Story
Meet Winston This handsome boy is named Winston. He is an amazing dog. He was surrendered to us over a year ago because his owner works really long hours and Winston was crated for far too many hours a day. Somehow, Winston has been overlooked time and again. Winston is a three and a half year old Australian Kelpie/Lab mix. He’s missed out on a lot of loving and living in his life. Going from a full-time crate to a shelter, Winston’s just gone through the motions of living. He loves being with people when they give him time. He is friendly and affectionate. He really has a way of connecting. He loves playing fetch and will play all day if someone goes in the yard with him. If not, he gets dejected and only wants to go back to his kennel. He’s never learned to ‘dog’; to be carefree, to lay in the sun or to chew a bone. A person or family who’d give him 1:1 time will help him thrive. He has all the makings of fabulous companion, if only someone cared enough to give him a chance. Winston seems to not like other dogs, but he may just not know their social cues, having grown up in crate isolation. Winston is house-trained and crate trained. He has wonderful manners, he walks well on a leash. He is athletic and smart. He’s a good size too, not too big. He loves to travel. This handsome boy so deserves a second chance. He would love for someone to love him, play ball with him, take him on walks and hikes, and play fetch. Winston needs a chance to ‘dog’, to chew a bone, lay on the couch, be cherished and loved. Day after day, Winston waits to go home. Maybe you’ll be the one to give Winston that chance. He’s so worth it. If interested in Winston, please submit an application online at: https://www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org or email us for an application. Story
Meet Faith Faith is a gorgeous shepherd/kelpie dog mix. She was found living in a hoarder’s house. She was desperately trying to raise her puppies surrounded by filth, with no food and kindness. She was surrendered to us with six puppies in tow. She was a good mom, raising her pups beautifully and lovingly. Faith’s puppies have found their furever homes. Now it’s Faith’s turn to get her second chance. Faith is about three years old. She has a pretty, light red coat and warm amber eyes. She is medium in size. Our staff and volunteers have done an incredible job with Faith, showing her unending love and attention. She was so scared when she arrived and to see her now, embracing our staff and volunteers in gentle hugs, we know that she is ready to lavish her love on a kind and caring person/family. Faith is friendly, affectionate, outgoing, calm, gentle and quiet. She has grown in confidence. She is learning some tricks. She walks easily on a leash. She has shown us her playful side. She loves being in the fresh air and play yards. She is loving and affectionate with those she trusts. Faith enjoys traveling in a car, especially to her favorite lunch place. She loves attention and thrives under the adoring kindness shown to her. Faith is a smart girl and learns quickly. We think she is most likely house-trained. She will do well with positive reinforcement. Faith will need a containment fenced yard to safely run around and enjoy the fresh air. But she must live as an indoor dog. Faith is selective about other dogs, but this may be the isolation and desperation she experienced early on. Once a shelter dog is given time to decompress and live a more normal and quiet life, this may change. Faith is a beautiful and lovely dog who just needs a second chance. If interested in Faith, please submit an application online at: https://www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org or email us for an application. Story
Meet River This handsome boy is River. River came to us from a hoarding situation nearly a year ago. Found living in filth as a young pup, River, his mama Faith, and six puppies were rescued and surrendered to our shelter. Fantastic Faith is still looking for a home and River is now ready to find his furever loving home too. River was petrified when he first arrived. He’d run from his own shadow. Should anyone even look at him, he’d cower and run away. BUT, thanks to our staff and volunteers, River has developed a lot more confidence and is ready to experience a loving home. River is a gorgeous Austrailian Kelpie/ red German Shepherd mix. He’s just over two years old. He is super sweet. He LOVES people he trusts. He has the gentlest of personalities. He tries so hard to be brave. For the person or family who is patient with him and helps him transition, they are going to be rewarded with a companion for life. River loves with his whole heart. River will absolutely need a containment fence. He is scared of so many things; running is his first reaction. River likes other dogs. He loves his mama, Faith. If they could be adopted together, that would be the biggest blessing, but he can stand on his own too. Another dog to show him the ropes and give him comfort would be a benefit to him. River loves to play. River would do best in a quiet home, with experienced dog owners. Only gentle guidance for this boy. Anything more and he’ll shut down or run away. River is in no way aggressive, it’s just that life must be taken slower to let him catch up with his new world. For the person who adopts River, showing River all the good things that life can offer, like love, kindness, comfy beds, toys, soft voices, treats, peace and quiet, will be a wonderful bonding and richly rewarding experience. This boy has a piece of our hearts at the shelter. To see where he came from, to the incredible young dog he is today, fills us with joy. There will be no words good enough to see this boy land softly in his forever family. Story
Interview with Dash:Interviewer: How did you arrive to the Animal Shelter? Dash: Well, I was walking down the street looking for leftover Thanksgiving scraps when I noticed that someone pulled their vehicle over to the side of the road. I assumed they had some scraps for me, so I walked up to them and jumped into their vehicle and guess what, no scraps, how rude!!!! The man who picked me up told me that he didn't want me to get hurt and took me to the Animal Shelter. Interviewer: Did you like being at the Animal Shelter? Dash: At first no, because there were a lot of rowdy dogs in the area I was staying at. It scared me a bit and I just stayed to myself, but then one day I went out for a walk and they put me in the Administrative Supervisors office, which was awesome. I went from a small apartment to a condo! A big upgrade. Interviewer: What has changed since you arrived at the Animal Shelter?Dash: A lot has changed! When I arrived at the Shelter, I was heartworm positive. I went into a foster home while going through my treatment. Thankfully, my treatment has been completed and starting March 15th, I can return to my normal activities, like playing fetch with a tennis ball and going for long walks! I cannot wait, I'm so excited for this day to arrive. Also, my foster parent wanted to adopt me, which I was super excited about because she has been one of the best foster parents that any dog could ask for, but unfortunately with inflation and being on a limited income, she cannot adopt me. But that's okay because my forever family is out there, I just know it.Interviewer: What do you look for in a family?Dash: Okay, I am going to be a little picky here. I am a woman's man, but if the woman I adore has a man in her home, I'll be okay with that ONLY under these circumstances: 1) Men like to wear these weird things on their heads that scare me sometimes. My foster parent told me those are called "hats". Not sure what they do, but they sure do scare me and prefer they not be worn when I'm around. 2)No loud power tools in my presence. Those things scare me too.Other than those 2 circumstances, I should be perfectly fine with a male in the home. What will not work for me is children. They scare me as well. Anytime I get scared, I tend to nip at their shoes. I guess it's the Heeler in me that makes me do that. I am not a fan of cats and I have never met a dog before, so I'm not sure how I'd do with them.Interviewer: Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?Dash: I love belly rubs, cuddling, sleeping on the couch and sleeping in my foster parents' bed. I'm usually a couch potato, but sometimes I like to run around a bit. I am housetrained, but there are 2 things to know about that. 1) I can usually hold my "business" for some time, but if you are not around and I really have to use the bathroom, I try to become the Kool-Aid man and bust through the wall to get outside to use the bathroom. Trust me I know it sounds bad, but I do not want to make a mess in the home. 2) When you take me out to use the bathroom, it may take me a bit to find the right place, but once I find that place, that will become my forever bathroom.Interviewer: I know you are currently in a foster home. How can adopters meet you?Dash: They can contact the Animal Shelter at 678-965-7185 or email Adoptions@forsythco.com to set up an appointment to meet me.
