us in her care. www.CompAnimals.org. Thank you!November 3, 2024, 10:40 am

Story
McNugget is diminutive 4 year old American Bully who was used for breeding. He is a laid-back guy who probably spent most of his time in a kennel. McNugget is new to the rescue, so we are still getting to know him. He has a little OCD playing with his food bowls, probably because they were the only toys that he had. He pretty much ignores the other dogs in his foster home – still trying to find his place. McNugget weighs just 32 pounds and should be a healthy weight at 35 to 37.  He walks well on a leash and rides quietly in the car. Because of his OCD quirks and not growing up in a home, we would prefer he not be in a home with small children or a home that is busy with kids activities right now, so that they can concentrate on Nugget and gently assimilating him into a normal lifestyle and showing him what a dog's life was meant to be! McNugget is scheduled to be neutered at the end of September, and will be officially available at the beginning of October. Accepting applications now at www.companimals.org. McNugget will have pre-surgical bloodwork run before his neuter, receive his core vaccines, heartworm and tick borne disease, test, as well as microchip. Adoption $350. November 3, 2024, 10:40 am

Story
ABOUT MR. BONES This handsome, loving boy had quite the rough beginning. Mr.Bones was found tied to our fence, emaciated and struggling to stand. Upon brining him inside, our team noticed several large and life-threatening lacerations. Our veterinary team leaped into action to provide surgery he needed to save his front limb and prevent infection in his other wounds. Despite his size, this skinny guy had more strength than we ever imagined! Mr. Bones handled surgery like a champ and even gave our team kisses afterwards, as if he was happy to be helped. Despite all he endured in his past, Mr. Bones doesn't hold that against anyone, he loves making new friends, and is the happiest guy around. We estimate him to be around 10 months old. He has regained some much needed weight and is just over 80 pounds! Now that he's feeling better, he has become quite the active and playful guy. When he's not zooming around our fenced fields, you can usually find him nose deep in an enrichment toy to keep his mind busy! He is working on basic puppy manners, such as mouthing and jumping. Mr. Bones is very food motivated to learn and already knows some commands. He isn't always aware of his big boy size and strength, so older kids or adults who can understand he means well would be best. He can be selective with other pups and would do best in a home with no cats! To help monitor him during recovery, Bones went into a loving foster home, here's what they had to say about him: "Mr. Bones is acclimating to a foster home setting wonderfully! We have been working on redirection training (treat scatters "go find it, "get your toy, "leave it, etc) while using "Yes! or "Good! as his reward with a treat. He learned "Sit and "Down extremely fast. Definitely exhibits more balanced behavior when on an enrichment plan throughout the day (Kong, slow feeder, snuffle mat, 1:1 yard time). We love having him here and know he will make a family very happy!" If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. ABOUT HANKY PANKY Meet our most lovable, snuggly guy! Hanky Panky is a 1-year-old terrier mix who loves hanging with people and other dogs. Hanky came to HAP from a high-intake shelter in Alabama when they no longer had space for him. His first few days in our care, he was a little nervous and scared. However, we quickly learned his personality is larger than life and he loves people! Hanky is a submissive, social pup and has enjoyed spending time with our volunteers, participating in our Doggy Day Out program. Check out what our volunteers had to say about him: "Had a great doggy-day-in with Hanky Panky! He liked to play, tried some of the agility equipment, and loved to tan in the sun while getting pets. He is a very good boy who is excited to have someone near him or petting him. After getting all of his energy out, he enjoyed lying on the blanket and watching cars go by. He is a gentle, calm boy that would be a great addition to a family." - Megan "He was playful and was playing with my hand and the leash and kept rolling over. I picked him up and put him in the car, he loved being in the car and was looking out the window. We went to Bellevue Park. He was fine getting out of the car! Once we started walking he loved smelling everything. He really enjoyed being on a walk and was very good on the leash. He didn’t pull at all and kept checking in with me. We mainly walked in the trails in the woods. There were dogs and people he saw at a distance and he was fine. After Bellevue we went to Caufiell estate and took another walk. I did have to pick him up to put in the car but he had no trouble getting out. Stopped at the ice cream shop for a pup cup which he loved! He fell asleep on the ride back to the shelter. Hanky Panky was such a good boy and great walking partner! I hope homebody adopts this sweetheart!" - Autumn If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire!
