Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Zara 6278 is a blonde shepherd, between 4-6 years old. She has recently been spayed and is up to date on vaccines. Zara is still learning about living inside, walking on a leash, and having faith in two leggeders (humans). It is fairly obvious from some of her behaviors that she has lived a life of neglect. She will not eat if anyone is looking at her and desperately fears men. Zara has begun to trust the man in her foster home and will walk with him and another dog, but only if a female puts a leash on her first. She will not allow a man to touch her. Zara does not seem to know any commands. We have been working on sit, come, and her name. Zara is bright and affectionate and loves to play with our other dogs. She has not been cat tested or kid tested. She had occasional accidents in the house if her way outside appears to be blocked by a man. Zara needs a patient, woman only home, or a home with a soft spoken and gentle man. Approved adopters may email her foster at dianepmcintyre@gmail.com  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.August 19, 2024, 3:37 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Blair is a 60 lbs GSD.  She was born in February 2023 and surrendered to VGSR because she went after chicken.  Imagine that, a GSD with prey drive… Blair is spayed, UTD on shots, on preventives, and crate trained. Bottom line up front, Blair is the type of dog I would adopt if I were in the market for another dog.  She is healthy, energetic, has good prey and toy drive, and is food motivated.  She has had some formal training, walks reasonably well on a leash, and has good recall.   Having said that, I will add that she can come on a bit strong both with humans and with other dogs and she is especially protective of “her” backyard.  Some people find this a little intimidating, but it’s a manageable characteristic that can probably be improved with maturity and a little work. Blair is loyal, affectionate, playful, and protective.  Lives with two other dogs and plays with both, although she can be a bit rough.  Can be selective with other dogs, so introductions will have to be supervised. She also has a tendency to jump up and lick your face, which can be a bit disconcerting.  For this reason her interactions with small children, or children not used to youthful, energetic dogs should be closely supervised. Blair needs an outlet for her energy.  Her ideal adopter is someone with at least a modicum of GSD experience and willing to further her training and find mutually rewarding activities.   To find out more about Blair, please contact me at arivederci@aol.com   Blair is being fostered in Arlington (222040 and typically participates in the Potomac Yard adoption event.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.August 19, 2024, 3:37 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Timmone came into rescue from an overcrowded rural shelter where he was taken in as a stray. Timmone is a somewhat timid dog until he becomes familiar with his environment. He listens well and has good manners overall. He does enjoy a good game of chase when he is in control of a ball and is always up for the challenge of playtime with his resident brother. He is moderately active and enjoys running and being chased by his brother. Although we don't know much about Timmone's history, it is apparent that he has had some basic training and does basic commands eagerly. He is learning to play with balls or toys without tearing them up. Timmone is becoming a very nice well rounded dog in his foster home. Timmone is crate trained, house trained,, and is working on improving his leash manners. He is up to date on vaccines, microchipped, neutered, and heartworm negative. Timmone is friendly with people and does better with slow introductions. He is mostly tolerant of other dogs. He seems tolerant of the resident cat and seems to enjoy watching the cat at a distance. Timonne is affectionate and does enjoy being with his person/ people. He is moderate energy and enjoys running in the yard or peaceful walks. Timmone sleeps very well through the night after lights off and does not bark at all until he gets excited to see his person in the morning. If you are interested in meeting Timmone please email his foster at donnab.equicare@gmail.com. Timmone is being fostered in Chesapeake.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.August 19, 2024, 3:37 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Bane has now been with us a few months and he is still patiently waiting for his furever home.  Bane is a fairly typical GSD. He is very smart, eager to please and very loyal. Bane bonds quickly to his people and is a typical Velcro shepherd. Bane does very well with the other 3 resident dogs and with all other dogs he has met since arriving in foster care. Bane walks beautifully on a leash and loves going for walks (his motto and theme song is, "I will follow you, wherever you may go...").  He often goes with us to farmers markets, wineries, breweries, Home Depot, etc., and has always done very well everywhere we have taken him (including the vet's office).  Because Bane bonds hard to his people, he can have some anxiety when you crate him and leave him, although he has done fine when we've left him out with the other dogs.  He also can be a little nervous of strange visitors on his property and will need continued positive reinforcement to learn visitors are friendly and safe.  If you are an approved adopter and interested in learning more about Bane, you can contact his foster mom at emily@hartman1.com. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.August 19, 2024, 3:37 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Please contact Tammy (tnhuck@yahoo.com) for more information about this pet.Update 10 June 2024 Pancake is up to a whopping 45 pounds!  Fortunately, she is food-motivated so she is making really good progress.  The vet suggested that she gain about another 10 pounds. Her sparkling personality is also shining through even more.  She loves to play fetch with tennis balls, chew on Nylabones, and play with furry squeaky toys, which she also enjoys shredding.  And that’s okay, she is a happy young lady who can entertain herself, given the right toys.  She does love interaction with human beings and she will come over for attention and follow a person around the home.  And she is a good guard dog with a loud, authoritative bark! To burn off some of her energy, I have taken Pancake for short (1-2 mile) runs around a local park.  She gets distracted easily so it is a bit of a challenge, but she does enjoy the extra time outside and she is noticeably more poopered out at the end of the day.  Her leash manners are improving but they still need some work.  Sometimes she walks with neighbors and their dogs, so she is learning socialization skills. Pancake has attended two adoption events and done reasonably well.  She is a little anxious in new situations but she should get better about that as her confidence grows. 4/4/24. Pancake is a really sweet 3.5 year old white shepherd.   The best part about Pancake is her personality.  She is affectionate, house-trained and crate-trained.  She is well-socialized with people and she generally ignores or tolerates other dogs.  Her foster sister Pawlina 6087 is the same way, so they usually hang out in different parts of the living room.  Pancake enjoys being outside and going for walks; the world is her oyster!  Her leash manners could use some work – she is stronger than she looks and she likes to sniff pretty much everything. Unfortunately, Pancake has exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, or EPI.  This means that she has to be on a restricted diet and have enzymes on her food.  The condition is easily managed but it makes her upkeep a little more expensive and time-consuming, as the enzymes need to be added to her food with warm water, and then the mixture needs to sit for at least 20 minutes before serving. We are working to get Pancake’s weight back up to normal and to figure out what diet will work for her, as well as her enzyme dose.  She had a vet appointment in March and she did great.  Her blood test came back negative for heartworms, and her fecal sample was negative for parasites.  She also had her nails trimmed.  She came into rescue with some sores on her legs; they are healing nicely and the vet removed the blue tape on them that can be seen in some of the photos.  Her right ear doesn’t stand up straight, and the vet said perhaps she had a hematoma in her younger years, but it adds to her charm.  Pancake behaved perfectly the entire time at her doctor’s appointment, she had no problem being handled by the vet and the techs. Pancake is currently living in a condo and she is not a barker, so she would do fine in any type of household.  She visits her foster cousins on the weekends in a single-family home, and she doesn’t play in the yard with the other dogs, she prefers the company of people. Pancake is spayed and up-to-date on shots.  She is living in Arlington, VA and she plans to attend adoption events in Northern Virginia.  Approved adopters may contact her foster parent at tnhuck@yahoo.com.  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.August 19, 2024, 3:37 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Meet Oden! This not quite 2 year old GSD/Malinois cross has been with his foster 2 months now after being owner surrendered to a shelter in early 2024.  Pros: - Gorgeous. Will make people ooh and ahh everywhere he goes. - Affectionate. Loves to put his head in your lap and get all the pets while gazing into your soul. - Loyal. Will keep an eye on and stay with his person. - Bright. Easy to train and is both food and toy motivated.  - Non-reactive. He's been friendly and polite when meeting dogs, cats, horses, and people.  - Low prey drive. Has made no attempts to murder little furry friends.  - Trained. Does not have accidents in the house, crate trained, knows basic obedience, walks well on leash and listens well off leash.  - Playful. Will play play play all day long with his person, other dogs, or even by himself with a fun toy. - Settles. Has a good off switch and will chill quietly in the house. - Minimally embarrassing. Can go public places without losing his mind and acting a complete fool. - Farm-proofed. Has been with 4 wheelers, tractors, trail ridden with horses, been exposed to livestock, etc.    Things to Consider: - Higher energy and higher drive than your average dog. Please do research into his breed mix first and make sure this is what you're looking for in a canine companion. - Oden came with zero training, so everything he has learned is recent and could backslide if training and good handling practices are not continued.  - Food intensity. Required a slow feeder and lots of practice at waiting, as well how to take treats without severing fingers, when he first came. He's much better now but this is something to keep in mind with children or other pets in the house.  - Enjoys rough high energy play with other dogs. Can be overwhelming for gentle natured or more low key dog friends.  - Kennel stress. Oden did not do well in the shelter environment and arrived to his foster in poor physical condition, including being significantly underweight with multiple self inflicted wounds. He likes his crate now and goes in voluntarily for naps, but long periods in lock up (such as dog boarding, etc) may result in problems again.  - Mystery tremors. Oden has intermittent leg tremors, primarily affecting his back legs and usually after exercise. A vet workup has been unable to determine the cause, and it may simply be due to him continuing to get in shape after arriving in such poor condition, but at this point we cannot say for certain and want any potential adopters to be aware of the issue.    Approved adopters who think Oden may be the right match for them are welcome to email his foster at tgillisp1@gmail.com with questions or to set up a meet-n-greet. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.August 19, 2024, 3:37 pm
