Story
Chase is a 7.5 yr old male black lab, shepherd, husky mix with blue eyes- he's a big guy at 86#, and this is his ideal weight. He previously lived with people that were happy to have him in the family, but didn't really spend any time with obedience training - Chase knows his name but no commands. The foster is teaching him to sit for a treat. He is also learning leash manners - still tends to pull if he wants to check something out. He enjoys time outside, and being part husky, he will vocalize to you when he wants to go out. Actually, he also does that when he wants treats and pets......you just have to figure out which one he wants. Because he can get over a 4 ft. high fence, Chase needs a 5 ft fenced enclosure so he can safely be outside for extended periods, or he will need to be on a tieout. Chase enjoys walks, and will chase after small critters in the yard. There are 2 felines in his foster home and he ignores them. He is almost indifferent to the other dog in his foster home, and would be perfectly content to be the "only dog". He enjoys chewing on bones (tends to bury them when he is done chewing) and on rope toys; some interest in balls, but not in retrieving them. Chase likes some attention from his people, especially pets and belly rubs - he's a dog that will sit close to you, but not necessarily snuggle. Well behaved indoors, and has free run of the house when left - thus far he's been left for about 4 hrs. but the foster expects he would be fine up to 8 hrs. Chase is housebroken, and will come over to you, "talk", and walk to the door when he needs to go out. He sheds seasonally, and will need brushing in the spring to remove the winter undercoat he develops. I don't know if he has ever lived with children - Chase is a mature dog, and not interested in playing. Chase is neutered and current on distemper and rabies vaccinations. His microchip is registered to Second Chance. Chase has a $275 adoption fee. If you are interested in meeting him, call 651-771-5662.

Story
Did you know the great jazz singer Billie Holiday had a beloved dog named Mister? Mister was her constant companion and so loved there was even a children’s book written about them. Well, we think we have a pretty special Mister too and he is looking for his forever home. Mister came to us from Texas where he spent 240 days at a shelter waiting to be chosen by a family, likely because black dogs are the last ones to be chosen. The shelter in Texas called him a “gold star” dog because of his sweet demeanor. Second Chance saw his glowing profile and soon Mister was on a transport making the long trip to Minnesota. This handsome guy is about 2.5 years old and weighs 70#. Mister settled into life in Minnesota well and like many of the Texas dogs we take into the program, is delighted by snow. He’s moderately active – a daily walk or two is needed but he doesn’t require an excessive amount of exercise. Mister LOVES his foster mom, and we suspect he will bond quickly with his forever family. He is currently the only dog in the household but does well with the other dogs at doggie daycare. We think he would be just fine being the only dog in the house since he tends to seek out people wherever he goes. Mister loves toys, but quickly shreds soft toys. Long lasting bones to chew or puzzle toys tend to keep him entertained longer. True to his lab roots, this guy likes to eat. To make sure he doesn’t inhale his food, Mister’s foster mom feeds him using a slow bowl. If you don’t have one of those, adding some tennis balls to the bowl works well. Even though he devours his food, he isn’t much of a beggar and doesn’t counter surf. Also true to his lab roots, he likes to swim in the pool at daycare! We imagine he’d appreciate a chance to swim here and there, whether it’s a pool or a lake! Mister is unsure about the fast movements and variety of noises made by small children. Because of that we feel he would fit best in a home with no children or older children who are used to living with a dog. He likes to cuddle, but on his own terms – he doesn’t always appreciate being hugged but will seek out his person when he’s ready for affection. Mister is reliably house trained and barks appropriately. He does well in the house when left alone and has never needed a kennel. Mister loves to sleep with his foster mom at night and would likely try to share the bed in his forever home as well. Mister is neutered and is current on rabies and distemper vaccinations. His heartworm and tick panel were all negative, and he has a microchip. His adoption fee is $375. If you’re interested in learning more about our gold star, Mister, please call Second Chance at 651-771-5662.

Story
Maxx is a very handsome 1 yr old, 92# pryenees/lab mix that presented as an unclaimed stray, but has been in his foster home for a while and we know quite a bit about him. Maxx is good with other dogs, and enjoys the other young canine in the home, as well as all the dog friends he has made at the dog park. The highlight of each day is the trip to the dog park, where he is a hit with the people and with other playful dogs – this gives him the opportunity get a fair amount of exercise daily, which all young dogs need. Max has been left for 8 hr workdays, and is so excited when "his" person returns home that he does zoomies and jumps to greet (foster working on correcting this) . Starting out, Maxx will need to be crated when left, or he gets bored and into mischief (can be bribed to go in with treats if necessary). Once he learns the household routine he might not need confinement. No experience with cats. His foster dad says that Maxx is “all love”. He enjoys being with people, especially if they will snuggle with him. At night, Maxx either sleeps in bed with his person, or on the sofa. If you are receptive, he will try to fit into your lap when you are sitting in a chair – he just doesn’t realize how big he is. There aren't any children in his foster home, but we think he would really enjoy an older child – perhaps 10 and up (so they wouldn’t accidentally get knocked over in play). Chews are a really big hit - be sure he has a good supply. The vet doesn’t want him chewing on rawhides or bones– says they are too hard for a dog’s teeth – so perhaps something like nylabones. Leash trained - will pull some if he sees another person or dog he would like to meet, but is manageable. Responds to "sit" and "lay down" commands; he comes when called if he's not too busy doing something else (enjoys a treat reward when he comes running back). His recall is good at the dog park, but if he got out of his yard we expect he would go exploring. A fenced in yard would be a must so he can get some exercise and play time - he presently has another playful dog to be out with. If his people worked outside of the home, another dog in the home would be required. If his person was able to be home with him much of the time, another dog would be ideal, but not required. He respects the 4 ft fence. As with any young dog, he would benefit from obedience classes. Rides well in the car - likes to be in the front seat next to you, so might need to tether him if you want him to stay in the back. Doesn't seem to have an interest in toys for self-entertainment......only to use to tease other dogs to play tug or to chase after him. Barks appropriately. Housebroken. Maxx is a wonderful young dog, and is best matched with an active person/family. He would thrive in a home where he wouldn't need to be left for long work days. Preference will be given to someone who can also continue taking him to the dog park at least a couple times a week. He does minimal shedding, and enjoys being brushed. Maxx is neutered, and current on vaccinations (including lepto). His microchip is registered to Second Chance. The heartworm test and tick profiles are negative. Call 651-771-5662 if you are interested in meeting him. His adoption fee is $325.. Considering Maxx for adoption?

Story
We adopted Ruby in April of 2023. A family friend had to get rid of her due to a busy household and work schedule. She was about 6 months old when we adopted her and is now about a year and half. She is a very, very sweet dog and loves people, including children, whom she is quite gentle with. She is half lab, half pit. She loves long walks, chew toys and napping with her pet family. She is a very affectionate dog and loves being petted and cuddling. We had her fixed last May, and she is in excellent health. We want to keep her, but our HOA started to crack down on the number of pets home owners can have. We have another dog that is older and in declining health and we wouldn't feel right trying to find a home for her. We love Ruby but we know that she has many good years ahead for the right family. She is healthy, happy, and loves people of all ages. Truly a great dog for any home.
