Story
Pepper Spice Boy is a happy-go-lucky, joyful dog. He is affectionate and loves to give kisses, and is very quiet and polite. He is never underfoot, doesn't jump on people, and won't bother your belongings. Pepper adores walks: Great on a leash, he doesn't pull. Check out his latest: a Christmas video. Do you like an independent spirit? He just needs to be handled in a certain way (by adults only who are experienced dog owners, ideally knowledgeable about Chihuahuas). He may be able to live with another small, playful, friendly, beta dog. Pepper lets you know his thoughts about passersby (that is, he will bark), so he needs a detached home. And as he can be an escape artist, he needs to live in an interior neighborhood, not close to main roads; also one that is quiet, without a lot of people walking dogs. When it's time for naps and bedtime, Pepper tucks himself in (see his video where he puts himself under a sheet), and he sleeps through the night without a peep -- 10 hours at least! During the day, he goes potty about every 4 hours. Pepper loves his food and won't beg for yours. When he gets excited, like before mealtimes, he stands on his back feet, pawing the air with his front feet, and twirling around like a circus dog. So cute! His awesomeness does not stop there: Pepper is crate- and house-trained. He doesn't need to be crated, however. Very smart, he knows Wait, Stay, No, Come, Let's go, Stop, Want to go out?, Go back?, Move Over, and Leave it. Check out his other videos to see this pup in action! He is clearly psychic because he chose Chapel Hill to win over Duke at their match on April 2, 2022! This sweet boy can't wait to find his forever home! HISTORY Pepper had been living with Nikki (another small dog) and a couple in their 90s. When the husband died, the wife could no longer care for either dog. IAR took both Pepper and Nicki into the program. Nikki was adopted. HEALTH Pepper is up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped, heartworm negative, and neutered. He had his teeth cleaned in March 2022. He came to us grossly overweight at 17.6 pounds. He is now at his ideal weight, ~11 pounds. He recovered from an ACL tear with acupuncture, chiropractic, MYOS, Tea pills, and a joint supplement. PHYSICAL Pepper is white with brown on his ears, face, and tail (what there is of it!).

Story
Meet Taco! Taco is a young male chihuahua ready to take on the world as a recently domesticated (rescued) boy. He is house trained, crate trained, and working on basic commands. Taco is a cuddle monster, gaining his strength from skin to skin contact. He really wants you to hold him like a baby (but he will settle for anything). He loves companionship, toys, chews, playing with his foster sibling, spending time outside and most of all - food. All bark and no bite, Taco is still learning how to use his inside voice when spotting others on walks. His manners are a work in progress and luckily he is highly motivated by treats. Taco is playful, jovial, and excitable as a moderate to high energy dog. He is eager to spend quality time with those around him, expressing his affection with tenacity. He will never stop reminding you how much love he has in his heart!***Please Note: All the available dogs listed on our website are getting spoiled in private foster homes. If someone has caught your eye and you wish to arrange a meet and greet, we do need you to fill out the adoption application. When your adoption application is received our screening team will verify the information given. Once your application has been confirmed and approved, we will be send it over to the foster parent for review to determine if your home is a good match for the dog. In the event one lucky dog receives multiple applications, please know we do not select based on a first come basis. We try our best to select the best-fit for our animals and families. ***

Story
We rescued Peanut almost 8 years ago when he was around 2 or 3. For years he was a cuddly, quirky dog. Over the past few years, he has become increasingly adverse to leaving his pen and going outside. As a result, he began using the bathroom in the house. Also when our pet sitter tried to get him out of the closet to go outside, he hit her. He also bit me when I tried to clip his nails. And most recently tried to bite my son when my husband put Peanut on our sons lap. He bit my husband instead. Currently, Peanut stays in his pen and goes outside to potty and then wants to quickly return to his pen. The vet informed us that Peanut's aggression is most likely a result of pain or sickness. I gave him gabapentin, but it doesn't seem to do much for him. I feel that he couldn't possibly be happy living in a pen. We are strongly considering euthanasia, but wanted to give him one more chance.

Story
May need to eventually use a wheel chair due to arthritis in her backI am a sweet 5 yr old girl. I came to rescue via a vet visit. My owner wanted to euthanize me because I was in pain and he couldn’t afford to take care of me. I went into rescue to hopefully get better with medication. It was determined that I have DDD in my back (degenerative disc disease) for about 2 weeks I lost the use of my back legs. I was then placed in a wheelchair which I mastered quickly. My people had come to except that would be my life going forward. Boy did I fool them cause I determined that was not the life I wanted. First I started briefly walking on my knees then I slowly started standing up and taking a few steps. Next thing you know I’m running everywhere. My legs are still too weak to jump or stand up on my hind legs but my place is to always be in a humans lap to snuggle so I’m building those muscles back up. My fosters showed me so much love and patience I just wanted to be better.. My foster mom calls me her shadow.and her bed mole because I like to dwell under the covers. I follow her everywhere and love lap snuggles. My favorite place to sleep is under the blankets snuggled as close as I can get to my person.I have a favorite blanket that I like to suckle and nibble on. I am vocal but not as bad as most of my relatives usually are, I’m more of an alert system. I’m completely house trained and will let you know when I need to go out. I’m great with all dogs and cats but prefer not to share my persons lap although I will tolerate it if I have to. To apply for me please visit STFFAR. Org for an online application. December 13, 2024, 2:07 pm
