Story
Meet Riley. This sweet pup was rescued from life as an outside dog living on a property with 16 other dogs running free. The owner would feed them but did not provide medical care, preventive protection, or spay or neuter his pets, so puppies were inevitable. He became overwhelmed when another litter of puppies arrived and reached out to rescue for help. Thirteen dogs were taken in by multiple rescues and the 4 adults that remained with the owner have been spayed and neutered to prevent more litters. Riley came into our care heartworm positive, which is not unexpected for an outside dog who has been living without protection. She’s already been treated and was fortunate to be a young, healthy dog when rescued. She’s been living in a foster home for the past few months learning what home life is all about. She was fostered in South Carolina during her heartworm treatment, living with large dogs and having regular exposure to the visiting grandkids. Riley is currently being fostered with two small Terriers who accepted her from day one and a foster mom and dad who truly adore her. Riley is a submissive pup who is excellent with other dogs and needs a dog buddy in her new home. She is shy and more of a follower who would do best with a pup role model in her life. Overall, she is a pretty laidback dog who enjoys her walks...She comes alive when it's walk time and has good leash skills. When Riley first came into the rescue she was shut down and you could tell she had not had much exposure to the world outside her previous yard. She has come a LONG way since then, but is a dog who needs time to build trust...she will find a safe spot in the house, like a couch, bed, etc., and hang out there until she feels comfortable. It took her a few days to want to leave her safe space, but now she is fully engaged and likes to hang out with her foster family. She's still a little weary of visitors and may choose to remove herself, but her foster parents will block off the steps and keep her close, so she learns to engage. She does warm up to take treats and enjoys pets from visitors...she just needs a little encouragement.  We checked in with her foster mom, Christie, for an update: FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 8/9/24 “Riley is demonstrating such resilience now.  She is the sweetest dog we have ever fostered.  She makes no demands but is thrilled when her favorite things come her way (breakfast, dinner, walks, treats, and belly rubs).   Riley is the cutest little low-rider lab mix.   As a former Labrador Retriever family - I can attest to her Lab traits.  She wants to be with you, she is perceptive, she is SOOO food motivated, loves her routine and family life, has learned quickly and did I say food motivated? You will always find her in the kitchen when one of us is in there and she will remind you subtly that it is breakfast or dinner time.  Riley has slimmed and has the most spectacularly black shiny coat and cute little freckles/speckles of white on her face – reminds me of a constellation of stars.  She is always impeccably dressed in her natural tuxedo wear (when she is on her back to get her belly rubbed – she shows off her white and black markings which match formal wear.  Her ears are so expressive (which I love).   She doesn’t get into pack politics and minds her business with our two little 12 lb busy scruffy terriers.  She likes having them and will gladly follow them.  We have a very particular female scruffy- Stella - who does NOT care for dogs bigger than her, but Riley is the exception to this rule…She liked her right away.  Our other dog is a senior around 10-11 years old and Riley is VERY respectful of him, and they enjoy each other’s company.  All three get along great.  Riley has settled into suburban life.  We live in a neighborhood that is quiet but has the usual on-goings like kids playing, landscapers, house construction, and neighbors coming and going.  She quickly adjusted to a walk two times a day.  She doesn’t require long walks but would be willing to go as long as you want.  We kept her route consistent at first and then started to add on or switch it up once she was comfortable.  She has absolute joy on walks.  When she sees us getting out harnesses – she does cute little joyful doggie circus circles then calmly starts her famous wigglebutt excitement.  We have a few trusted dog friends in our neighborhood that we greet, and she does well.  She has never barked and the only time she is ever vocal is when she does a little low whine to let you know she is excited to see her friends.   She never overwhelms the dogs but enjoys sniffing and watching them while we catch up with their families.  Though her socialization is happening a bit later in her life – she does well when NEW folks come over.  She will take the safe route if allowed (and go quietly to the safe space of her crate, master bedroom, and our home office.  As part of our commitment to her growth – when we introduce her to friends and family, we block off access to her retreat areas and she approaches people on her terms once everyone settles and gets a lot of treats – which is very agreeable to her. Riley is not a fan of hanging out in the backyard – as she was settling into her new neighborhood fireworks caught all of us - especially her - off guard in the backyard (even though we were outside with her).  That created a bit of an association of the scary unfamiliar loud noise with her new backyard surroundings.  We have been working with her and a WDR trainer – and she has made great progress which we celebrate and reward, but she still only goes into the backyard for quick potty breaks. We still use a lead with her to redirect her reaction to fear.  It works.  I know that as she gets repeated exposure and learns the backyard is safe – this will improve.  But to be crystal clear – the front yard and walking in the neighborhood is Riley’s joy and to her, they are two totally separate worlds.    Riley needs a calm family.  She has had a few transitions in her life – and is demonstrating such resilience and acclimating well – she just needs a family who will love her and give her a little time to adjust and build trust.  A confident pup companion would be preferred.  She has looked up to our dogs to help her settle into suburbia. Overall, Riley is a JOY to be around.! She is 100% potty trained.  She would sleep on your bed if allowed or in her crate with the door open.  She has one toy she loves – it dispenses treats (dog kibs) when she rolls it or grabs it to take with her.   I find it in all of her favorite places.   She keeps us company and quietly lays in her bed in our home office as we work throughout the week, she snugs up on the couch and also loves to lay in the dog donut bed on the couch when we watch TV, and settles in on the bed to sleep at our feet.  She’s the sweetest soul you will ever meet and some lucky family who gives her a chance is going to be so lucky to have her in their life." ***** Apply today! Story
Meet Loki….Loki is fortunate to have made his way to rescue. His elderly owner was very ill and no longer able to care for him, so he gave him away for free on social media to a 17-year-old boy with good intentions who saw the post and responded. Without telling his mom, the boy met Loki’s owner at a gas station and took him home. He thought he was doing the right thing, but his parents were unaware and not on board with adding a new dog. Thankfully, this kind-hearted family stayed committed to helping Loki. They built a temporary pen with shelter for him and the son walked Loki three times a day and made sure he had plenty of playtime, while mom started reaching out to rescues. Our team wanted to support this family that was doing right by the dog. Loki has been in his foster home for almost two months learning the rules of home life. He’s been living with a foster mom and dad,  and 2 large GSDs. When Loki arrived at his foster home he had a lot of adolescent energy. He has been living outside and needed time to trust and transition. His foster mom, Lou, did a gradual introduction to her pack of one senior and one young dog. Loki is respectful of the senior and has found a playmate in the younger dog. He’s fully crate-trained and housetrained and has learned to settle down in the house. He now enjoys cuddling on the couch and has earned free roam privileges at night to stay out with the other dogs.   FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 6/10/24 We checked in with his foster mom, Lou,  for an update: "Loki is so cute you can't help but fall in love. He’s a young dog who does well with structure and routine. He’s learned how to sit on command, loves treats, and playing tug of war is his favorite thing. He's now completely housebroken and crate trained and we trust him to stay out loose at night with the other dogs. Loki is medium energy because while he enjoys playtime in the yard, he’s also learned to settle down and relax. He loves to cuddle on the couch and has proven to have good house manners. He’s close to 12 mos old and does not have the destructive tendencies of a puppy. He enjoys yard time and will play fetch but doesn’t bring the ball back to you. He and Knox will chase each other around the yard, but Knox wants to roughhouse play and Loki would rather play tug of war. He plays well by himself and he's fine running around in the yard by himself too.  My senior, Dozer, and Loki get along well and he respects Dozer's space. I do not think he would be good with cats because when he sees them out the front door he goes crazy and does have a prey drive. I think he’s done well and adapted quickly. He met my mom a few weeks ago when she came to visit and he did great with her. He's also met my grandkids. He really enjoyed the attention of the 8 and 12-year-olds, but got excited and wanted to play with the toddler. He redirects well but is probably best with kids out of the toddler stage 7+ years old. He also enjoys vet visits and meeting all the staff." ******** We are looking for a fun, active family to welcome him home. Loki will do fine as an only dog as long as he has an engaged owner to play with him. He would enjoy a dog buddy too. Story
Meet Stevie. This adorable Lab mix puppy was rescued from a neglectful home. She was being kept in a tiny crate under a deck behind her owner’s mobile home enduring the intense heat of the South Carolina summer. A neighbor became concerned for her welfare as she had no access to fresh water or regular meals and was very thin. Her owner would leave Stevie alone for days so the neighbor started feeding her and bringing fresh water, and while Animal Control was contacted multiple times, they never took action. Thankfully, Stevie was released to our rescue and is now enjoying the love and comfort of her foster home. Stevie is now in an active home with a foster mom and dad,  a teen son, multiple dogs, and a cat, and she does well with everyone. While she had an unfortunate early life experience, that has not impacted her social skills at all. She loves meeting new people and other dogs and is so trainable — she’s smart and food-motivated. She is crate-trained and housetrained and has been getting daily leash walking practice. As all young dogs do, she needs a family committed to daily exercise and playtime and would love a playful pup buddy in her new home. She has regular playdates with other dogs and is very respectful of boundaries and will adjust to the other dog’s energy and style. Overall, Stevie is a sweet, innocent puppy who is very snuggly. She likes to lay on her foster mom’s lap to cuddle and follows her everywhere. Her favorites include cheese, peanut butter, antlers, soft treats, and scrambled eggs. She already knows “sit” and aims to please her person — she’s a puppy who just needs time to learn the rules and what’s expected. She still has some puppy mouthiness but has mostly grown out of it. She needs regular, consistent potty breaks and you can’t fully trust her with free-roam privileges in the home just yet. We checked in with her foster mom, Jenn, for an update: “Stevie may have had a rough start in life, but you would never know it based on her loving, friendly, and goofy demeanor.  She is six to seven months old and is full of life.  She takes seconds to engage with both humans and dogs alike and everything about her says ‘I want to be your friend.’ She loves to cuddle and is so sweet. She is still a puppy so while she doesn’t always get into things she does need to be watched. She loves toys and has been known to interrupt an office meeting with squeaking of said toys….She is a good car rider and likes to go for walks, especially when she can sniff and explore.” This sweet pup was lucky to be rescued so young and has a long, happy life ahead of her. She’s a gem of a pup and we can’t wait to see her flourish in her new home.   Apply today!   BREED ESTIMATE: Lab Mix GENDER: Female APPROXIMATE WEIGHT:  40 lbs APPROXIMATE AGE: ~  6 months old (will be over 60 lbs fully grown) COAT TYPE: Shortish coat ADOPTION FEE: $425 OTHER INFO: utd on shots/spayed/microchipped LOCATION:  Charlotte, NC   FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to https://adopt.worthydog.org and complete the application. Story
"Yes, I am sitting on the coffee table. That's normal, right? I just wanted to get a closer view of what you were doing." I LOVE this boy's personality more and more and so will you!Merry Me is a BOY and he is going to be a BIG BOY. Think, current status, "Bull in a China Shop," as he has no clue where his tail is whipping around to and crashing into, there are no obstacles to get from pt A to pt B, and if you leave a room, don't worry he is right there with you. He's also very SMART! He is extremely food motivated so positive training will be excellent and probably not too hard with him (sorry, I only have so much time and minimal training taking place). He LOVES and responds well to praise. He would do well with LOTS of activity so hiking, long walks, runs, or even learning agility, would be great for him.At almost 7 months old, he is doing amazing! Although crate trained, he is not currently crated, just confined to my first floor, for my work day. No accidents.  He did have a recent slip-up with chewing, but that's my fault. My dogs are couch potatoes, so he needed some activities, i.e. frozen kongs, food puzzles, etc...to keep him busy during the day.  Occasional doggy daycare might do him well, too.  He LOVES other dogs and will play non-stop if he has his way!He definitely has some things to work on since he is nervous in new environments, situations, or with people, but he has come so far with working through it!  Last foster said he was great with her kids, but I would suggest kiddos who understand he may need space to adjust.  Oh yes, Darla (his foster dog sister) taught him to get up on the coffee table....again, he needs better training than me!  Are you ready to meet me? Story
They have named this little one, Concrete; perhaps it's because they saw how strong and resilient she is. This lil mama deserves one for surviving life in the approx 1 year she's been alive.... she has a heart-wrenching survival story but is now learning how to thrive. It's unanimous, she is just soooooooo sweet, quiet, SWEET lil (fully grown at 20 to 30 lbs) pup and loves to cuddle. She is really going to be the BEST dog when she learns that she is safe and she really can trust humans again. Currently, she is a little shy and timid, a little anxious on car rides or outside in the yard or on a leash, easily startled at loud noises, and currently heartworm-positive, but she is also learning how to relax, coexisting with an energetic resident dog twice her size,  braving the outdoors, already spayed, house trained, crate-trained, knows how to sit, and did i mention how sweet and quiet she is?? This girl here is a SURVIVOR, is so trainable, and so deserving of finding her fureverrrrr family that will continue to shower her in love, patience, and comfort so that she can now enjoy life to the fullest!! She is currently on a treatment for the heartworms which will continue for several months courtesy of WTAR. She is also momma to 4 pups that were also rescued by the WTAR community,  and so you can have lots of fun reunions for years to come!!! Are you interested in meeting this little lady.  Visit https://www.wtarescue.com/adoption-process-2 to request a meet and greet and to learn more about the adoption process! Story
Meet Chicken Wire! My Foster Mom calls me "Chick" or "Chicken Little".  I'm the sweetest girl you'll ever meet. One of my other foster family members referred to me as a "Diva" and that's kind of true.  I like my privacy and have the prettiest eyes.  I have had no potty accidents in the last week and I sleep through the night. I like to take everything in and watch the world around me to determine it's a safe space and want to speak to everyone when comfortable. So, I am a little slow to warm up, but when I do I’m a sweet, loving, independent girl that will follow you everywhere. I met a child in my foster family’s neighborhood that is petrified of dogs.  I understood what he was going through and appreciated his slow approach. We became friends and he said that I'm the best dog that he's ever seen. I am food motivated, comfortable in a crate (but I have been sleeping in bed with my Foster Mom and brother (WTAR DocATot)), and absolutely love other dogs. I'm just waiting for someone to prove they'll love and care for me no matter what life brings. Please come meet me! <3 Are you ready to meet me?
