He found his way into a TX shelter as a stray dog and when no owner came forward to claim him, he was transferred to GPMR for rehab. This boy was absolutely emaciated when he arrived at the shelter. He was only 88 lbs when he arrived and he's already up to about 125! When Gus came to us, he had caught an URI but that's cleared up. He is good with the other dogs in his foster home. We know he'll grab a chicken if given the chance but did drop when told to :) However with that, it would probably be best for him to live in a home without cats.Due to Gus poor health when he came into Rescue, it will be a while before he's ready for adoption. He did test positive for heartworms and we've started him on treatment. He's also showing some signs of allergies that we are working on getting treated and determining if it seems to be a food allergy vs an environmental allergy. Check back for more updates! This sweet boy found himself in a shelter near Houston TX. When no owner was located or came forward, he was transferred to GPMR. Luke is living the best life in his new foster home! His foster mom says sometimes he is so cute that it makes her eyes water. But his salty face and droopy jowls really do work in his favor. He might look old, but  he's estimated at 4-5 yrs old. He appears to have lived a hard life previously and his body shows it. So, please know that he's in his absolute prime despite the greys! He doesn't dig or destroy anything. He is fed separately but that’s because our homes takes the safest measures when they are not the only furry one around here. When his foster mom has taken food, or my bones just to safely “test” – it didn’t phase him one bit. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body. Luke is wonderfully housetrained! He enjoys canine companions, but doesn't quite play, although watching others play make him happy. He wiggles his booty and wags his tail just being happy that my furry friends are happy. He really thinks he wants to play, but still needs to gain some pounds and TLC with my body. My foster mom has been doing her best with helping get all the foods and supplements. So maybe in the future, he may be ready to do some zooms. He's getting used to his foster cat sibling, at first he would get excited when he saw her, but now he just lays down after he says hello! Luke know sit and shake like the best boy! He is a quiet boy, but in typical Mastiff fashion, sometimes he likes to alert the family of something he sees or hears, but that’s it.Prepare yourself with the cuteness. Luke always has a stuffy toy in his mouth when someone greets him OR if he is just so happy. He will go grab one – sometimes even two! – to parade around with because he is just SO happy to be loved. He even brings them to his vet visits. One little thing to keep in mind, like most of the dogs that are found as a stray down south, he is heartworm positive (HW+). We have already started treatment, but the Vet said he's got some changes in his lungs from the heartworm disease process and it's possible he could have a permanent condition similiar to asthma or COPD in people. We'll have his chest Xrays re-evaluated once he finishes his treatment. Unfortunately Luke was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. He does show some occasional pain in his back end, we have him on supplements and also an Rx anti-inflammatory medication as well. We will get a consult with a specialist once his heartworm treatment is completed to see if there are any treatment options that might help his condition. He will need a home that is single story as going up and down stairs would not be good for his hips. He also needs a home with respectful dogs who won't try to push heavy play or rough house with him.If Luke sounds like a good fella that would fit into your home, please reach out to our rescue, ask any questions, and apply online. He is so deserving of FINALLY having a loving home. Luke is being fostered near Houston, TX.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.Save a Mastiff...Adopt, Foster, Volunteer!July 6, 2024, 11:32 am

This sweet girl lost her family when they moved and were not able to bring her. She stayed with her owner's friends until they found a safe place for her with GPMR. She was born in December 2022.Sushi is a sweetie! She was so excited to meet her fosters Bully mix, that she was a bit much at first. After some decompression time, they’re now best buds and play all the time! Sushi also does well at reading and responding to cues when playing, or gently correcting if it’s too rough. Sushi is a bit unsure around new people, but has not shown aggression, She retreats to her kennel or to her fosters upon meeting someone new. This hopefully will get better in time but in case, she would do best in a home that doesn't constantly have visitors coming and going. She is crate trained and sleeps in her kennel at night with no issue, and is trusted inside with free roam. Sushi has a high prey drive and goes after rabbits outside and tries to chase cars when they pass (she is behind the chainlink fence so she can't get to them but can see them), so she definitely needs supervision outside. A securely fenced yard is a must for her. She likely would not do well with cats or tiny/small breed dogs given her prey drive. She is a heavy chewer but has not been destructive, she just needs age and size appropriate toys. Sushi is good with her fosters 2 kids, ages 5 years and 7 months. She is big and goofy but understands being gentle around them. She is food motivated and that has helped in crate training her. Sushi can shake and sit and is very smart. She is housebroken and has had no accidents. They are working on some manners related to counter-surfing - but again, she's food motivated so that's to be expected. Sushi loves to snuggle! She does need play/exercise time but she usually plays for about 20-30 minutes then rests for a couple of hours, so even being young and energetic, she's pretty chill for a puppy. True to the breed, she can be stubborn. They’re working on recall with her and she's consistently responsive to the foster Dad, but a bit more stubborn with her foster Mom, though she is improving. With a little patience and recognition of her age and traits that are typical for the breed, she'll be a wonderful companion to the family who adopts her. Overall, she really is a sweetheart and a great dog! Sushi is being fostered in Conway, AR. She is a 4 year old girl who was surrendered by her owners because she would bark and wake the young children up during their naptime. Mia was also very bossy with the other dogs.Mia is a 'Fluffy' meaning she carries a recessive gene that causes this longer haircoat. They are not very common to see and she has a beautiful color and coat! Mia has what we call 'stranger danger'. It appears she was not socialized outside of the people in her home, so when when she sees people or dogs out the windown or when new people come over she barks at them. It will continue until she can no longer see them or she is redirected. She warms up to women faster than men. We are doing some training excercises to help her build up her confidence so she can learn she doesn't need to be barking at people. She does not bark when outside the home while on walks, just when people are coming into 'her' house. Other than barking, Mia is well behaved inside the home. She is trusted to roam freely in the house and will only chew on toys. She loves all of her toys and wants to have several to choose from. She likes to always to have a chew toy and loves to play with plush toys as well. Mia is housebroken and has had no accidents. She is learning to walk politely on a leash and requires a harness and lead.  Mia loves to run, chase, and fetch, so she would do well in a home with a large yard. She prefers supervision outside and wants to see that her people are around before she plays or does her business. She is very friendly and affectionate but can also be territorial and protective of her toys with other dogs. It took her a couple of weeks to warm up to her foster brother, but now they get along just fine, without issue. She does want to be the alpha, but that's fine with the passive resident dog. She can be placed with a submissive dog who doesn't mind her bossiness and also won't steal her toys or try to push too much play on her. While she will engage in play with the other dog, everything she does with other dogs she wants on her comfort level. Mia is not recommend for homes with small dogs or cats.Mia is in great health and ready to be adopted! She was dumped near a farm and rescued after multiple attempts by the property owners to run her off the farm. She kept going back! Unfortunately she was chasing the cattle so not welcome to stay there :) Since being in rescue, she has shown us her big personality.  Phyllis is incredibly smart, she's responsive to positive reinforcement and verbal correction.  She may not have not learned social skills and manners in her previous life, but she is so eager and quick to learn.  She has come a long way in short time and will continue to improve in a home that has consistency and boundaries.  Phyllis is very curious, undoubtably secondary to her intelligence, so she has been crated while alone.  Otherwise she'll find things to chew on that she shouldn't. She crates well but does whine a bit if she sees you and knows she could be with you instead.  Phyllis enjoys walks and has been learning to heel.  She was slowly introduced to her foster brother by joining him on walks for several days in a row before interacting with him.  It took Phyllis about a week to warm up to her foster brother, but now they get along just fine, without issue.  She does want to be the alpha, but that's fine with the passive resident dog. She can only be placed with a submissive dog who doesn't mind her bossiness. We suspect that Phyllis may have had to struggle for food, she has displayed some resource guarding behavior and has been grumpy if she thinks she has to compete for her food.  We hope this will go away as she feels more secure in daily meals, but until then, we advise that she be fed alone and counters kept clear of food for potential surfing, so she knows what is hers, and what belongs to the people.  Phyllis is a gorgeous and healthy young mastiff.  She has the intelligence and potential to be a wonderful companion to a human that is committed to continuing her basic obedience.  She requires an owner with experience and is not recommended for a first time Mastiff owner. We will be requiring her adopters to enroll her in either at home training or a basic obedience class, to help ensure a successful transition. She is not recommended for homes with kids or cats. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.Save a Mastiff...Adopt, Foster, Volunteer!July 6, 2024, 11:32 am
