Story
Hi! My name is Peanut and I am a 9 year old, 17 lb Miniature Schnauzer. I might be a little guy but boy do I have a big personality! You will see this come out when someone comes to the door to visit! I came into rescue with my older brother Max after we lost our Dad and our Mom realized she couldn't care for us anymore. Since then, Max has crossed the rainbow bridge. Although I was the enthusiastic one of us two, Max was definitely the wiser one. I looked up to him with admiration because he wasn't just my brother; he was my rock. Together, we faced many great days and also many challenges, including diabetes. Our journey wasn't always easy, but through it all, Max and I remained by each other's side, stronger and better because we were together. I am learning how to live life without him and although he is missed, I am doing just fine finding my way. Despite facing the challenge of diabetes, I'm not letting anything hold me back. My eyes, warm and wise, have seen many things, yet they still sparkle with hope. Managing my diabetes is part of my routine, but it doesn't define me. It's simply part of who I am. Now, I'm searching for a forever family who understands that managing my health isn't hard, it just takes some education is all. To the family who welcomes me into their home, you'll receive all the love that knows no bounds. In return, I'll offer you lifelong loyalty, endless cuddles, and an abundance of cherished memories. Peanut is up to date on vaccinations, 4DX tested, microchipped and neutered. We are in the process of applying for a grant that will provide Peanut's family with funding to offset some of the costs associated with their care. In addition, we are working with a pet diabetic company that has agreed to send their family a basket filled with all the supplies they will need to get started, free of charge. Peanut would do best in a home with a physically fenced in yard so he can safely explore as much as his little heart desires. Adopters must be within a 45 minute radius of Cedar Rapids, IA. Indoor homes only. Applications can be submitted at: https://www.aplanimalrescue.org/dogs

Story
Hi my name is Lulu! I am what people believe to be an Australian Kelpie/Shepherd Mix and was born sometime around October, 2023. I am a petite girl, weighing in at just over 30 lbs. I was found roaming around town, an itty bitty girl, hungry and scared of everything around me, dreaming and praying I would be taken in and cared for the way I deserved to be. My dreams came true one day when a really nice family found me and couldn't bear to let me stay out in the cold rain. Now, I'm embarking on a new chapter - learning the ropes of family life in a home bustling with children and another furry friend. At first, I wasn't sure about toys or beds or anything comfortable since I had never had these amenities before. Because I was always scavenging for food, and although I now never miss a nutritious meal, I can sometimes get nervous that this resource will not last. I do let my foster siblings share my water bowl with me now and I've gained some healthy weight since I've been with my foster family. Now that I've been able to learn from my humans, I LOVE toys!! They're so fun to play with and run after! Balls are my absolute favorite! I have even learned to like my doggie bed, especially when my foster humans lay with me. I do still prefer no blankets in my crate when I am left alone or checking in for the night but have recently been sleeping in my foster parent's bed and I sleep like a dream! My foster Mom says I'm a beautiful, sweet and spunky girl. She loves my playful bouncy energy and that I like to cuddle up for belly rubs when I'm tired. Because I love to run and play so much, I would love an active family, with children 10 or older, that will take me on adventures and a fenced in yard of my own so I can zoom around safely! I can't wait to find my forever family! I would do great in a home with another playful, medium to large dog, to show me the ropes and even older human siblings old enough to throw my toys for me! Lulu is potty trained, up to date on vaccinations, has been dewormed, microchipped and spayed. She is participating in basic obedience training with our trainer so her adopters will be required to continue this training until completed, paid for by APL. Lulu will do best in a home with a physically fenced yard so he can run and play safely. Applications can be submitted at: https://www.aplanimalrescue.org/dogs

Story
Hi! My name is Tango! I am a handsome 6-year-old male Goldendoodle. Yes, Goldendoodle! I weigh just over 50 lbs and every ounce of me is adorable. I joined the APL family after living with a loving family my entire life. I had a human Mom and Dad and 3 little human sisters. In late September 2023, I suffered a spinal cord stroke and lost the ability to use my back legs as a result. I did a lot of physical therapy to help me regain function. My family tried their best to help me as long as they could but made the selfless decision to surrender me to A Purposeful Life in April 2024, so I could continue the road to my best mobility and to start a new chapter in my life. I love my new foster family and all my friends at APL. My favorite things to do are to play ball in the backyard, to snack on yummy treats, and to soak up and give lots of love and cuddles to anyone within a mile of me. I have no toy or food aggression and take treats oh so gently. I am extremely happy and sweet and am confident and curious about everything in my environment. I have loved every person I've ever met and will ask for pets all day long. Prior to my spinal cord stroke, I loved to go for long walks and runs. The wonderful people at APL knew this so they had a set of custom wheels made just for me! Now I'm back at it, leaving my people in the dust! I am an amazing traveler and love to go places. Adventures are my jam! I rarely bark and I don't chew on things I am not supposed to. I'm great with children of all ages, as long as they are respectful of me. I get along well with other animals and I don't mind having my paws touched at all. I love to chew on rubber balls and any toy with a squeaker in it, those are the best! Since joining the APL family, I have been spending considerable time at the awesome Iowa State Veterinary Rehabilitation Clinic to strengthen my back legs with exercises, massage, underwater treadmill, pool time, acupuncture and walking the halls with my cart. I am a staff favorite and they all have fallen in love with me. I mean....who wouldn't? I'm literally the BEST dog! I do require that you help me by expressing my bladder a few times a day. You will be given lots of help by my APL team to learn how to do this...it's really pretty easy and there are lots of online videos to help as well. The secret of a special needs dog is that they bring to their people a unique feeling of limitless purpose, joyous possibility, and unmatched happiness in accomplishment! A hero is someone who adopts a special needs dog, makes accommodations to care for their unique needs, and helps that dog to live a full and happy life. I'm looking for a family that sees beyond my different abilities and appreciates my incredible spirit. A household that's patient, loving, and ready to welcome me, despite my need for a bit more care. I promise to reward you with boundless love and joy and be your best companion by stealing your heart from the moment you meet me. Tango is up to date on vaccinations, 4DX tested, microchipped and neutered. He will come with all his cool gadgets so you can easily take him along on adventures. Applications to meet Tango can be submitted at: https://www.aplanimalrescue.org/dogs

Story
NOW PART OF THE LONEY HEARTS CLUB!!!Leo is looking for a home! This guy is definition toy-hound. He loves to romp about and play in the yard CVHS has to offer adoptable dogs, but we think he would prefer to have a home of his own to bound about in! This guy came to our shelter as a stray - but we have learned a variety of things about him thus far! He has a gooooofy boy who is big on communication! While zooming about or playing fetch, he is quite vocal. Getting him amped up and jumping about sure is his favorite! But he also understands how to settle down (as seen by office staff when he's been given a kennel break to hang out with his human friends). He walks well on leash and listens nicely to humans. Come meet this good boy today!

Story
This sweet girl is ready and looking to fall in LOVE with a forever home! Currently residing in our Operations Director's office, she is a well behaved girly. She enjoys playing with toys - especially those of the squeak variety! She will play about in the yard, but is also content on nap time throughout the day. Lucia keeps her area nice and clean and listens nicely. While we have attempted visits with other dogs, Lucia let us know that she can be possessive of her toys/belongings, so we are looking for a home without other animals for her to ensure a stress-free environment.Stop on out and meet Lucia and ALLLLLL of our other cute tenants, we have plenty of new best furry friends waiting for their forever homes
