Story
Hi, I am Shinzo: an 9.5 yr old, 70 lb male McNab mix. The first word that comes to mind when you see me is regal, being poised in my stature, walk and behavior, but you might catch me playfully hopping with my dog buddies. When we first meet I need a moment to stand back to check you out just to determine if you're friend or foe, but don't worry...I'm a love bug after I've made my decision and see that you are worthy. I get along great with the dogs in my foster house, and I am great with kids. (Sorry, I don't like cats though.) I prefer not to bark (even when others are) as I am too well-mannered, but I have a wonderful deep bark if needed. I already know how to use a doggy door and am completely trained to do my business outside. Unlike some of my herding friends, I'm not hyperactive. I do need room and time to exercise (wait till you see how good I am on a leash!) but I also enjoy a nice nap at your side. I might nudge you with my nose if I feel you're ignoring me, but you'll think it's super cute. Don't fret, this regal boy doesn't require a throne...just a home and family where I can show you what a perfect dog I am to love and to love you.Dogs are not placed on a first-come, first-serve basis. We strive to find the perfect home for each animal. Applications may take up to 48 hours to process. All CAWS animals are fixed, microchipped, and vaccinated. His adoption fee is $100. Story
Frankie is a 10 month old dog, and is a shepherd and cattle dog mix of some sort. Frankie came to us as a medical rescue off a reservation, with horrible lacerations on one leg. He has now healed up beautifully and is hoping to find his forever home! Since he was a feral dog, he is very timid and lots of things scare him easily. While he is comfortable and does extremely well in his foster home, he will need a family that can be patient helping him learn basic commands, how to walk on a leash, and how to ride in a car. Frankie is one of the sweetest dogs, and loves to cuddle and follow his people around his house. He loves to play with toys, chew on bones, and lounge in a soft doggy bed or on the couch. He does happy dances at meal times, and loves butt scratches. He is house and crate trained. Frankie will ABSOLUTELY need to have a fenced in yard and another dog in the home that he can play with that will help him gain confidence in his new home. Frankie's adoption fee is $200 and he is fully vetted- fixed, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed and health checked. To be considered, please apply online at caws.org. Thanks! Story
Meet Oso, a 2-year-old mix with a complex genetic heritage including (per Embark DNA test) Australian Cattle, German Shepherd, Border Collie, American Pit Bull Terrier, Chow Chow, McNab, and Australian Shepherd. He's a charmer with an adorable underbite and a heart of gold. Oso gets along well with other dogs once introduced properly and is a cuddle enthusiast. Oso does carry emotional scars from his past, particularly regarding his interactions with men. Initial introductions require patience and gentleness to help him overcome his fear and build trust. Furthermore, Oso exhibits guarding tendencies around toys and treats. He has never bitten but he vocalizes his discomfort through barks and lunges. With consistent training and positive reinforcement, Oso is learning to share and coexist peacefully with his furry companions. His unique blend of breeds contributes to his intelligence and adaptability, making him a versatile & engaging companion.Dogs are not placed on a first-come, first-served basis. Story
With floppy ears, Luke, age 5, is an adult cattle dog mix with perpetual puppy cuteness and sweetness. Weighing in at 35 pounds, he likes to spend his days cuddled up in a comfy spot staring out the window and is always up for an outdoor adventure. Truly the best of both worlds! Luke has impeccable indoor manners (crate and house trained) and would spend all day curled up by your side if able (it cannot be stressed enough how much he adores people). He is a very smart and treat motivated pup. Luke is working on his leash skills and not getting overly excited around other dogs and with a proper and slow introduction he does well, but truly thrives in home as the only dog. He would love for his forever family to continue his training to support him in being the best pup he can be. Could that be you? Dogs are not placed on a first- come, first-served basis. Story
Royal is the sweetest girl around, and she is ready to find her forever home! She is a 6 month old heeler/cattle dog mix, and is expected to stay small, likely under 30#. Royal LOVES to play with her dog friends, and they love to chase, wrestle, and play tug together. She loves soft dog beds, squeaky toys, and bones. Royal would be happiest in an active home where she can get out and meet other people and pets, and explore the world beyond her backyard. She is very social and outgoing and would love a dog friend in her home or to socialize with other dogs on the regular. Royal is house trained, crate trained, and is learning to sit. She loves to follow her people around, and is an amazing cuddler! She came to us with severe skin injuries on her head and leg, as well as a fractured paw- which are all healing nicely and do not require any further medical care. We believe these injuries were likely a result of a loosing tango with a vehicle. She will likely have scars for life, but it you don't tell her it's an issue she will never know!Royal also has a heart murmur that currently doesn't require any special care, however she may require affordable medications later in life. Potential adopters will need to have regular annual check ups planned with a veterinarian to monitor this condition. She is expected to live a long, happy, and healthy life despite this rough start- are you ready to make your life complete by adding Royal to it?! Her adoption fee is $200. She is fixed, vaccinated, dewormed, health checked and microchipped. To be considered, please apply online at caws.org. Thanks! Story
Chopper is a 2-ish year old blue heeler mix. Chopper was a community dog on the reservation, and was rescued after he had an encounter with a porcupine and needed medical attention. He has had quills removed twice, and deeply embedded quills are expected to continue to surface for several more months. Chopper is a sweet energetic boy that loves attention and cuddles. He thinks everyone is his best friend, and he has enthusiastic body wiggles when he wags his tail. He is crate trained and house trained. Chopper does sometimes pee when approached, but has been making great progress when approached gently. He loves to play and wrestle with his dog friends, and also loves a good cuddle on the couch. He loves to jump around and try to do aerial acrobatics when his meals are being brought to him. As Chopper is still new to being a pet, he will need an adopter that will be patient while working on general skills, such as basic obedience, learning to walk on a leash, and how to ride in a car. Chopper is a wonderful dog with a huge personality, and with the right training will be an amazing companion.Dogs are not placed on a first-come, first-served basis. Story
Meet Josie!  Josie recently traveled all the way from New Mexico to find her forever family. Josie is estimated to be 10-12 weeks old and currently weighs 9 pounds. We think that she will be a medium sized adult dog between 30-45 pounds.  Josie is a mellow, yet courageous and brave girl who loves to be by your side. With a heart that's as big as her spirit, she'll never be too far away from the action or from your loving pats. So far she seems to love the company of other dogs as well. With her smart and quick-learning attitude, she's already mastering commands like 'sit' and 'shake', and she’s well on her way to learning 'down'! She's very comfortable sleeping at night in her crate and is picking up potty training very quickly!   If you're looking for a companion who's got an endless supply of love and adventure, then Josie is the perfect match. This little social butterfly is ready to spread her wings and find a home where she can continue her adventures. Could that be with you? Adopt Josie and let her light up your life with her courage and charm! For more information about Josie or the adoption process, please don't hesitate to reach out. Story
This stunning guy is Misio, pronounced 'Misho' which is Polish for Teddy Bear. Misio is a 7.5 year old Australian Shepherd who is currently on a diet to get to his ideal weight of about 37 pounds. Misio is looking for a patient and mature household to live the rest of his years. He is working through some trust issues and is learning to let his guard down. But once he knows you are safe, he will be yours forever. Misio likes to be near people but isnt overly cuddly, he is content to be in his own space near you. He'd do best in a home with adults only and no other animals. Misio is still very active and he would love to be your hiking, camping, or running companion! He is very outgoing and loves to chase a ball around the yard. He is also very smart and picks up on training quickly. Misio needs a forever home that can provide him with mental stimulation and a physical outlet. He can be chill in the house, but is also not a couch potato. He is house trained and crate trained and walks well on leash. With a little bit of training, a dash of patience, and a person who will be active with him, Misio will be an amazing companion for years to come! Dogs are not placed on a first- come, first-served basis. We strive to find the perfect home for each animal. Applications may take up to 48 hours to process. Story
Kayli came to her foster mom sick and at a very unhealthy weight. After a lengthy nutrition and weight loss program this adorable girl is ready to find her forever home! She was at a point where she could barely walk and now she loves a nice race around the backyard or to fetch her toys for you. She is a supreme cuddle bug and can't get close enough to her people. Tummy rubs might be her favorite thing and if you pet her she will adorably fling herself to the ground to better accommodate you. She loves walks but is also content to just stay home with you, too. She does have a problem with excited barking but she calms down after a short time. She just loves every single person she meets and can't control her excitement at first. She also loves children and children love her but because of her initial excited barking she can sometimes scare them so an initial leash greeting would be best with small children. She loves other dogs but if they get in her face too much she can sometimes be a little snippy. She has done well in her foster home with another older dog and, for a short stint, she had a blast with a big, goofy young boy that was recently adopted. Kayli has a 'cherry eye' (where the tear duct has popped out under the eyelid) that her owner chose not to fix as it doesn't bother her at all, but because of that it has been too long to do anything about it. It doesn't bother her and requires no attention. Would like to meet this cute girl?Dogs are not placed on a first-come, first-served basis. We strive to find the perfect home for each animal. Story
Riley Ray is a 8 year 60 pound Australian Shepherd eloquent and majestic gal, tri colored. She is totally house trained, gets along with all the other dogs in her foster home, male and female, big and small. Riley Ray came to be a CAWS dog as an owner surrender from a very high kill shelter in NM. We don’t know the circumstances after eight years she had to be surrendered but we are utterly the most fortunate rescue to be able to find this magnificent lady a new forever home and life. She is perfect, still has energy and helps her foster mom and the other furkids work during the day, she is such a talent in the work force, whew. She gets in a crate when it is time to eat and then out when she is done to go out and do her business. She has not had a single accident in her foster home, wonderful wonderful girl Riley has no known medical concerns or issue, woo hoo. Riley lounges on the carpet til she gets let out in the back yard. Her foster mom tried to get her to come on the couch with everyone else but so far she hasn’t, she may feel more comfortable and join everyone later on. She rides wonderfully in the car, sits in the backseat. This magnificent lady just needs to find the home she can call her own, which she is so deserving of. She will need occasional brushings or a spa day to stay beautiful.
