Story
I had a pleasant surprise in store when I met Mack. He’s a seven month old 53 pound German Shepherd mix that was surrendered to the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 10/1 along with his brother Cheese. The surrender form stated that they were surrendered because the owners were moving AND had too many dogs. It also stated that both brothers had lived entirely outdoors and had not been taught any commands. The outdoors part was obvious from looking at the fly bites on Mack’s ears. So I assumed that Mack would need manners training. I’m assuming he probably has not had much socialization. Yet, he was really well mannered, gentle, and loving. He didn’t jump on me except one time to give me a hug. I also got kisses. He was just so happy for some attention. He looked over the wall and was whining. I’m assuming he was looking for his owners🥲. He also romped around the yard and then came back to hang out with me. He took treats gently and seem to be motivated by them. He’s obviously smart and very trainable. He needed some coaxing walking on the leash. The surrender form said he was raised with other dogs but not cats or children. I’m told he had to fight for his food so he has some scars on his head and his legs. If you have another dog, they will need to be fed separately. He really has so so much potential. He wants to be an inside dog this time around where we can chill out watching TV with his new family.

Story
Cheese is a 38 pound 7 month honey-colored German Shepherd mix that was surrendered to the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 10/1. The surrender form stated that they had too many animals AND that they were moving ! The form stated that Cheese had been raised around other dogs but not children or cats. It’s obvious that Cheese has spent most of time outside because he has fly bites on his ears. When I first took him out into the yard he was shaking and his tail was tucked. With ”sweet talk” he relaxed, and I even got a mini tail wag. He wants to make friends, but will need slow introductions to build trust. He will do best with a laid-back family. He does like treats and takes them gently. He is agile as he likes to climb. He’s also sweet, docile, calm, and alert. He’s also somewhat skittish. He had to be carried into the yard as he fought the leash. This poor scared pup didn’t understand what a leash was all about. He has some scarring on his front legs. He wants to be an inside dog this time around so he can spend more time loving on his new family. If you have another dog Cheese will need to be fed separately.

Story
I named this one year-old 65 pound mostly white Shepherd Edison. You will notice that his ribs are showing, his hair was dirty, and he had a dirty old rope around his neck. I think he was inventive and creative in finding a way to escape his previous life. Now he’s hoping for the love he’s deserved all along. He is so sweet and yet so so nervous. He was drooling because his stomach was upset. He wandered aimlessly around for a while, and then spent the rest of the time close to me. He wants and seeks affection in the gentle way of his. He hasn’t been taught the sit command, but he does back up in an effort to please. He’s very sweet, well mannered, and friendly. He would be a loyal, devoted companion. He did his business when he got out into the yard. He had a strong pull on the leash trying to go out to the yard but walked right beside me on the way back. Please, please consider tagging or meeting this boy. He needs out of the shelter probably more than most because he’s so nervous. He would love to watch TV with you curled up beside you or in his bed at your feet.

Story
Shelby is very sweet, loving and deserving of a good home where she’s well cared for. Judging from the fly bites on her ears, the fact that she’s had a litter not too long ago, and that her ribs are showing indicate to me that she has probably been an outside dog. She deserves to be an inside dog where she can get an abundance of TLC! Shelby is a three-year-old 60 pound shepherd mix that arrived at the Mesquite Shelter on 11/14 as a stray. She is already spayed! I was met at her kennel with tail wags. When I got her out into the yard, she spent a lot of time exploring with her nose. Her sense of smell is obviously very important to her. She sits for treats but doesn’t stay in that position for very long. She came to me for extra loving. I get the feeling she may not have had a whole lot of socialization. She’s friendly, loving, well mannered, easy-going, and very alert. She definitely wanted to know what was going on beyond the gate., She didn’t have a problem meeting other dogs, and she walks OK on a leash . Please open your heart and your home to this lovable pup.

Story
Pluto will keep you entertained with his antics and his inquisitiveness! He is a 9-10 month old Greek Harehound/Shepherd mix that weighs 60 pounds and came into the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 1/21 as a stray. He is definitely unique in his appearance. He’s sort of goofy in a good way. He’s very playful. When he was out in the yard, he saw me going in and came running. He’s alert and investigated everything in the yard and in the meet and greet room. He found toys and entertained himself with them. He didn’t appear to know the sit command or any other commands. At one point he was whining, and I’m assuming he was missing his owners. He’s friendly, active, and very outgoing. He required some coaxing initially to get him to walk on a leash. However, he did fine when I went to take him back to his kennel. He was not interested in meeting dogs in the bay. Because he occasionally jumps on you and he’s a big boy, he would not do well with young children until he learns some manners. He would do well with an active family. He’s too big for an apartment and would need a yard to get out and expend some energy in. He does want to be an inside dog so he can enjoy time with his new family.

Story
Meet Frieda! She is an 8-9 yr old female German Shepherd that weighs 52lbs. She came into the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 2/1 as a stray. This precious senior girl has a gentle, loving mellow personality. She enjoys going for walks, and taking in all the smells of the shelter yard. She enjoys being petted, knows the sit command and takes treats gently. Still with all the noise at the shelter she is timid and nervous. It appears she has a cataract in her left eye, and a small growth on the edge, but she doesn’t let that stop her. She still has many more years ahead of her. She hopes to find her final loving home, where she can enjoy playing in a secured backyard, but come back inside and be cuddly close to her human companions. She has been dog tested and did well, but we do always ask if you have another dog in the home to please ask the shelter for a dog test. She is a volunteer favorite as she has captured our hearts. Please come meet her and you will feel the same way.
