HI! I'm Zinnia, I'm from a local shelter. From the foster: Zinnia is very smart and highly food motivated. She likes to sit on the deck. She likes her people to stay in the room where she can keep an eye on them. Zinnia does bark and her bark is rather loud for her size. She prefers women and seems like she'd do best in a home with very stable routines that will help ease her anxiety. Hello! Throughout my veterinary care at Secondhand Hounds, it was discovered I have heart issues. A cardiologist performed an echocardiogram and diagnosed me with aortic valve stenosis and patent ductus arteriosus. I had a Amplatz Canine Duct Occluder procedure completed at the University of Minnesota to help with my heart conditions. I will have a 3 month recheck at the U of M. At that appointment, it will be decided if I need an additional heart procedure. If I am adopted prior to this medical care, SHH will cover my 3 month recheck exam, second heart surgery (if deemed necessary) and my spay surgery at the SHH Vet Center (this will not occur until I am cleared).

Story
Hi, I'm Tiny Batman and I'm from Alabama! From his foster - Tiny Batman is a very sweet, high energy guy. He is very puppy-like and wants to cuddle with and be loved by his humans. He is good with other dogs and spends hours playing with my dog, inside and out in my fenced yard. He also does well in his crate at night, never makes a sound. He does have a fair amount of quirks, however, that a potential adopter needs to be aware of. He has some separation anxiety (with barking), but does do better when my resident dog is in the same room. Tiny Batman also exhibits a lot of "stranger danger" and will bark for several minutes or more when anyone comes into my home (even if he knows them). Because of his barking and anxiety, a quieter house with not a lot of people coming and going (and no shared walls) would be best. Tiny Batman has also developed some resource guarding issues that I am working with him on, and has nipped/bitten on a handful of occasions. Because of this, a home with no children or dog savvy older children is preferred. He is 95% potty trained, but this seems to be improving the longer he is with me! Tiny Batman would love a home environment that is relatively calm and would really like an active dog sibling to play with and help him with his anxiety. In exchange, he will provide you with a loving companion who will be your best friend forever!

My name is Rose. I am from Minnesota. From her foster: Rose is very loving and just looking for someone to bond with! She is a snuggle buddy par excellence. She's generally quiet but will let you know if something's up outside. Good with dogs, though she can try to dominate smaller dogs, and pays no heed to my cat. Don't know how she is with kids because there are none here, but I don't see any reason she wouldn't be ok with them. Not crate trained but does fine sleeping in her own bed in her human's room. She would love to snuggle under the covers with you but if that's not cool, she is easily directed back to her own bed. I've only fostered her a short time but she is house trained when kept to a schedule. She is adventurous and likes to move along rapidly, so not a sedate walker on the leash. She walks companionably with my little pack and ignores the other dogs she sees out walking. For 8 years old, she is very lively, very athletic, seems much younger! She really is looking for love and will bond very quickly with you and be your constant companion. She is afraid of loud noises and fireworks. She looks like a classic "chiweenie", chihuahua/doxie mix but who knows what her true DNA is? Her heart is 100% gold. From the Vet: Rose was diagnosed with IVDD (intervertebral disc disease) and is currently on a trial of pain medications to help her be more comfortable. This is typically an age-related degenerative condition, but generally with rest and medical management with pain meds or joint supplements, most dogs still go on to live full lives! Her future home may want to have certain comfort aids such as ramps to get in car, bed, couch etc. a no pull harness rather than collar alone, or a raised food bowl. Rose should be monitored for further signs of degenerative pain as she ages and her owner should consult a primary care vet when needed to ensure her golden years are full of comfort and love!

Story
Little Bit, affectionately known to his friends and foster family as "Spleen, embodies the charm and warmth of the South. Originally found wandering the streets of Alabama, this sweet little chihuahua has found himself right at home in his current foster environment, where he's been winning hearts for about a month now. Spleen is a small dog with a big heart. He has been polite with his foster brother (large dog) and several cats that he's met during outings with friends. His gentle demeanor has earned him praise from all who meet him. On the weekends you can find him enjoying social situations such as dog-friendly patio restaurants and breweries. The little man also can strut his stuff on a leash and enjoys leisurely walks in the summer sun. In his foster home, Spleen adores snuggling under blankets and being close to his human companions. He has a penchant for car rides and is discovering the delight of playing with toys, showcasing his youthful spirit. His day to day routine includes regular potty breaks and medication every 8 hours, lovingly administered with a dab of his favorite peanut butter-a treat he eagerly anticipates. As a result, he will need a human who is close to home to keep him on schedule with his meds. Please read more from the vet below about his medical needs, spoiler alert: he's been doing great on regular medication and seems much more cheerful and zesty. He truly is a wonderful companion who is ready to bring joy and love to a new home. If you're looking for a loyal and loving addition to your family, consider adopting Spleen. He's a great little guy ready to share his Southern charm and affection with his forever family. From the Vet: Little Bit was seen at our Vet Center for a few seizure episodes. He is currently managing these episodes on three times daily As long as you are comfortable watching out for this Little Bit will be an amazing addition to any family!

Story
Hi, my name is Marcy. I'm from Arkansas! From her foster: This is Marcy! Marcy is a sweet older dog who's 3 favorite hobbies are asking for belly rubs, lounging, and going on walks. Potty trained: Completely! Crate trained: Yes. She needs a push and treat to go in, but once she's in she is good. When we leave she will quietly whine (not too loud for shared walls at all) for a bit but settles in pretty quickly. She sleeps in her crate at night and is quiet all night. Dogs: We have 45 lb resident dog and they coexist peacefully 99% of the time. Our dog has tried to play with Marcy and Marcy gets a little scared and defensive but a stern "no stops them both without issue. Walks: Loves them! She can keep up on our 3 mile walks but doesn't need that long. Her forever family should try to incorporate daily walks though as she gets so excited for them and really enjoys them. She doesn't pull too much on the leash (we use a harness). She likes to smell along the way and will occasionally go after a squirrel or bunny! Demeanor: She is a little timid/shy, but once she knows you she's in love with you and warms up pretty quickly. She can get startled by loud noises but gets over it fast. When we are inside she just lays around and naps on and off when she's not nicely asking for pets. She is a very chill dog. She'll come up to us and roll over for a belly rub often. She also loves to lay by us on the couch in the evenings. Agility: She looks old because of her gray face, but the only physical limitation that we've seen is not being able to get up on the couch by herself. She'll put her front legs on and then need help with her back legs. Oddly enough, she is able to jump into the trunk of my SUV which is much higher than the couch. So maybe she's just lazy inside :). Check out Marcy's story highlight on Instagram at @ejsrescuepups for more pictures and videos!

Rosa has lived with 2 other chihuahua mixes and 2 cats in my mother in laws home for 7+ years. Rosa is nervous and barks when new guests visit, but can be calmed quickly with positive reinforcement. She likes attention and loves to be held, snuggled, and carried along on adventures. She has been good with our kids and visiting with our animals the last few weeks. Rosa needs to be re-homed as her owner has entered a nursing home and can no longer care for her. She has lost her person and needs someone to help give her the loving home she deserves.

Story
Hey there, I'm Meri, and I've got a lot of love to give! Sure, I might have a few challenges with my front paws, but let me tell you, that doesn't stop me from living my best life. Food? Oh, I'm all about it! But don't worry, my foster mom keeps an eye on me so I don't overdo it. I'm quite the gourmet—I'll munch on fruits, veggies, and I go crazy for scrambled eggs. And you know what? I'm all about staying fit too. I love going for walks, playing with toys, and tearing around outside with my furry roommates. Catching some rays in the sun? Yep, that's my jam too. I'm not just a one-species kinda friend. Cats, dogs, chickens, ducks—you name it, I get along with them. Humans? Absolutely! Whether they live here or just popping by for a visit, I'm always up for making new friends. Oh, and did I mention I'm potty trained? Yep, no accidents here. Car rides? Bring 'em on! Although, let's be real, I'm not quite big enough to take the wheel myself. When it's time to wind down, I'm all about some quality cuddle time. But I also appreciate having my own space to snooze. A cozy bed or a kennel? Either works for me, whatever makes you feel comfy. And hey, if you catch me talking in my sleep, it's just because I'm reliving all the fun I had that day. I'm a smart cookie too—I know my basic commands and I'm always eager to learn more. It might take me a bit to warm up to new people, but once I know I'm safe, I'm all in. Oh, and one more thing—I'm not really into wearing clothes or blankets. I'm naturally cozy warm, thank you very much. But you know what I do love? Being rocked and sung to by my foster mom. It's the best! So, what do you say? If you're looking for a furry friend who'll bring you love and companionship every single day, I'm your girl. Let's make some memories together! ##2017803##

Story
Tinkerbell loves playing outside, playing inside and going on walks. She’s an affectionate, 11-pound chihuahua/terrier mix with pretty light brown eyes who wants to stand or sit right next to her people and give them an occasional lick. She likes to run the show with the two other dogs in the house, as she’s the most assertive of the three. She’s obedient and when you tell her to stop doing something, she listens well. She likes eating and has been known to eat other dogs’ food, too, if you let her. Tinkerbell loves other dogs but would also be fine alone. Occasionally barks at people and dogs she sees while outside but not excessively. She just wants to be your pal! Still working on potty training but doing well on a schedule. Tinkerbell was heartworm postitive and has completed her treatment but will need to be checked to make sure that she is healed. Because of the shots she received she did also develope an abcess that we are working on treating. Because of these 2 items she will need to go foster to adopt. But do not let these issues scare you off she will be healthy in no time! ##2037694##

Hi I'm Miley.  I am proud to say my  foster mom tells me how beautiful I am almost every day. She says I'm one of a kind. I'm m not quite sure what that means but I don't find the need to bark much or to be sassy. I'm a lover not a fighter. Belly rubs and snuggles are my favorite! I do great on a potty schedule outside and will use the puppy pad by the door once and a while. I  pick up things pretty quickly and notice everything around me. My mom says I'm smart.   I know the best place to sleep is with my foster parents.  I don't like my kennel much and my spicey side comes out. My mom says I need to stay calm so I don't have to sleep in there.  Lucky me!  I wonder why they keep me calm? I think I heard them talking about me being heart worm positive. Apparently,   I only need to be calm during my treatment period  (How long is that? ) I heard them talking and they said something about me being your foster to adopt dog until my treatment is complete. That is awesome! Then we can live together right away. I don't want to wait  one more day to be with my forever family.  I haven't been out on walk yet since I need to be calm. That can come later.  I get along great with other dogs and fit right in. I know how to be social. I haven't met anyone I didn't like. There are no kids in my foster home but I do well with everyone I've met so far. So I'm guessing that I will like them too. I don't have any cats where I live either so getting along with them is a mystery.  If you love a one of a kind, affectionate, social chihuahua,  then I'm the girl for you! I am worth every effort!       If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please an Adoption Request Form. Story
This 5lb blonde little girl is your perfect match for patio hopping or a go anywhere soccer mom’s side kick. She is a confident little Dachshund mix that is great around dogs of all sizes, kids, and cats. She has been well socialized! While Dorit is well socialized she holds a special place in her heart for HER person; she would love to be spoiled rotten and given all the attention.  She sleeps great in a crate but now that her littermates have all been adopted she likes to sneak in her foster mom’s bed at night. If you sit down you’ll find her curled up in a ball on your lap in seconds. She is house-trained, crate-trained and uses a doggie door. If you want a little puppy that already knows how to dog she’s your girl. Her mom is 20lbs full grown and has short legs and a long body just like Dorit. Story
Meet Jericho! This young boy is the cutest pup with the longest legs and biggest ears his foster has ever seen!   Jericho is being fostered with other dogs - large and small - and he loves them all. He is great with kids, loves everyone he meets and is learning that cats are not for chasing. Since he is young, he will learn quick to be gentle and stay away from those pesky felines.  Jericho is crate trained and is working hard on his house training (he is a puppy after all).  Jericho would love a family that will help him use those big ears for listening - taking him to training classes and teaching him new things! He is a smart and active boy that will be a joy for any family!  From his foster mom: Jericho (we call him Batty because EARS) is the cutest, happiest little guy. He will make a great companion for anyone and I bet he would really like to do any type of dog sport. He is smart, super fast, energetic and very affectionate. He would love to be sitting in a lap or playing with someone all day. He does great in his crate and is working really hard on house training and doing super awesome. He also loves to keep busy with some puzzle toys or frozen enrichment toys! He is pretty leggy and his ears make him look bigger than he actually is - he is about 12lbs now at 4 months. I would estimate him to be in the 30-45lb range full grown! Typiclally pups where Jericho came from are a mix of 10+ different breeds - so we are unsure what this big eared dude really is - he is on the samller side. I wouldn't be surprised if a DNA test showed some shepherd or cattle dog in him though!  If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please submit an Adoption Request Form. This is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract. To learn more about The Rescue Crew adoption process and the care our foster animals receive, please visit our Adoption Process page on our official website.  Hi there! I’m Dewey, the sweetest pup you’ll ever meet! I absolutely love sitting on your lap, following you around the house and yard, and snuggling up in bed with you. I’m all about being close to my humans and sharing lots of love. I came from a family on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation after a tough encounter with another dog left me with some pretty bad bites on my back leg. But don’t worry—I’m all healed up now and ready to start my next adventure! As a typical Chihuahua, I’m super sweet but can show a bit of my spicy side too. I get along well with female dogs, but I like to be the boss around other males. I might be okay with male dogs my size, but I’ve got a thing about putting larger male dogs in their place. I once faced off with a dog 90 pounds heavier than me and made sure he knew who was in charge! I also have a similar attitude towards two-legged male creatures. I love the ladies, but I have no problem showing the guys who's boss. Kids? I adore them! Chasing them around the yard and giving them wet kisses is the best. I also ride great in the car and make an excellent captain on the pontoon. On our way up to the cabin, I was a bit anxious, but by the trip home, I was just fine. I had no fear out on the lake, enjoying the views and soaking up the warm sun. I should mention, I’m probably not the best fit for an apartment or townhome. I can get quite vocal when left in my crate while you’re gone. I wouldn’t want to cause any eviction notices! But, I do much better if you leave me with a kong filled with frozen peanut butter—that’s one of my favorite treats. As for potty training, I’m pretty good when the weather is nice, but rain is a different story. Like many small dogs, I’m not a fan of getting wet, so I might try to sneak away to do my business inside. But, I’m usually right by your side, so you’ll probably catch on quickly if I’m up to something. If you think this adorable little nugget would be a perfect fit for your family, submit an application! I can’t wait to meet you and shower you with love.
