Despite my visual impairment, I navigate the world with grace and curiosity. My other senses are keen, and I rely on them to explore my surroundings. I even learned to use a doggie door before my friends who have good eyesite! I will be someone's loyal companion. I love cuddling up and listening to the sounds of the world outside. My blindness doesn’t hold me back; instead, I think it adds to my charm. I like basking in the sun, treats and lap time. I'd like a quiet home, a cozy spot by the window where I can feel the sun and hear the birds and a a soft bed. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and Minneapolis, MN areas twice a month. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual and we will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veteinarian ($35). You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Meet Camila. She was found as a stray in Texas. She is on the hunt for a new start in Minnesota. She enjoys the company of other dogs, but can be a bit selective at first. She likes to play with toys and even throws them for herself. She is a big lovebug and wants nothing more than to be with her people. She may need a little help with some guarding behavior and should be fed separately from other animals. She gets the cutest zoomies. She adores children and takes every opportunity to sit in their laps. Does Camila sound like the piece that has been missing in your life? Camila is from Texas. They arrive in Minnesota on 7/27 and will need to be picked up from the Ruff Start Rescue office in Princeton, MN between the hours of 9AM and 12PM. Please plan for their arrival accordingly as we cannot accommodate pickups outside of this time frame. One big thing you should know is they are heartworm positive - but please don’t let that scare you away from adopting them! After they undergo treatment for their condition they will be completely healthy again, and heartworm is not a contagious disease. Because they need treatment, they are available exclusively through Ruff Start’s Foster to Adopt (FTA) program. Click here to learn more about this program. They will get heartworm treatment at one of Ruff Start’s partner veterinary clinics in St. Cloud, so their foster will need to be comfortable getting them to and from the appointments. Treatment will consist of three injections: the first will be roughly 30 days after they enter rescue. Then, the second and third injections will happen 30 days after the first. When they are undergoing treatment, they should be on activity ‘restrictions’ which just means they should relax in their crate or cuddle with you. You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. This sweet girl is Lotus (aka Coco). She was surrendered into rescue by her previous owner. She recently weaned her puppies and is ready for a life of leisure in Minnesota. She is friendly with people and very sweet with the other dogs in her Texas foster home. She hasn't been around kids so it is unknown how she would do with them. She is already potty trained. She is crate trained, but she is not a fan of being in the crate when she can't see her people. She does whine when she is crated without her people nearby so she probably would not be a good fit for an apartment or townhome with shared walls. She currently sleeps in her crate in the foster's bedroom, but would be more than happy to cuddle in bed all night with her people if that were an option. I'm around 3 years old, that perfect age of out of the puppy destructive stage but still active and playful for those 'adventures' we can go on...together. I do great with people both tall and small and the other foster pups here. I'd make a great 'sibling' to both 2 or 4 legged beings. I'd also do great getting all your attention as your one and only. I come in at just 11 lbs. But that's a big 11 lbs of pure love, 11 lbs of snuggles, 11 lbs of a heartbeat at your feet (or on your lap!!). I'm both house and crate trained so that lets us get right to the fun stuff right away making me a pawsome addition to just about any family even a first time pet parent!
