Story
He is our longest resident and has been living in The Athens County Dog Shelter since July of 2024. Brutus is a 2 year old retriever mix who came to the shelter completely unsocialized. His two sisters were thankfully adopted and rescued and have shown huge improvements in a home setting. Brutus needs that chance too. He is a staff and volunteer favorite and has made huge strides in the shelter. With the help of BARC - Behavior Analysis Reform for Companions, he had his first bath. He has even learned to tolerate some light touch although he often still flinches if you try and pet him. Brutus has never shown any aggression and you can tell he wants to connect with people, despite his fear. Sometimes when you're walking him, he will brush up against you which is his attempt to connect in a way that feels safe. Most important, Brutus loves other dogs. They bring him comfort and help him understand that being a dog can be fun. Brutus has learned how to play chase and give great play bows 🙂 And of course his girlfriend Casey taught him about the pleasures of string cheese. Brutus does not get enough human interaction at the shelter to continue improving. There simply are not enough staff and volunteers to spend the needed one-on-one time with him. He needs a patient adopter or rescue that will help him reach his potential. Please help us get this boy the life he deserves.

Story
Calling all beagle lovers! Sweet Ruby was dressed to impress this week at the Athens Veterinary Clinic. Does she look good in pink or what? Ruby is a 13 year old beagle who spent most of her years as a hunting dog. She lost an eye in an accident 4 years ago but gets around just fine. She is currently in a temporary foster home while she waits for her permanent retirement home. She enjoys the company of other dogs and savors walks outside to track scents like she did in her youth. Can you add this low-key senior to your family? Call The Athens County Dog Shelter at 740-593-5415 to meet her.

Story
Sissy Elizabeth was brought into the shelter from College Street, Nelsonville. It appears that her owner passed away this past spring and she was given to another person to take care of her. We have been trying to contact Linda Taylor, with no success so far, to ask questions about Sissy that will help us help her get adopted or rescued. Sissy is 10 years old (according to her license information) and obviously obese. She currently weighs around 111 pounds. We would like to see her lose about 50 pounds. She has labored breathing as it is. UPDATE: As of 11/27/24 Sissy weighs in at 87.6 pounds. She has lost 23.4 pounds! FOSTER MOM UPDATE: She is losing weight! Shes a busy gal! ???? She’s pretty much the perfect dog. Looks like she’s smiling most of the time. Loves the pool and car rides. Is more active and really enjoys walks and being outside… a lot of people may see her size and think she’s just a couch potato, but she’ll stay outside all day if you’ll let her. House trained. Gets along get with all the dogs. (slight food aggression with them if you bring out treats now that she believes she’s being starved ? but perfect all the rest of the time)
