Story
Meet Chip (brown) and Mouse (black)!!!  These two wonderful boys are being re-homed because their owners can no longer care for them.  These 2 boys are 3 years old and have lived together their entire lives and depend on each other so they MUST be adopted together.  NOTE:  Chip and Mouse are NOT NorthStar Pet Rescue dogs.  NorthStar is helping to network them for a suitable home.  NorthStar does not guarantee the accuracy of this listing and applications will be sent to the owner to respond to.  Mouse is 3 years old, weighs 24 lbs, and has black and white fur. Chip is 3 years old, weighs 14 lbs, and has light brown fur. As a puppy Mouse was found in a kennel with his siblings in a neglectful hoarding situation. He had never been allowed outside, leading to him having severe anxiety and fearfulness of loud noises and of going outside. He currently only leaves the house for vet appts and goes potty inside on pads. He also has some minor allergy/skin issues that are treated as needed. Aside from these issues, Mouse is an absolutely adorable, sweet, playful, hilarious dog who really loves to play and have little zoomies in the house. He also loves to cuddle and receive lots of belly rubs. We also have never heard him bark once - he will sometimes let out a little cry when you get home after a long day. Despite his anxiety about going outside he's made sooo much progress since we first got him and is a totally different, much happier dog. He's especially so much happier since getting his brother Chip who he depends on for comfort and guidance.    Chip is a really great, affectionate, easy to please dog who's only issue is some reactiveness/barking with strangers and other dogs. He doesn't have any anxiety or issues with going outside he can be taken out and walked as normal, just wouldn't recommend dog parks. He loves going on long walks and being outside, however he's not the type of dog you can take to a park and just relax with he prefers to be walking and moving. Once he's inside, he's very calm and chill and just happy to be at Mouse's side and giving us all lots of kisses.    It's really important that they're adopted together because this transition will be hard for both of them, but especially for Mouse and we think he'll struggle to adjust a lot more without Chip. They really love each other a lot and are nearly attached at the hip most times. We wouldn't recommend a home with cats and would suggest a home with older kids if any. Chip would be happy to play and run around with them, but Mouse definitely would require kids who can respect his boundaries and be gentle with him. We think they would do best with an experienced, patient, loving, and supportive owner who lives in a quiet home and neighborhood, and has a fenced in secure yard. They will both need further training and support, Mouse for his anxiety and Chip for his reactivity. We think Mouse would eventually be okay with going outside in a yard, it's just been harder for us to try because their owner lives in an apartment in a busy neighborhood. But we truly think they can both thrive in the right home. They're such good boys and just really sweet, gentle, loving, silly, and affectionate dogs who we know will fill someone's home with so much more joy, love, and laughter as they have ours.     Both dogs are neutered, microchipped, house trained, crate trained, and up to date on vaccines. If you are interested in taking this duo into your home, please submit an adoption application to www.northstarpets.org and ask for XP CHIP & MOUSE - BONDED PAIR!November 3, 2024, 7:59 pm

OMG HOW IS THIS DOG STILL AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION???? A little Chihuahua with a nubbin of a tail sat in a Texas shelter up until she was about to give birth. NorthStar heard about Triscuit's situation - they whisked her out of the shelter & had her flown to NJ to a wonderful maternity foster! This little gal is about 2 years old, weighs under 10 pounds. On 10/3/2024, Triscuit gave birth to 5 beautiful babies - 4 girls and one boy - known as "The Cracker Crew" because they are named after different types of crackers! Unfortunately, Triscuit also tested positive for heartworm. She has officially weaned her puppies and is available for adoption. She will begin her heartworm treatment at NorthStar's veterinarian but can be adopted out during treatment.  If ever a sweet little mama deserved a happy ending, it's Triscuit! Triscuit's foster mom tells us this girl gets along fine with both dogs and cats. She is sweet but timid, seems to be mostly housetrained and is fine in a crate. She will need a little work on her leash skills though. If you'd like to meet Triscuit in the hopes of bringing her into your family, please complete an adoption application at www.northstarpets.org and be sure to ask for TRISCUIT TX! Her adoption fee is $425 after she has been spayed.January 6, 2025, 2:51 pm

Story
Oodle TX is a sweet old man who is close to 11 years old and weighs under 14 pounds. He is very affectionate and is quite assertive about letting you know that you need to pet him. He likes his head rubbed a lot and when I rub his back he turns around so I can scratch his butt - if I stop he will paw at me! If you are looking for a sweet, well-behaved, fun-loving boy then Oodle just might be your guy. When Oodle came to NJ he was a little underweight. He is now thriving at 17 lbs and is as handsome as ever!   Oodle is house trained, crate trained, super smart, a great eater and loves to be with his people. He knows simple commands like sit & stay. He is a pleasure to walk as long as no other dogs are around as he tends to be a bit leash reactive. Oodle LOVES to play fetch but also enjoys his daily naps. He’s an easy-going boy with a lot of personality. He is great company and will stay close to your side. His sweet temperament makes him extremely lovable! He is currently being fostered in a home with no pets or kids but was originally fostered in TX with other dogs and cats. Oodle has some arthritis in his back right leg and takes a daily anti-inflammatory medication which has proven to be a big help.   2 fun facts about Oodle: - 1 - Windshield wipers makes him bark.  And 2 - Because he is missing a few front teeth, his tongue tends to hang out especially while he’s sleeping ~ so cute!   If you are interested in meeting Oodle, please complete an adoption application and be sure to ask for Oodle TX. His adoption fee is $250.  February 15, 2025, 9:43 am

Story
Glynis is a lovely lady who's about 7 years old.  She's excited and friendly when meeting new people and dogs both large and small.  She recently had a sleepover party at a house with a cat and did very well.  Glynis is super affectionate and her happy place is wherever you are, preferably curled up next to you or sitting in your lap.  At only 12 pounds, she's the perfect size for a lap dog!  Glynis is house trained, leash trained and prefers short walks over longer ones.  She is a spunky, free spirit so she prefers to spend her evenings and alone time outside of a crate.  All in all, Glynis is a low drama sweetheart! Like many dogs from Texas, Glynis has tested positive for heartworm but she has begun treatment and is making great progress!  She has luxated patellas on her front knees, but it does not affect her ability to go up or down stairs and she shows no discomfort. She does have some calcium deposits on her right cornea which are no problem at this point. If you're interested in meeting Glynis, please complete an adoption application at www.northstarpets.org and be sure to ask for her by name - GLYNIS TX!  March 5, 2025, 11:31 am

Story
Rizzo came into a Texas animal shelter in a very neglected state. She was picked up as a stray in early December during a rainstorm. Her kennel tech said she was soaked to the skin, freezing cold and emaciated. Rizzo left the shelter, again in a rainstorm, but protected as she headed off to become part of the NorthStar family. There is no doubt that Rizzo was loved at some point in her life. This tiny gal loves to be held. She is generous with her kisses and snuggles. She has no problem being handled by people she doesn’t know but due to her tiny size, she should not be placed in a home where the children are under 12 years old. And Rizzo is dog friendly - she likes small dogs but isn't fond of large ones. She is crate trained and house trained. Her foster mom says that Rizzo is one of the easiest fosters she's ever had as a houseguest! Rizzo has adjusted quickly to life in her foster home. She sleeps on the floor in her foster mom's bedroom. Or occasionally, foster mom will let her sleep on the bed. She is your typical Chihuahua - she snuggles under the covers and doesn’t move all night.  Rizzo weighed less than 5 pounds when she was rescued but the vet said she should weigh 7-8 pounds. She has a cataract in the right eye but she can still see shadows - a cataract is beginning to form in her left eye but currently her sight is good. She has missing some teeth and needs a dental cleaning. We will get that done, along with being spayed, before she makes her way to NJ. We are focused on kidney support for now - she eats a prescription canned food that should resolve the issue. Once her medical issues have been addressed, Rizzo will travel from TX to NJ so she can find the perfect forever home! We believe that Rizzo is about 12 years old. If you are interested in adopting tiny Rizzo, please fill out an adoption application at http://www.northstarpets.org and ask for her by name - RIZZO TX. The adoption fee for this sweet gal is $250.  March 13, 2025, 2:54 pm

Story
Katona arrived at a shelter in Texas as a public drop off on 1/12/2025. She was on "hold"  for 4 weeks because the shelter thought she had an owner coming for her. Turns out there was no owner and poor Katona sat there all that time needlessly. NorthStar pulled her out of the shelter on 2/6. Katona is house trained and crate trained. While she looks like a Chihuahua mix, there seems to be some gazelle mixed in as she can jump over the baby gates in foster mom's home when she really wants to. She is dog friendly (all sizes) and good with cats (she is slightly afraid of them so keeps her distance).  Katona's favorite pastime is sitting at the window and watching passersby. She will bark at them occasionally. She has a low gravely bark  - not the normal high pitched Chi bark. She enjoys being held and will roll over for tummy rubs. She also snores but it’s a cute snore.   Katona is 7 years old and weighs 14 pounds. In addition to being dog friendly (all sizes), she has met her foster mom’s 5-year-old granddaughter and behaved perfectly. Also, Katona loves to go for walks and is a dream on a leash. And she rides well in the car.  If you're looking for a happy little Chihuahua, please consider checking out sweet Katona. Just fill out an application at Home - Northstar Pet Rescue and ask for her by name - KATONA TX! March 13, 2025, 2:54 pm

Story
Allergic to cats but always dreamed of adopting one? Here is your perfect feral street cat in a dog’s body! Moe is a middle aged chi mix who originally came from a hoarding situation where he was clearly never ever touched. Probably even by his owner. He’s been in a great foster for a while and has made tremendous progress, but he needs someone who will accept him for who he is, and will probably never be the type of dog who will run over asking to be picked up and cuddled or greeting strangers at the door happily. Well, maybe 10 years from now when he’s blind, deaf, and arthritic he won’t mind being held and cuddled, but he’s a long way off from that. He thrives on routine and following his “pack” of doggie friends around. He actually seems to prefer the man of the house and will finally lay by him and allow some petting, but is still terrified of being leashed and most handling. He runs around happily wagging his tail, playing with the other dogs and loves his life as long as his limits are respected and is hoping to find a permanent pack where the dogs outnumber the humans in the household and he won’t be under pressure to conform to societal norms of how a dog should act. If you too would rather be surrounded by dogs than people, and don’t mind having another little furry member following you around at snack time and watching the world go by perched on your couch, email njwoof@cs.com to meet Moe in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. Story
The volume of discarded seniors entering NJ’s shelter system is sad and alarming. Pippy is one of our newest arrival. She was curled up in a sad scared cranky ball in the back of her kennel at our local Animal Control facility surrounded by large barking dogs. She’s severely overweight at 18lbs when she should be more like 12, and she gets out of breath easily with even short walks. She was blind in one eye which was painful and uncomfortable due to severe untreated, chronic dry eye as well as glaucoma, so we made the decision with our vet that removal would be the best option to help her feel better. She’s healing nicely and warming up, she’s a chihuahua so can be snarky with strangers and doesn’t like to be bothered when she’s comfy in her bed, but getting a bit happier each day. And she only has bottom teeth remaining after her dental so isn’t particularly scary. Getting gummed to death by an obese one-eyed pirate 🏴‍☠️ Chihuahua isn’t much of a threat. She’s fine with other mellow little dogs and definitely knows her own chihuahua kind, a funny but lovable little personality if you understand chi culture and customs. She’s at least 10 years old and overall in pretty good health now that her untreated eye and dental situation have been taken care of and she’s already lost 2lbs on her diet! Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Pippy in Northern NJ. Pippy is just the latest in a long line of local seniors we have taken in suffering from chronic painful medical issues that need immediate medical attention to give them a better quality of life. Please consider a donation so we can continue to step up week after week for these little ones in need in our local shelters. Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. NORM! 🍻 Everyone lights up seeing this little guy enter the room. He’s a sweet senior longhair chi with an outgoing lovable personality. We think he’s about 10-12 years old with a little bit of an old man cough due to a sensitive trachea but otherwise in pretty good shape and getting a dental today. He’s ok with most other chill tiny dogs and a sweet little lapdog. A little chunky at almost 10lbs but he’s a tiny guy sure to charm any senior chi lover. Story
It’s chonky chihuahua season apparently! And they keep coming in 2 at a time 🤯 Our newest mother/son bonded duo are Olga and Mr. Oreo. Their latest caretaker had nowhere to live with them and showed up at a local shelter in urgent need of a place for them to go. They are shy and tremble at first but very sweet and definitely look to each other for comfort. Mommy Olga is 10 year old and severely overweight at 18lbs when she should be more like 10-12! Baby Oreo is 8 years old and also needs a diet, he’s 14 lbs right now but should probably be 10 or less. They have lived with cats, seem ok with other gentle little dogs, and don’t seem to have any of the stereotypical chihuahua snark from what we have seen so far. They might be part min pin from what we were told, and Oreo has a short tail but they look more chihuahua to us. After being shuffled around through a couple of homes lately they deserve a stable home together for the second half of their lives. Story
Hello, Possum's potential new furever family. Do you love a dog that's always happy go lucky, (tail wagging goodness always)? Do you dream of a soft 'kitty', warm 'kitty', little ball of fur - but in doggie form?   Are you looking for a calm, easy, small pooch to sleep at the foot of your bed, next to you on the couch, or at your feet in the office while you work? At just 11 lbs Possum is the perfect little companion.   Despite being through some absolutely horrible circumstances... (hit by car and badly broken leg, severe respiratory infection leading to bronchitis, a heart murmur, and ending up on the 'last call list' in Texas)... Possum is always friendly, happy and will greet you with a tail wag. And as the days are sunnier and warmer, this gal has enjoyed spending more time outside enjoying the sunshine. We are looking for a home for Possum that has no stairs, is not an apartment, no big boisterous dogs or young rowdy kids as she is still fragile as she heals.   Possum enjoys the company of other dogs her size, likes to bark at the neighborhood stray cats, plays with squeaky/crinkly toys, and most of all loves a good feed - only the best quality Hills small bites and homecooked lean chicken breast will do. Possum is currently re-learning potty training (after major leg surgery). She is beginning to use the doggie door but may have accidents if left alone inside for more than a few hours. However, she is improving daily and if you can commit to loving her, being patient with her, and continuing her physiotherapy to get her leg strong and healthy, the rewards she will bring you are immense!   If you want to bring into your life a little dog who really needs your love and spoiling, please consider Possum. If you would like to meet her, please fill out an adoption application to adopt this little nugget at www.northstarpets.org and ask for POSSUM TX.  March 14, 2025, 1:52 pm
