Weighing only 9 pounds dripping wet, this little Chihuahua boy is named Hermey and he’s just arrived from Texas to NJ to find a forever home. He is only a year old. Hermey is a timid pup who will need a patient family. He is great with other dogs but he will chase cats. In fact Hermey will only be adopted into a home with another calm canine companion. Hermey has had no exposure to children and because of his timid nature we feel that he should not be in a home with kids. Hermey is definitely affectionate although he is afraid of getting grabbed - he loves getting pets and belly rubs though. I am happy to announce that on March 10, 2024, I gave birth to four healthy puppies, all of which have since found their forever homes. I’m currently residing with multiple dogs, however, I do get a little jealous when other dogs approach my human. This sweet 11-year-old senior ended up in a Texas shelter, hoping to find someone to spend her golden days with! NorthStar stepped in and pulled her to safety and she is now in a wonderful foster home. Sake currently lives with 3 crazy cats in her foster home in TX and has no issue when the kitten tries to steal her food or they play around her. Personality wise, Sake is just like having a little doll. She loves her donut bed and just sleeps there most of the day and then will walk and sit somewhere else. She loves rolling in the grass but has to be carried out cause we have steps. Once we carry her outside, she immediately does her business. She just ignores everyone and doesn’t mind when others come close to her. She hasn’t made a noise since being here. Sake's legs and feet didn’t form correctly at birth so she moves differently and sometimes needs help getting around on slick surfaces. She also has no teeth although that hasn't interfered with her eating wet food! She has chronic dry eye for which she will be on an ointment the rest of her life. As you can see in her photos, Sake is very underweight, practically skeletal, but she is slowly gaining weight in foster as she eats 3 healthy meals a day. NorthStar will be making sure Sake gets the medical attention she needs in order to bring her back to a better state of health. She will then be making her way to NJ to find a wonderful retirement home. Little Mavis was whisked to safety by NorthStar on her final day at a Texas kill shelter! She is now in a loving foster home where she gobbled up her first good meal in a long time. Mavis is 14 years old and weighs about 8 pounds. She will be making her way to NJ to find a forever home. Fat Albert is about 1 year old and weighs 22 lbs. We didn't name him so we are hoping his furever family adopts him and gives him a new family and also a new name. His foster family calls him "Albie". Albie is actually a compact bundle of joy with an adorable underbite that gives him a perpetually endearing expression. This sweetheart has such a happy disposition! He is almost crate-trained; though he prefers a bit of coaxing and treats to get inside but once he's settled, he's as cozy as can be. At bedtime, he's a pro at making his bed and curls up happily for a good night's sleep. He's almost house-trained, with a few days between accidents thanks to regular potty breaks. He absolutely adores playing with his favorite toys or a liberating game of fetch. You'll often find him bounding after his favorite ball with infectious enthusiasm (check out his video). He's a big fan of walks, exploring the world every chance he gets. He's mastered the art of sitting on command and is a champ at car rides — always eager for the next road trip! While he can be a bit mouthy, he's a quick learner and just needs some guidance in obedience training. Despite being cautious around new people, once he warms up, his happiness shines through, and he'll be your best buddy. He can be reactive when he sees other dogs on walks, but he's improving with positive reinforcement. Albie sheds minimally, making him a low-maintenance companion in the grooming department. Allergic to cats but always dreamed of adopting one? Here is your perfect feral street cat in a dog’s body! Moe is a middle aged chi mix who originally came from a hoarding situation where he was clearly never ever touched. Probably even by his owner. He’s been in a great foster for a while and has made tremendous progress, but he needs someone who will accept him for who he is, and will probably never be the type of dog who will run over asking to be picked up and cuddled or greeting strangers at the door happily. Well, maybe 10 years from now when he’s blind, deaf, and arthritic he won’t mind being held and cuddled, but he’s a long way off from that. He thrives on routine and following his “pack” of doggie friends around. He actually seems to prefer the man of the house and will finally lay by him and allow some petting, but is still terrified of being leashed and most handling. He runs around happily wagging his tail, playing with the other dogs and loves his life as long as his limits are respected and is hoping to find a permanent pack where the dogs outnumber the humans in the household and he won’t be under pressure to conform to societal norms of how a dog should act. Athena is a shy but sweet little 3 year old chi/doxie/terrier type mix, full grown at 20lbs, with soulful brown eyes and a pensive worried expression. Her story is an increasingly common one these days… rescued as a scared puppy on the streets of Puerto Rico and flown to a rescue in NJ where she was quickly adopted with a hefty adoption fee as a desirable small breed puppy. Fast forward 3 years when her owner was moving out of the country without her… she is now a skittish and unsocialized adult, and the rescue ghosted and refused to take her back (as this particular rescue is well known to do) and she had nowhere to go besides NJ's already overburdened shelter system. Like most “Satos”, as mixed breed street dogs from PR are known as, she’s a shy skittish girl who gets overwhelmed by new people, noises, and unfamiliar situation and her instinct is flight not fight. She has never been aggressive, just nervous, and takes comfort in the presence of other dogs. Once she’s comfortable she’s a cuddly playful lovable loyal little girl and she’s looking for a low key household where she can feel safe. She was used to wee wee pads as well as going outside, likes walks in quieter areas but is mostly a homebody who likes the safety of her familiar environment. Thor-tin is an 11 year old Pomeranian mix who weighs about 21 lbs. He is completely up to date on vaccines and prevention as well as neutered. Thor is great with kids and anyone and everyone. He's also good with cats and most dogs but he doesn't like larger dogs around his face. His foster parents pet sit so Thor has been around 100 lb. dogs - he does well as long as they are not in his face. Even then, all he does is growl and walk away. Thor is potty trained and crate trained - he has the whole run of the house but sometimes we crate him if necessary. He can walk on a leash but can pull a little. He's even good for the groomer! Thor's family is going through a divorce and the husband is not reliable while the wife will be taking care of their autistic son.
