Story
Intake Reason: Returned due to allergiesWeight: 63.4# Known with: ·Cats: Unknown ·Dogs: Best with calm dogs. ·Kids: Did well with teenagers but will need to be supervised with young children. Personality:Greetings, my name is River and I am a beautiful southern belle from Alabama. I was quickly adopted by a wonderful person but came back to WCHS when they discovered that I made them sneeze. I adore people and certainly do not want to be the cause of them feeling miserable so I agreed it made sense to look for a new home. I am a gentle gal who could use a little confidence building. Since learning new skills can boost a girl's self-assuredness, I think it would be lovely to take some classes with you so I am introduced to new things. We could take obedience classes and participate in rally or get involved in canine sports, practice nose-work or just play dog parkour when we are out and about. I already know the cues for ‘sit', ‘down' and ‘paw/shake' and think I could learn many more human words with your patient and positive training techniques. I have had fun joining a playgroup with calm dogs at the shelter; I am not a fan of crazy and rambunctious pups. I sort of fancy myself as the group police-pooch when the other dogs are playing; I figure someone has to referee. The person who I stayed with for a while found that I liked car rides and was comfortable in a crate, especially when it has comfy cozy blankets and comes with long-lasting frozen Kong treat to keep me busy. I had a brief encounter with a feline; I was off-leash, saw the kitty and whined a bit and the cat did not move. That does not make me an expert on felines, but perhaps I have potential to live in harmony with them. I understand the concept of house-training but when I first come to my new home it would be wise to give me plenty of potty breaks until we learn each other's signals and routines. I am a friendly and affectionate gal who is quiet in the house; I am a big fan of snuggle sessions after a fun day of play. At over 60 pounds, I may be a skosh big for your lap but I would be honored to have a place at your side. I am an active lass who will need physical and mental exercise each day to keep me happy and healthy; it is important for me to keep my brain busy and engaged. I also love a rousing game of fetch. I spent time with some teenagers and did well; I have been known to jump up on people so I should be supervised if tiny tykes are around. I am a spectacular pooch with loads of love to give and promise to be a loyal companion forever. I hope you stop by to meet me because I know you will be enamored by my dazzling personality. #2

Story
Intake Reason: Surrendered due to owner's healthWeight: 73# Known with: ·Cats: Unknown ·Dogs: Does well in WCHS playgroups ·Kids: Exposed to newborn thru teenager--did wellPersonality: Playful, active, likes to play fetchHello, my name is Ozone, I am 81 pounds of spectacular and I find myself in a circumstance where I need a new home. I lived with a person my whole life but unfortunately their health took a turn for the worse and they could no longer take care of me so I came to WCHS. Since I am an optimistic lad, I am making the best of my situation and spending my time romping in playgroups, taking wonderful walks with volunteers and keeping my brain busy with enrichment. I am a strong boy who is a bit strong-willed; some have even called me stubborn. In my defense sometimes I lock onto a fabulous smell and feel I must insist upon pulling towards it. I suppose one of the things I should work on is being a little more polite when on a leash; I tend to pull towards things of interest. I have a wanderlust spirit and must confess that if I am off-leash I have been known to run off in search of adventure. I do thoroughly enjoy going on walks because I have a great nose and there are so many wonderful odors to explore. I like to run and have sort of a digital method of walking; zero or one. I stop to soak in a smell, then run off to the next scent where I stop again and then repeat the process. In my previous home I lived with children from newborn to teenagers; I have lots of energy so running with kids was a good way to burn some energy. I used to play with some neighborhood dogs which also kept me active and was able to get exercise running around in my fenced yard playing fetch. In my previous home I was comfortable in a crate. It was my own private little den with comfy cozy blankets and fun toys where I could relax when I was alone in the house or snooze at bedtime. I am a smart boy and already know the cues for ‘sit', ‘down' and ‘shake/paw'; with your patient and positive training I am sure I could learn many more human words. I understand the concept of house-training and would ask to go outside by whining and pacing. When I get to my new home it would be wise to give me plenty of opportunities for potty breaks until we learn each other's signals and routines. I am a firm believer in daily exercise, both physical and mental, and would love to play brain teaser games or using a foraging mat at mealtime. I am friendly and affectionate; I would love to have long snuggle sessions in the evenings after a day filled with fun. I am a cheerful pup who is sure to bring sunshine and laughter to your home; I know we can have a magnificent life together. I hope you come by to make my acquaintance because I think it will be love at first sight.#2

Story
Intake Reason: transferred from MADACCWeight: 45#Known with: ·Cats: introduced to 2 in foster; chased but not aggressive with ·Dogs: loves other dogs; lived with 1 & 2 yr old shepherd and terrier for approximately one week; WCHS recommends Anja goes home with another dog ·Kids: unknownHi, my name is Anja; that name has German and Russian roots and means ‘grace'. I am a shy, sensitive and charming girl with a certain simple elegance so I think my name is very fitting. I came to WCHS from MADACC (Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission) where I was a stray. I have not had too many opportunities for socialization so lots of things make me nervous and are even kind of scary. When I am in an uncomfortable situation or I am afraid of something my first instinct is to run away from it; perhaps that is how I ended up as a lost dog. Anyway, the reason I mention that is because I will be depending on you to keep me safe and out of trouble; since I am a flight-risk it might be prudent for me to always wear a Martingale collar. And it goes without saying that I should not be off-leash unless I am in a secure area; at least until I have a great recall and develop some confidence. I am still a youngster so there are many things I need to learn, discover and explore. I am hoping for a family who has experience with my breed and has the time and desire to help me safely navigate the world and allow me to experience new things each day. Learning new skills and conquering new situations can do wonders to boost a pup's self-assuredness. I will need you to encourage me to take on new challenges but let me go at my own pace with lots of praise; the key is to stay calm and go slow. I crave affection and melt when someone gives me tender scratches under my chin; I may just roll over to ask for a full-blown belly-rub. Although I am cautious, I am curious about the world around me and like to explore with my nose; I will walk with you if you coax me. I think tasty treats are very nice but must confess sometimes I am too anxious to think about eating; cuddles and praise are always welcome. I have participated in a playgroup at the shelter and it took me a little while to warm up so I could relax and enjoy myself; I do best with calm dogs. I do happen to be the owner of a spectacular schnoz so maybe we can put that to good use. Using a foraging mat at mealtime could help keep my brain busy and scent games would be a fun to learn. I have incredible bright eyes and a magnificently long tail. I think I need to grow into my tail a bit because it drags on the ground when I walk; I am going to be a stunning and tall young lady. Since I am just a pup I will need practice with house-training. It would be lovely to take some obedience classes with you; those would not only be a great way for us to build a bond but they would be fabulous socialization opportunities for me. I know with your positive techniques, patience and love I will blossom into a stupendous dog who trusts you and promises to be loyal forever. I know I can bring joy and happiness into your life and would really like to meet you. Stop by and ask for the enchanting and graceful Anja.#2

Story
Adira was found running at large in Memphis and was subsequently brought to a veterinary clinic by a kind MPD Officer. She was severely emaciated and scared. “Addie” as she has come to be known, quickly made herself at home at her Foster’s farm while she gained weight and recuperated. She is now around 65 pounds and estimated to be 2-3 years old. Addie loves to play ball, go on long walks through the woods, run, ride in cars, and snuggle. She is wonderful for baths, tolerates nail trims, and more than anything, just wants to be anywhere her human is. Although she is high energy when the opportunity presents itself, Addie would make a suitable apartment dog for someone who works from home. Her foster family works from home and she spends the entire workday snuggled on her bed beside her foster mom while she works. Addie is kennel trained, but she is a large dog and would not be suited for kenneling all day while family or individual works. Addie will do best with an active lifestyle and plenty of time for play. She does need to be the only dog as she is an alpha female and does not share her humans or her territory. Addie is deeply loyal and very protective. She is friendly to new people if her person is friendly to them. Once adopted she will travel via private transport Rescue Vet (transport cost is $160.00) to a location closest to you. Story
THIS GUY! Wow! He has come a LONG away since he's been in our care. He was scheduled for euthanasia simply because they were out of room. He and his brother Happy. So a Good Samaritan pulled them both and spared them from certain death. They have been amazing, becoming very social because they have been attending doggy daycare everyday and receiving hands in one on one professional training! Captain is approx 7-8 months old. He's shy at first around new things but warms up quickly. He is kennel trained and house trained and it goes without saying he's dog friendly since he attends doggy daycare! He's super easy to get along with just needs a patient family because he is a bit shy at first around new things. He's with Kip and Michele in their home in Memphis, Tn. Once an application has been submitted and approved Kip, who has been working with Captain one on one for several months, will speak to you and tell you all about him. Transport cost is an additional $185. If you would like to make Captain a part of your family Please follow the link below to our adoption application . https://forms.gle/APKvbgFJcaRvgKgk9

Story
Everyone meet Jax! This super sweet shy guy is one amazing pup with a huge heart. Jax is going to need someone very patient with him. He needs time to adjust. That’s all he needs is time and patience. He’s timid initially, but once warmed up, he steals the show and your heart at the same time. He would probably do better with someone with another dog. Jax is great with other dogs and puppies and they help him feel more comfortable which allows him to come out of his shell quicker. He loves walks and car rides!!! Jax has fostered with two of our fosters here in Memphis and they would both be happy to give you a little more information about him. We can’t wait to find him a wonderful home of his own so he can settle in and adjust for good. Once adopted, Jax will travel via RescueVet Transport to his new family. They travel each and every weekend from Memphis, Tennessee to the north east, delivering pups along the way as far north as West Greenwich, Rhode Island. Transport is an additional $185. If you would like to make this amazing guy part of your family please follow the link below to our adoption application. Our turnaround time is typically less than 24 hours so please be prepared before you submit your application. https://forms.gle/APKvbgFJcaRvgKgk9
