Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Meet Abel. He is a wonderful dog who is completely house trained, knows many commands (including play dead!), and has great recall. He loves having a job, especially chasing geese off our grass area and sending them into our pond, then returning to us with a sense of accomplishment. Abel is a protector during deliveries and is sweet with his foster parents. He loves cuddling and is generous with his hugs, burying his head in our laps. He loves to please his humans. Abel plays with his rope like a fiend and loves chasing balls, frisbee, sticks, and toys. Abel does best with proper and slow introductions and people who are secure around dogs. He enjoys playing fetch with a small female lab and gets along well with smaller female dogs, given proper introductions. We are also working on his leash reactivity during walks. While Abel is generally friendly, he has shown some discomfort around children and in certain situations. He is not fond of being poked or picked at so would suggest kids be a no for Abel. With that being said, visits to the vet might be a challenge so patience, kindness and time will be needed to make Abel comfortable. Abel loves being petted, receiving belly rubs, and is fine with baths and brushing. His previous owner mentioned he is okay with having his nails clipped, although I haven't tried that myself. Abel is a great dog who thrives with understanding and patient care. Abel is from an owner surrender. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Athena grew up in the beautiful White Earth reservation, where she enjoyed a loving and carefree lifestyle with her previous owner. She experienced the joy of sleeping in bed with her owner and running freely through the countryside. Athena has always known freedom and affection, even during her time as a new mother when she could come and go as she pleased. After the passing of her beloved owner shortly after her puppies were born, Athena and her little ones found temporary shelter at animal control up North. At just two weeks old, Athena and her 12 puppies were welcomed into our home, where she proved to be an exceptional and devoted mother, successfully weaning all her babies. We adore Athena and her gentle, calm nature.   Athena would thrive in a home with a 6-foot fence or a spacious yard where she can safely explore. She would benefit from training on a leash, transitioning from a long lead to a shorter one. While she's had a couple of potty accidents, she is incredibly sweet and calm, and with a little extra attention, she will undoubtedly flourish. Athena deserves all the love and attention you can give. An ideal home for Athena is one where she can receive the care and devotion she needs to truly thrive. Atheena is from a local reservation. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. *Bonded to Miley*Harley once had a family, sharing her days with her 'sister'’, Miley, from another litter. Sadly, their world turned upside down when their family came upon some hard times that led them to Ruff Start Rescue. Harley is a connoisseur of life's comforts, delighting in lounging on the couch and showering you with enthusiastic face-licks when you return home. She's a social butterfly, eager to play with children of all ages and thrilled to make new friends, be they human or canine. While her heart yearns for love and attention, she gracefully respects the boundaries set by the foster home cats. When it comes to walks, Harley can be quite spirited. Her strength is impressive, and she tends to follow her nose rather than her eyes. She's well-behaved with a harness and understands that it's her ticket to adventure. In essence, Harley would thrive in just about any home.  Harley is bonded to Miley so they must be adopted together. Harley is from a local impound. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Homer was born on the beautiful White Earth reservation on 4/22/2024. Sadly, shortly after the puppies were born, their beloved owner passed away. The mother and her 12 puppies found temporary shelter at animal control up North. At just two weeks old, they were welcomed into a Ruff Start Rescue foster home. The rescue believes the puppies to be a lab/German shepherd mix, but since the father is unknown, the exact breed is uncertain. The mom appears to be a lab mix, and the pups have some German shepherd markings, but as a rescued puppy, there's no birth certificate to confirm the breed. Homer is from a local reservation. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. “Leonard is a really good dog”, are the words uttered by everyone who has spent time with Lenny.  He’s a friendly and happy boy who enjoys meeting people and other dogs. He’s also a gentle boy who knows not to jump up on people (although he sometimes can’t help himself if he gets super excited), so I think he’d also do fine around young children. While Leonard does pretty good on walks with no reactivity issues, he can pull a bit at the start due to excitement. His prey drive seems to be limited to things he can chase. He ignores turkeys, but, boy, does he think that rabbits look fun to chase. Based on his desire to chase, I’d say cats are a big NO for this guy. Leonard is a good-natured boy who loves to run and play and have fun. I think he would love another dog buddy. He gets along well with all my dogs as well as every foster or guest doggo that has come to stay with us. One of the reasons Lenny gets along so well with other dogs is that he will mirror their playstyle. He even accommodates my older dogs by adopting a very gentle playstyle when interacting with them.  He’s a young and smart dog who does best when his physical and mental needs are met. He enjoys going on walks and exploring the outdoors. He also LOVES to run, whether it’s playing chase with other dogs around the park or jogging with you around a lake. If he’s running, he’s happy. Oh, and he loves water! He thinks splashing in the kiddie pool is a blast. He doesn’t seem to know how to swim yet but we’re working on it!  Leonard does best in a kennel when he is home alone, otherwise he’ll likely get into things. He will sometimes bark in protest when I leave the house so a home with shared walls would probably not be a good fit.   If you’re active and looking for an adventure buddy, then Lenny might be your boy! Leonard was an owner surrender. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application.
