That's how I know she's crazy about me, and she is! I'm too smart for my own good, but with my history, I didn't have a choice. I'm darn good at surviving for a little  guy. They're pretty sure I've had my jaw broken, but that aint no biggie. I have a big attitude and I let you pet me only when I feel like being pet. I say who! I say when! I know exactly what you want, even what you're thinking, but it all depends on my mood. Sometimes I'll tell you to go pound sand and sometimes I'll roll over for a belly scratch. Controlling my situation is what I'm about. I have learned that I can generally trust most people, but a guy still has to set some boundaries! I'm a great listener and I can read people's body language well, that doesn't mean I'll do what you want though, because as I said, I'm a little jerk. I am however highly food motivated so I can be coaxed to do things and even outsmarted now and then. I'll go in a crate for a treat and suffer through it if you're not home. But, if you're home, I'm screaming at you to let me out!  None of this put me in at night garbage, I like snoozing in a big comfy bed and I'll even give you permission to love me up when I'm there. What can I say? I'm a dude. I like other dogs, but little dogs can get on my nerves. They can be too needy and prissy. I'm a big dog at heart and I like hanging out with big dogs. They are my people and I like doing big dog things. I am potty trained unless you tick me off, then you never know what I'll do, so let's not go there. I don't do leashes, though my foster mom keeps telling me we're going to have to learn if I want to go out and walk with the big dog. I need a fence to keep me in though, otherwise I'll hit the streets and get into some trouble. My foster mom is also trying to teach me commands... as if? Like I'm going to perform on command! Good luck lady! She says there's a mushy marshmallow love bug inside me, but I don't know what that nutty lady is talking about. I do feel all gooey inside when she talks to me and pets me though. Rescued: 7/19/2022 Age at the time of rescue: 3 years Current weight: 8 pounds What an amazing survivor! Cruiser has beaten the odds and is living his best life, but we know he deserves more than a shelter life. He was hit by a car and never take to a veterinarian for evaluation. His spinal column was crushed leaving him without the ability to control his bowel or urine heartbreakingly. He uses his diapers and is such a good boy! Full of energy, love and desire for life. He is fast in his wheelchair and loves running around. We are looking for a home that understands his challenges, but welcomes his passion for life. We provide him some special food to help with his challenges, but he's thriving! Fully vetted, sterilized and ready to fly home with his wheelchair! I’m a 3-year-old Shih Tzu with a sweet and gentle soul. I might seem a bit shy at first—I like to take my time to warm up to new people and places. When I first arrived here, I felt safest in my crate and needed some space. Now, I like to hang out in the same room as my humans and feel much more at ease. I’m doing really well with my house training, especially when I’m kept on a schedule. My crate is my little safe haven, but I do prefer to sleep close to my people at night. I’ve recently discovered how much fun toys can be and love to play with other dogs. Treats are also pretty awesome, and spending time in the yard is one of my favorite things. Sometimes loud noises and busy places make me a little nervous, and I’m still getting the hang of leash walking. I might freeze up on walks, but with a bit of patience, I’m slowly building my confidence. I’d love a fenced yard so I can feel free and safe while I explore. There’s a playful, happy dog inside of me, and I know that with time, love, and trust, my true personality will shine even more. I even do a little dance when I’m excited! Weighing in at just 10 pounds, I’m the perfect size to follow you around (which I love to do!) and snuggle up for some cozy downtime. I’m always in a good mood and full of energy. Playing is my absolute favorite thing, whether it’s with chew toys, bones, fetch in the yard, or even soccer—I’m pretty athletic for my size! I live with two senior Shih Tzu foster siblings. While they’re not as into playtime as I am, I think they secretly love having me around. I also adore my foster kids. They’re great at keeping up with my energy, and when we’re done, I’m ready for cuddles on the couch. At night, I’ve got a cute habit of putting myself to bed—how’s that for adorable? I’m still learning the ropes with potty training, but having doggy role models is helping me improve every day. I’ve mastered my crate, though I might whimper just a little when I first settle in. I haven’t had much experience with leash training yet and can be a bit unsure, so a fenced yard is a must—I love the freedom to zoom around and explore safely. I’m a sweet, sociable pup who gets along with dogs of all sizes and loves kids. I haven’t met any cats yet, but I think I’d be willing to give it a shot. Oh, and you’ll be happy to know I’m not much of a barker—just the occasional whimper here and there. Meet Bruno and Rodent, an adorable Maltese-Shih Tzu father-daughter duo who are as inseparable as they are charming. Bruno, estimated to be 3–4 years old, weighs 12 pounds and his 7-month-old daughter, Rodent—affectionately nicknamed “Ro”—is a petite 7-pound bundle of joy. Together, they make the perfect pair of playful, cuddly companions, each bringing their own unique personality and quirks to the table.Bruno is a gentle and affectionate pup who thrives on being close to his people and his daughter. He loves snuggling on the couch, proudly parading around with his favorite stuffed toys, and going for short walks. While he takes a little time to adjust to new surroundings, he blossoms into a confident and happy companion once he feels secure. Rodent, on the other hand, is a silly and playful pup who enjoys zooming around the house and chasing her tail before settling in for cuddles. She’s self-entertaining and loves barking at her reflection in the mirror, keeping everyone entertained with her goofy antics.Both Bruno and Rodent are crate-trained and feel comfortable in their crates, though Bruno may bark a bit when first crated. They are making good progress with house training, doing well with potty pads indoors, but will need patience and consistency to fully master the skill. Bruno and Rodent are also great with other dogs, and while they haven’t been exposed to children, their calm and friendly demeanor suggests they could do well with kids. They’ve previously lived with cats and are undergoing slow introductions to the cats in their foster home, indicating they could likely coexist with feline friends in their future home.Bruno and Rodent are moderately energetic, enjoying playtime with toys and each other but not requiring long walks to tire them out. A bit of exercise and attention are all they need before they’re ready to settle in for naps and cuddles. They’re both vocal at times, especially when meeting new people or responding to loud noises, so this might be something to consider for apartment living.Bruno is healthy overall but does have a dermoid on his right eye, a condition where a hair growing out of his eye. Surgery is recommended in the next few years. Starla is a confident, playful, and affectionate two year old, 16 pound Maltese-Shih Tzu mix with a heart full of love to give. Starla came into our rescue via another rescue in Iowa. It is thought that she was given up because she required hip surgery due to a previous injury, possibly being hit by a car. She’s adjusting well to her new foster home and is ready to find her forever family. Starla is confident, playful, and loving. She enjoys sitting on laps and is a true cuddle bug, always seeking close contact with her humans. Sleeping in bed with her family is heaven for her. She loves playing with other dogs and can be found whining trying to get her senior foster brother to play! Starla is an active girl who loves to play and engage with her family. She enjoys running around the yard and would thrive in a home where she can get plenty of exercise and stimulation. She does well with walks but is still learning proper leash manners. A fenced yard would be ideal for her to burn off some energy. Starla is doing great with house training but there may be some accidents as she adjusts to a new home. Starla knows a few commands like sit and stand. She’s very smart and quick to learn, making her a great candidate for further training. She would benefit from some behavioral training, but she is treat-motivated and eager to please. Starla would thrive in an active home, preferably with a family who enjoys outdoor activities. She will do well in a home with children over the age of ten who have had experience interacting with a small dog. She gets along well with other dogs and would love a small canine companion who has a similar energy level. Starla recently had successful hip surgery (femoral head and neck excision) and is recovering well. While she’s already bouncing around more than she should, she requires at-home therapy to support her recovery and won’t be available for adoption until the first week in February. But applications for her adoption are being accepted now. Depending on her stage of recovery, her new family may need to continue performing some in-home therapy after adoption. These are the requirements for Starla’s new home: · Starla needs a family who can provide her with plenty of daily exercise and playtime, including long walks. A secure fenced yard would be ideal. · A family who is home much of the day and will include Starla in their daily activities. · Starla recently had hip surgery and her new family may need to continue with in-home therapy for a while after her adoption. It is imperative that her new family commit to doing so. · A family with children over the age of ten who have had experience with a small dog will be considered. · Starla would enjoy another small playful dog in the family, but it is not a deal breaker. · Starla loves to cuddle and be near her people, and sleeping in bed at night with her family members is a must. · Hew new family should live within 30 miles of Roseville, MN and be willing to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue reunion every September. Starla is spayed, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. She may need to complete at-home therapy after her adoption depending on the healing of her hip and her new family must agree to do required exercises. Are you looking for a best friend? A sweet dog, that is adorable and just a little bit shy? If you are, I am your girl! My name is Daisy Mae. I am 5 years old, and weigh 8 pounds. Everyone thinks I am cute as I always wag my tail and will roll over for a tummy rub once I know you. Daisy came to our rescue after her owner passed away after a serious illness. This past year, Daisy spent all her time inside and had to rely exclusively on potty pads. Her foster mom is now frequently taking her outside for potty and Daisy is doing a well at learning to go “potty outside”. Daisy had a very sheltered but loving home before she came into rescue. Now she needs to learn to enjoy walks and outside activities, and to socialize with people and other dogs. Her future family must commit to providing time for Daisy’s outside experiences and socialization. Daisy is a bit shy at first, but as soon as she knows you all is well and she is very happy. Sitting by you on the couch or sleeping at the foot of your bed are Daisy’s favorite past times. Daisy has really benefited from having another small, calm dog in her foster home. So her foster mom is looking for a home that will give her a canine friend as a companion and to also help Daisy learn how to be a more confident dog. She needs a quiet, calm household with adults only. Daisy will be adopted to a family within the Twin Cities area, no more than 40 miles from Burnsville, MN. Daisy is a very special girl who wants a perfect home and family. In order to ensure that, here are the requirements that are required for her new family: • Daisy needs a family that is experienced with dogs and will continue to help her with training and socialization. This means time devoted to her socialization/training and learning other important doggy behaviors, such as leash walks outside, exposure to new, safe experiences, and lots of ear scratching and belly rubs. • Daisy’s new home should include another confident, small dog who will help her learn by being a role model and friend. • An adults only family that works from home or is home much of the day would be best for Daisy. • Daisy is not fully trained for going potty outside. Her new family needs to understand this and must take her out every couple hours during the day, although she can does not require this overnight. She will definitely want to sleep in bed with her new family as she loves to be near you! Daisy is not crate trained, but does just fine in a gated area when family is gone. • Daisy’s new family should live within 40 miles of Burnsville, MN and commit to attending the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held each year in September.
