Story
Max is 4 years old, only needs his yearly rabies, & could also use a good grooming. He doesn’t like his ears or nails to be handled & he’s too big to fight. He was a humane custody intake at the Philly SPCA which is where I adopted him. He has both physical & emotional scars. He’s a bit hand-shy & seems to like women more than men, but will warm up to men slowly. He has a BIG bark & it’s initially very scary but only barks until he has a chance to sniff you & then he’s done. He’s 120 lbs of good boy. He needs someone experienced with big dogs. Solid on basic manners. He does NOT like other dogs. This is not negotiable. He was fighting other dogs in his last home. He likes my cat just fine. He’s house trained. I have a progressive neuromuscular disease & my muscle function has declined recently + a double whammy of osteopenia. I’ve fallen 2x in the last few weeks taking Max out. He needs someone who’ll give this GOOD BOY the life he deserves. I’ll send all food/toys/gear/crate-rare used

Story
PLEASE NOTE! Unless stated otherwise, our dogs and puppies are located in Arkansas, and transported to the north/northeast once adopted. We do occasionally have dogs/puppies placed in foster homes in the north/northeast. In the cases where the pet is somewhere other than Arkansas, it will be noted beside the name of the pet.1/6/25 Athena is currently enrolled at Paws in Prison learning all the things! She works daily with inmates on the basics and even a few tricks! Each week the inmates meet with a certified dog trainer. After 8 weeks she will graduate with her Canine Good Citizen Certificate. She started in December and will graduate in February. Here's what Paws in Prison has to say about her- 'When Athena is finally getting the spoiling she deserves, she won’t say a word about it. But there will be signs. She is a very happy dog these days. Athena is a mix of German shepherd and Husky, and she has one blue eye and two pointy ears to prove it. She’s about 1 year old and weighs about 50-60 pounds. Athena is a full-fledged beauty. Very nice girl with an upbeat disposition. She engages easily and wants to be included. She’s also very smart and pays attention to everything. Love her and she’ll love you back ten times more.'  Her backstory- Athena is a survivor. She was an owned dog, and her mom really loved her. However, the home was not a happy one for mom, because she was suffering through domestic violence. Things escalates, and Athena's mom had to take her kids and get out quickly. Unfortunately, the place she was going to did not allow pets, so she had to leave Athena behind. The abuser then chained Athena to a tree. There she sat, for about 6 weeks or so, with no shelter. Sometimes, he threw a little food out to her, but most days, he didn't. She was hungry thirsty, cold, and most of all...lonely. But she's safe now and lonely no more.  Athena is a very good girl. She minds very well and is eager to learn. She is very receptive to affection and training as well. Athena was already spayed when we got her in rescue, but sadly, she did test positive for heartworms. While she is at Paws in Prison, she will start her 30 days of doxycycline pre-treatment, then will be treated for heartworms after she graduates the program. She will be available for adoption after she is treated. Athena is only about a year old and in good health otherwise, so we don't expect any complications, and she should make a full recovery. She is reportedly 1/2 German Shepherd, 1/2 Husky. About 50-60 pounds. She is good with other dogs. Located in Arkansas, but transport is available. I won't go into details; I'll just leave it at that. They have been in rescue for about 5 weeks now. They are ready to find homes of their own. We don't know their breed- they are very mixed and likely have different dads. They are about 3 1/2 months old and seem to be medium size. They are all sweet, slightly shy babies who love affection and play time. Please consider one of these babies for your family! Will probably be on the smaller side of medium sized, 30-35 pounds when full grown. He is neutered, UTD on age appropriate vaccines, microchipped, and started on flea/tick and heartworm prevention. We do occasionally have dogs/puppies placed in foster homes in the north/northeast. In the cases where the pet is somewhere other than Arkansas, it will be noted beside the name of the pet. It's almost Valentine's Day! Are you looking for that special someone? Well look no further... here she is. Her name is Sweetie. 4 legs are better than 2. She's probably a much better kisser than any human you'll find too. Ok but really....check this beauty out! Sweetie couldn’t be a more appropriate name for her. She is the sweetest dog who just loves to cuddle and be close to you. She seems to be about a year old and we believe is a German Shepherd mix. She was originally found as a stray with her 2 brothers, and taken in by a good samaritan. She weighs about 65 pounds. She has seen the cats in her foster home and will just look at them. She gets along great with other dogs. She is a very gentle dog and I think would do good with kids of all sizes. She walks fairly well on a leash but could use some more work on it. She likes to sleep in bed but would be just as happy with a couch or dog bed. She is taller than she looks in her pics. She is a very smart dog and is food motivated. Her first day here she would not sit when given the command but by the next morning she would sit on command. She does fairly well with stay also. She is still getting used to having to be on a leash to go outside and having to do her business while on a leash (she previously was in a foster home where the majority of her time was spent outside, so going out on a leash/not in a fenced area is new to her). She has had a few accidents inside but I am sure once she gets used to having to be on a leash while going or in a home that has a fence, the accidents will stop. She's a smart girl, she'll get it! We have tons more pictures of her but can only put 4 on this site. Email us or check us out on facebook to see the other pictures.  She is spayed, UTD on vaccines, microchipped, heartworm negative, and on flea/tick and heartworm prevention. In New England. Age: 3 months Size: 15 lbs Estimated breed: Shepherd/Pit bull mix   Introducing our Gilmore Girls litter! Rory had a rough start to life. Her mama was a german shepherd who lived in a outdoor kennel and became pregnant by a stray pit bull. When Rory was only a few weeks old, her mama got loose from the kennel and was unfortunately struck and killed by a car, leaving Rory and her siblings orphaned. Her human owners kept them fed and as warm as they could outside, but Rory deserves more than that. We agreed to take her into rescue so she can find a forever home!    Rory is 3 months old and weighs around 15 lbs. She is a german shepherd/pit bull mix, so we anticipate she will be a large dog when full-grown. She loves playing with her siblings, meeting new people, and learning everything a young dog needs to know. She's in foster care with children and a cat and does great with them both. Rory is looking for a forever home with the time, patience, and love to train her into the best girl she can be!    To adopt Rory, please apply on our website! https://www.nirvanaanimalrescue.org/adoption-application   Please note we cannot guarantee the age or breed of any of our dogs. You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. 2nd Chance 4 Life Rescue is primarily a sanctuary for senior and medically needy dogs.  Every once in awhile you will see younger dogs but for the most part our dogs live out their life at the ranch at the request of their previous owners or their owners families.  We have many sponsorship dogs.  Our sponsors love to keep in touch and know how their sponsored fur buddy is doing :)When we have foster families we are thrilled to be able to take adoptable younger dogs :)  So if you have ever thought about becoming fosters please feel free to go to our foster/volunteer page and fill out an application. The Ranch located at 737 Taylor Rd., Windsor, PA is always looking for dedicated volunteers that will commit to at least a 2 hour shift per week at the rescue.  Volunteers work in play yards, help with laundry and feeding.  Some enjoy landscaping or carpentry projects and some like to bake for the healing center visitors :)Thank you for supporting our mission of caring for the elderly and medically needy souls that need us!UPDATE 3/5/2024:  Buddy is having some issues being 'stiff' but as long as you don't have stairs he does great.  He does guard his toys but if you do a trade with a snack he will give them up :)  Looking for a GS experienced ownerUPDATE:  Buddy is looking fantastic!!  He is a little 'stiff' in his old age but I told him its OK so am I!  He LOVES attention, he likes his toys and he is great with the dogs although I think he would be just as happy as an only dog he does fine with all the dogs here at the ranch :)I can only imagine how Buddy must have felt...  Like no one cared, defeated, ready to give up, a banquet for fleas and tics :(  It took us quite a while to get him back to health and still he deals with ear infections from repeated ones not being treated :(  No worries now big man you are loved and valued!Buddy you have your 2nd Chance and we are going to give you an amazing life!!REQUIRES FENCED YARD!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet. Please fill out an adoption application: Adoption application (Dog) Adoption Application (Cat)   Please understand we do not adopt out dogs to families with children under the age of 5. We do not adopt dogs to renters. Some dogs will have fence requirements while others may not.   A pet is a lifetime commitment. The dogs and cats in our system find themselves there, for the most part, because their humans did not have the same loyalty to them as they did to their owners. We do not take the adoption process lightly, and will do everything in our power to make sure the animal is placed correctly the first time around for your sake and theirs. Thank you for choosing to adopt not shop!October 14, 2024, 6:08 pm

Story
This is Roxy she is 4 years old. We rescued her. She’s a very sweet dog. She comes with a lot of anxiety and a lot of energy. We are not sure what she went through as a puppy. I hate to be even making this page right now. She deserves more and me and my boyfriend are a young couple. Unfortunately, with the market, we cannot afford a house and she deserves a yard somewhere where she can run around and get her energy out. We take her for lots of walks and she struggles to use the bathroom outside while being hooked to a leash. She does use the bathroom if she’s unleashed. Unfortunately, we live in an apartment where we can’t have her off leash. . We were just trying to rescue a dog And help her not realizing that her breed comes with a lot of energy. That’s the border collie and the German Shepherd. We love her and she’s a good dog, but she needs a family that can offer her a little bit more that we can. She is great with kids and other animals as well.

Story
Hi there! My name’s Athos, and I’m a big, playful boy with a huge heart ready to share with my forever family. I’m super smart, always eager to learn, and I love being active, especially outdoors—no matter the weather! I’m also a champion cuddler and will nudge you for pets and snuggles because I adore affection. I’ll admit, I’m still figuring out all the house rules, but I’ve made great progress and love showing off when I get things right. I thrive with people who are patient, active, and ready to help me continue learning and growing. I dream of a home where I’m the only pet so I can give you all my love and focus. If you’re looking for a loyal companion who’s ready to be your best friend, I can’t wait to meet you!

These pups are in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania too!

PLEASE NOTE! Unless stated otherwise, our dogs and puppies are located in Arkansas, and transported to the north/northeast once adopted. We do occasionally have dogs/puppies placed in foster homes in the north/northeast. In the cases where the pet is somewhere other than Arkansas, it will be noted beside the name of the pet.12/14/24 STILL AVAILABLE 10/21 Zora, Maud, Klaus, Lars,  Edda, and Petra were born to a stray dog who has been staying in the same area for several years. This is her 4th litter. People in the neighborhood feed her, but no one can seem to catch her to have her spayed. We didn't find out about this situation until last week, when we were contacted by an 86 year old lady who is the one taking care of these pups. The mama dog brought these pups up to her house when they were only a few weeks old, and Ms. Fontaine has been trying to find a rescue to help with them since then. Unfortunately, all rescues in our area are overwhelmed and no one was able to help her. I went over to meet and vaccinate the pups last week. They are 5 months old. They are very scared and timid. Ms. Fontaine is able to pet all of them and even allows them in her house. They love her, and she loves them, but we are all afraid with her age, these pups are creating a fall risk for her. They do not jump on her, but wec are worried about her tripping over them. We would love to move them to other rescues if anyone knows a rescue who could take 1 or 2. They are also available for adoption, but adopters will need to be aware that they will definitely be a project. They will take a long time to gain confidence and build trust. They are NOT aggressive at all. I was able to give them all shots with not even a growl from any of them. They just hide and tremble. I do believe they have potential to be good pets, but it is going to require a lot of patience and work.  If anyone is interested in giving one of these pups a  let us know. We are working on getting them all fixed so they wont continue adding to the population. We will also continue efforts to trap the mama dog so we can stop the steady flow of pups.  We are all so overwhelmed. And it is next to impossible to find homes for dogs like these. Spayed/neutered UTD on age appropriate vaccines, microchipped, and started on flea/tick and heartworm prevention.  Please consider giving one of these babies a good home. In the cases where the pet is somewhere other than Arkansas, it will be noted beside the name of the pet.12/14/24 STILL AVAILABLE! 10/21/24 Zora, Maud, Klaus, Lars,  Edda, and Petra were born to a stray dog who has been staying in the same area for several years. They will be so loyal and loving. Located in Arkansas, but transport is available. Adopter must be able to pick up or arrange for someone to pick up for them at one of the following times/locations.
