Story
Bernie is being fostered in Henderson, Kentucky.
Drumroll please!!!!! Announcing Bernie the beautiful black tri boy! Bernie is one big, bouncy, boisterous boy! He loves everyone and everything, including other dogs. He is young, about 2, and very, very playful. He loves his toys and loves having his people play with him. He is quite large and he is overweight but with additional exercise and weight loss kibble he is losing the extra pounds. Bernie weighs about 67 lbs and still needs to lose about 5-10 lbs but for a dog that is a lot so we are taking it slow and steady!
Bernie’s original owner had to give him up to enter into a care facility. He then went to a home where he was kept in the garage. He probably had a lot of treats, some table food and very little exercise. When he did go outside, he wandered off, probably looking for companionship. He is a Velcro dog, so much so that he doesn’t want to go outside unless he knows for sure you are going too.
He has quite a fine appetite (but he does not like green beans) and enjoys treats. He seems to sit automatically when he knows a treat is on its way. He’s very smart, letting us know he doesn’t like green beans first by carrying out the bowl with only the green beans remaining in it and whining, and the next day by hiding the green beans under the cabinet. Did we mention that he is smart? He is a talker and a communicator too. He responds to some questions with vocalizations. He asks for things he wants, like rolling onto his back for a belly rub. He is SUCH a ham!
He has been in his foster home for three weeks and has never had an accident in the house and when he has been alone in the house for several hours at a time has never damaged anything. He has great house and potty manners! Probably a master's degree in house manners and could teach others the same! This boy is SMART, SMART, SMART! He is learning so many fun things in his foster home! He still jumps up on people when he meets them because he is so excited to see a friend, but is learning not to. He just wants to play, have fun and that’s what he’s wanting when he puts his paws on you.
Because of his size and his age, very young children would probably not be a good match because he could easily knock one over, but children 8+ would probably be fine for him. If you are ready for a young, enthusiastic, happy dog, please give Bernie your consideration. He is an absolute gem!
Bernie is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, negative for all tickborne diseases, microchipped and on prevention for fleas, ticks and heartworm. If Bernie sounds like your next family member, please complete an adoption application today! Bernie requires a committed adopter who is willing to devote 1 - 2 hours of mental and physical stimulation per day. Proof of heartworm purchase for any current or past pet is required to adopt.
NOTE: All of our dogs live in foster homes with volunteers; we need an approved application on file to set up a meet with a dog you might have an interest in. Please visit our website for more information on our adoption process, our adoption fees and a link to our adoption application. We pride ourselves on matches that work for both the dog and your family. MASR is here for your support, advice and safety net for our dogs for the remainder of their lives. www.MidwestAustralianShepherdRescue.org
