This is the year. 2024 the year of Leslie. Leslie spent all of 2023 with us, learning how to be a dog... and how to build a relationship with people, and well... her improvements have been significant. She's come incredibly far, and in the right home, we are sure she will continue to make strides. Let's just get the "pit"-falls out of the way. Leslie has allergies. She's on a prescription diet and medication to help keep her happy and comfortable. Yes, that means it can get pricey, but good news, we know it works. Cars are terrifying. Getting in them to Leslie is asking her to chew off her front leg... which if her allergies are flaring up, she might prefer to do. She is getting more confident walking on the roads, but likes to take coverage behind a bush if overwhelmed. Once she's comfortable with you, she will let you pick her up to put her in a vehicle. We're working on this. Leslie loves to chase. And as such... she would be best in a home without cats or small animals. These are just her natural instincts and those are hard to shut off. Leslie also loves to chase and kill bugs. She lacks the common sense about which bugs might sting her and which ones taste bad...but we love the effort. Don't stand between her and a bug, but also...save her from herself and don't let her get stung! The Good - Leslie loves most dogs. She prefers one-on-one play and does well with dogs that are playful, yet also respectful. She is often in charge of "puppy-sitting" when little ones find their way to the shelter. A well-adjusted, dog-friendly dog already established in your home, would be a dream come true for Leslie. She can be a bit bossy with other dogs, but someone has to take charge. Ideally, Leslie's home would have a fenced yard. She loves to romp and play, and a fence would allow her the freedom to do so safely. It will also help with her housebreaking. She's good about going to the bathroom outside, but on leash...within 6 feet of a human... that's scary. So to help her be successful in her home, a fence would be necessary. Now, Leslie is one of those girls, who is going to make you have to work very hard for her affection. And she will *most definitely* give you judgmental stares. To be judged by Leslie, is to be loved by Leslie. If there's another dog that loves you, her love will become more apparent more quickly. To earn Leslie's trust and to see her goofy side come out is the ultimate gift, and those best gifts come to those who wait. We know what you're thinking... Yes, Hilda is a Great Dane with a Danish name! This lovable lady is Hilda, and while she is blind, that hasn't stopped her from being the sweet, big goofball we know her to be. Hilda hasn't had the best life before coming to the shelter, but she's ready to make her next home one full of fun and love! Hilda enjoys playing with her toys and romping around the yard. She's quite affectionate, loves to give kisses, cuddle, and soak up all the love she can get. Hilda is looking for a home where she can be the only pet and where she can stick to a consistent routine. Although she is newly blind, she is learning to navigate well and has been learning commands to help her out. A steady routine will be important to help her adjust to her new home. She is looking for an adult-only home. Experienced dog handlers would be a huge plus for this lady as she would have a great deal of learning to do in a new environment. Stella is an affectionate and very playful gal. She loves squeaking her toys, going on long sniffy walks, and snuggling up for pets. When in the yard she often gets the zoomies and runs in circles especially after a good butt scratch. Smart and eager to please, Stella knows a variety of tricks, including sit, down, paw, and speak. Stella has shown to get over-excited about all things related to food (Who can blame her?). As a result, Stella needs a home willing to help her acclimate by working on some basic training exercises as she adjusts. However, once given some time to get comfortable, Stella will be a fabulous companion to live with and be your absolute best friend! Sunny is a bright and happy boy who is ready to be the shining light in your life. He made his way to the shelter through no fault of his own and has been friendly and loving with everyone he's met here. He's a bit of a bowling ball and would likely knock over small children with his exuberance, so older kids would be best. We don't have any idea what he would think of cats, but he has lived with other dogs in the past and may be willing to do so again. Nino is 45lbs of pure fun!! He’s a nice, playful, cuddly boy too. Appears to love everyone he meets. He is known here as our 5K a day dog, meaning he would LOVE to be someone's running buddy! Nino ended up at the shelter due to housing restrictions; he was well-loved by his past owners who were saddened to give him up but had no alternatives. Nino is a very loving dog. And an athletic boy who enjoys playing games and running around in the yard! Nino has lived with other dogs in past, but if there were a resident dog in the home, we’d want to do a dog meeting here at the shelter to see if personalities seemed to work well. He would not do well with a cat. Sturdy older kids or teens could live with Nino, but he would not be suited to small kids because they’re too exciting and he’s exuberant. Yzma is a terribly shy Mini Aussie pup. She was a part of a litter of pups whose breeder was unsuccessful in selling them, so they were surrendered at over 5 months old. Yzma is shy with humans and any progress she has made has come mostly from her in-house babysitter dog Leslie. Yzma does not walk on leash, and does not enjoy being touched. She is beginning to approach the people she knows, but would prefer to have short interactions with no pressure from the human. Yzma will need a very patient home who is willing to respect her boundaries as she becomes more comfortable. Due to her fearful nature, Yzma needs a secure physically fenced yard at this time to learn about house training and leash skills. This girl would benefit from a dog friend in her next home to help show her the ropes, however, this dog has to go at her pace and not be too forceful. We would consider sending Yzma home with her brother Mr. Smee who is in need of a hospice home for his congenital heart condition. She is available for adoption or foster to fearful dog experienced homes. IF you are interested in fostering her, you must live in NH within 30 minutes of the shelter, as a home visit is required for all foster homes.
