Meet unforgettable Tess! She's a lively, high-spirited American Pit Bull that arriveed as a stray at the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 1/29. Yes, that makes 4 1/2 months that she's been a shelter resident.. She has watched other dogs rescued, adopted or reclaimed and yet as wonderful as she is, she remains. Tess weighs about 50 pounds, is approx 2 years old and is spayed. She was absolutely delighted when I took her from her kennel to the yard. She walks ok on a leash but was anxious to get out so did pull. She pottied in the yard. She has a habit of doing zoomies in the yard--back and forth, back and forth--just thrilled to be stretching her legs and running. She has spunk, energy, a playful nature, and you could say she is an on-the-go kind of gal. The warmth of the summer Texas afternoon caused her to slow down and begin the investigation process of checking out all the smells, looking out the gate and placing her paws on the ledge in order to see what was going on in the outside world. She sits for treats and takes them politely. Tess needs an active family or person that will give her daily playtime, exercise and enrichment. She is more than willing to learn some commands and even to take obedience classes. She's sure she would be at the top of her class!

Meet Charlotte, a terrier Pit Bull mix brought to the Mesquite Animal Shelter along with a 6 month male pup who may be her son. They are kenneled together. She weighs 44 pounds and is about one year of age. Charlotte is well mannered, does not jump on you, is calm and gentle and has a chill personality. She sits for treats and takes them politely. She is friendly and A-ok with receiving petting and loving attention. She walks quite nicely on a leash. She did her business in the yard, so may be house trained. She spent a fair amount of time exploring the yard during the photo shoot, but was happy to interact with and get acquainted with me. She seems to have been well cared for as she has a sleek, beautiful, shiny coat.

In her short life, it looks like Eva has probably been overbred. She would now like to go to a home that would cherish HER because of her sterling personality. Eva is a two-year-old black and white terrier pit mix that arrived at the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 5/21. She weighs 56 pounds. I had her out on a hot day and she spent most the time by the door. She wants to be mostly an inside dog. She will need a tall secure fence as she did make an attempt to escape. She does sit for treats and takes them gently. Eva is well mannered. She occasionally jumps on you but gets down when asked to do so. She wants human interaction and stays close. She is sweet, friendly, and very observant. She seems to be happy as her tail wagged a lot. She came to me when I called her. She walked OK on a leash. She did her business when she got out into the yard. She wagged her tail meeting smaller dogs but barked at one larger dog. We always suggest if you have another dog to ask the shelter for a dog test. This is one sweet girl and deserves a break. I'm hoping this first picture will tug at your heart and you will come in and meet her. Eva would do well with children. As loving as she is, I think she would be very protective of them. And like I said, she does not like the hot weather and needs to be a mostly inside dog.

He pottied in the shelter yard and he walks nicely on a leash. He has a scar on his nose. Perry is active and alert and is more than happy to receive loving attention. He has a moderate activity level. He has a zest for living and is hoping for a person or family who wants a happy and lovable boy to live inside with them and share life together. If you spent any amount of time with him, he would soon put a smile on your face!

This shy youngster I have named Fiona. She is a Lab/Retriever mix that arrived at the Mesquite Animal Shelter as a stray on 6/21. She is approximately 6 months old and weighs 26 pounds. She tugged at my heartstrings as I interacted with her and observed her timid and uneasy behavior as well as her too-thin frame with her ribs showing. She does walk on a leash but somewhat hesitantly. She is a bit timid but is lively and active. She does not have the over-the-top energy level that some of our puppies have. She has a very sweet nature and will receive loving attention. She was not interested in toys or balls, but found the soft cushy doggy bed in the room and settled in... so much more comfortable than the floor in her kennel.

Meet Gypsy, an American Staffordshire Terrier mix that arrived as a stray at the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 6/24. She weighs 56 pounds and is approximately 1 1/2 years old. She has a shiny coat and stunning eyes and appears to have been well cared for. Yet her owner has not come to reclaim her, sad to say. She walks quite nicely on a leash. She has a chill personality and a low-key energy level. She spent a fair amount of time checking out all the nooks and crannies in the room in which her eval was done. She walks beautifully on a leash. Gypsy does jump on you occasionally and that behavior will need to be corrected. She enjoyed playing with some squeaky toys. Gypsy likes treats and will take them politely. She does not seem to know any commands. She is a friendly girl with a sweet nature who would like nothing better than to leave the shelter life behind. Her desire is to find a person or family who would allow her to live inside and be an important and integral part of the family circle.

Hi everyone! My name is Jet because I’m super fast and jet black as you can see. I love all people and dogs, even the ones who bark too much and are cranky. Everyone is my friend on walks at the dog park and daycare which is heaven!!! Since my foster Dad found me off the highway when I was skinny & limping he has done everything he can to help me even though he is a cat dad and never had a dog. He even took me to one on one training so we both could learn what to do. We've both come so far and we're both so well behaved now haha. I was neutered in early January and it's helped me calm down lots. From day one belly rubs and hugs have been my thing. I can't get enough and go bonkers when my foster gets home or picks me up at daycare. I'm super sweet and will give kisses and actually smile and hug you or hold hands. I've learned to sleep next to him as well and it's really nice to snuggle. I'm pretty much house trained and my foster didn't even know what he was doing, but he put out pee pads for me and I learned to go on those and then to hold it and go to the patio door or wake him up so I can go pee outside. If I don't wake him I used the pee pads and he is so proud of me. He has let me run around the whole backyard and depending on the weather has the AC or heat on in the shed so I can go in there when I want and he gave me a bed and food and water and many things to chew. I’ll chew on things if they’re left out but in the six months I've lived here now it's really only the toys he gives me and old shoes he lets me chew up. I really want a brother or sister to play with and humans that are dog people as I'm super super sociable. Sometimes my hip still hurts me so I need someone who will give me rest days as well as daycare! The only thing I need to complete my perfect life is a forever home.
