My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Bupkis! He's got puppy energy so he's a fun time to hangout with and train. He's a good listener who loves to learn and has shown he has a calmer affectionate side along with his silly playful side! He's had a good dog meet in the shelter and has been so sweet to everyone he's met. He would do best in a home where any children are over the age of 10 since he can be a little nervous and has puppy behaviors like mouthing. If you have any dogs or children at home, please bring them along for a meet! Bupkis has great notes from his finder and his short term foster. Read more about him below! Bupkis is available for adoption, foster, or rescue placement!

BEHAVIOR:
Per finder 12/29: Finder called in to share some notes about her time with Bupkis. "He is very smart but definitely acts like a puppy. I saw him running down the street and he was nervous when I first went over to him but I got him in my car and he just seemed to know he was safe. He laid in my lap the whole way home. He became comfortable and was wagging his tail, jumping around. He is so happy and friendly and did well meeting strangers, but I would recommend he goes to a home with older children that understand his puppy behavior and could assist with training. He may be too much energy for toddlers. He walks so well on leash and knows some commands. He loves playing, especially fetch, but once he tires down he would lay right next to me and is just so sweet. He was even calm while I was sweeping up a broken Christmas tree ornament. He is a really great dog. He would make any family so happy."

Per volunteer 12/28: Bupkis and I enjoyed a quick visit outside (it was raining so we could not stay out long). He was so excited to get out and enjoyed the fresh air. He was easy to leash and take out. He loves hugs, sitting next to his people, and is just an overall great dog. There was a lot of mud in the play yard and he was an expert at avoiding it. He seems excited to meet all people and dogs. Bupkis is a handsome, energetic boy who would love to meet you today.

Per short term foster 12/27:
“Bupkis is a sweet and silly guy! He is still a puppy, so can be jumpy and mouthy. But he has plenty of calm moments too and showed he's a good listener and willing to learn. With some basic training and maturity, he will be a playful but overall chill guy. He is super affectionate and loves neck/chin scratches.
Food & Play:
Bupkis is very enthusiastic about food and treats. He can be a little snatchy, but we practiced sit and he started to get it. He also enjoyed chomping on a bully stick and playing with a stuffie. He went after my shoe a few times for a toy, but I told him no and was able to take it away from him without a problem. In the play yard, he enjoyed playing fetch. He dropped the ball as soon as he brought it back to me.
Housetraining:
Bupkis did a great job with house training. He did not have any accidents in the crate or in the house. He did not mark and held his bladder even when he was excited.
Walks & Being Outside:
The best thing about Bupkis is that he walks like a dream! He was calmest when we were outside on walks. I let him set the pace and he thoroughly enjoyed sniffing around. He did great walking with a loose leash. The few times he started to pull, I stopped and called him back to me. Then we continued on without any pulling. He was non-reactive to cars, people, and other dogs while on our walk. For the most part, we didn’t get closer than 15-20 feet, and he either completely ignored them or stopped and stared, but showed no signs of distress. He was also very sweet on the walks and sometimes stopped just so he could get some pets and back scratches.
Being Inside & In the Crate:
Bupkis struggled more when we were inside. Because he escaped the play pen so easily, I kept him in the crate in order to separate him from my resident dog. He cried and barked for the first 10-15 mins each time I put him in the crate, but then he settled down (with the help of some classical music and a white noise machine). When I had him out of the crate, he enjoyed playing with a squeaky toy and standing on my lap. He definitely wants to be with his humans! I had my resident dog in the bedroom, but he was barking and whining. Bupkis did show some overarousal and mouthiness at the noise, so ultimately I put him back in his crate so he could calm down. I think he would have done better inside if I wasn’t trying to balance the 2 dogs by myself and keep them separate.
The Great Houndini:
He’s a bit of an escape artist - he somehow managed to unzip the canvas and mesh crate he was traveling in for the car ride. A quick stop and switch to the wire crate and that held him! He also demonstrated the ability to jump over the 30” high doggie playpen I set up for him. I think he’d LOVE a forever home that let him explore agility or American ninja dog warrior - is that a thing?
Future Family:
Overall, Bupkis is an awesome dog! He definitely showed interest in my dog through the crate/playpen wires. And he does have a silly playful side. So I think he would likely do well with a doggie friend in the house, after decompression and slow introductions. I also think he'd be happy as an only dog as long as he gets many opportunities to play and snuggle with his humans. He did greet one of my male neighbors on our walk and was very excited to receive pets. He even started doing some zoomies! I imagine he’d be fine living with men or women or both. Bumpkis does have some jumpiness and mouthiness, which could be due to his young age and the stress of staying in a new place. I think with some training and as he ages, that will be less of an issue. But older children may be best in the meantime.”

Per volunteer 12/23: Really sweet, loving, liked to be petted, does not like going back.

12/22 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:
KNOWN HISTORY:
Stray
KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Bupkis was lying on his bed when I approached his kennel. He slowly stood up and came to the front with wide soft eyes and some slow low wags. Allowed for easy leashing and exited easily.
Would not return to kennel and pancaked but allowed me to carry him in!
LEASH SKILLS:
Pulls minimally
HANDLING:
Bupkis was timid, but sweet in the room. He gave low wags and had soft eyes when interacting with him and would come up to me often to solicit. He would flinch away with sudden movements, but as time went on he got more comfortable and less nervous. He allowed all over handling without any issues and was very gentle in the room. No interest in treats at this time.
PLAY:
No interest
TOYS:
Interest but no possession. Toys helped him to warm up a lot!

Per staff 12/22: Met thru kennel bars. Poor baby seems scared to be here. Walked over slowly to greet me. I offered treats and he took them so nicely. Seems like a very sweet boy.
