Story
Max has been in our care for over a year. He was abandoned and found by a neighbor. They posted him online and couldn't locate an owner. He is fixed, although that's all I know of his vet history. He's a friendly and happy boy, although protective of his things. Whether it be food, treats, or toys. He's good with kids but can easily knock over toddlers. We're rehoming him because he has a bad habit of trying to play with our chickens. Although he doesn't mean to hurt them, he has killed several. Also, he got into one bad fight with our other done over a bone. Someone that has the time and/or energy to train him would be ideal. He is used to roaming our 10 acre property and not being contained, so either a similar situation, or a fenced yard and some training to stay home would make him happiest.

Story
Bug is one of three dogs who were abandoned on our property in the middle of the night. Because of that rough transition to this portion of his life, he is scared of most things and timid around most people. We are slowly getting to see his true personality. He does best when he can go as slow as he chooses and nothing is rushed. His safe space right now is his room and if things are rushed, he rushes back in. He is now comfortable walking to our play yard and loves to hang out with his mom Ruby (who is also available for adoption!) but still has a hard time if he is alone. Please allow us to give Bug time to learn and adjust at the pace he is comfortable with, more info coming soon.UPDATE: Bug has made a few new human friends but is a slow process. He is getting to know most of our staff and a few of our volunteers but he is still pretty shy around them. Anyone that is interested in adopting may have to come for a few visits in order to create a friendship before taking him home. He is ready to meet new doggy friends, we've noticed he really enjoys the company of a lady pup but has successfully played with a male as well! Baby bug needs a home willing to give him all the time he needs with no rushed experiences. He is a very sweet boy who really does deserve the world. Just one look into his soulful eyes is all it take, he a heart breaker for sure. Come down and give our Chunk Butt a try, we promise you'll love him too. UPDATE #2:Bug has made huge leaps! He is still nervous and a bit shy around strangers but he is very curious and tries his best to be brave. He does not shy away (as long as you remain calm and approachable) like he used to, he walks up to get some sniffs in. He loves treats so you will get bonus points if you have a snack for him. Bug has been introduced to a harness and has been on a few successful walks with staff. He is not quite ready for long adventures but we are getting closer every day! He does best if he goes on walks with his mom Ruby and can go for a tad bit longer without getting spooked by the environment. Feel free to call us at 360-533-1141 or email adopt@pawsgh.org if you would like to talk to our dog care specialist about Bug and his special needs in a home! Please apply to adopt at: http://www.pawsgh.org

Story
She is one of three dogs that got abandoned on our property. One of the dogs being her son, Chunk Butt Bug. Because of that rough transition to life, she is shy at first but will warm up to you if you're patient with her. She is not a fan of strangers approaching her so she will bark and make herself seem big and scary but she is the complete opposite of her first impression. What she really wants is someone to give her all the love and attention she deserves. All she needs is a few moments to go at her own pace. She wants to be a happy and friendly lil lady but has a hard time trusting right off the bat. Just a few sniffs and you're in! She makes friends very quickly and has accepted friendship from everyone she has met thus far. Ruby has adjusted very well with our routines here at PAWS and is now such a happy friendly girl! She has learned that new faces mean new friends, and new cuddle buddies. She loves to see our volunteers and she loves to go on walks with anyone willing to take a little adventure with her. She is still learning her leash manners so she does pull but that is a work in progress! Her favorite thing is zoomies in our play yard with a few go, go, go's for encouragement. She must have been a linebacker in her past because she gets going super fast and will sometimes use a human body to break and slow herself down. Be prepared to brace yourself because she will tackle anyone in her way when those zoomies come out! Her other favorite thing is nap time after a good zoom session. She is a hard sleeper and is not a fan of being woken up early in the morning. We are also still learning about personal bubbles and self awareness (on size). She is still learning not to jump up on people to greet and no one told her she's not a lap dog size so she might jump into your lap if you let her!If you are interested in adopting Ruby into your home, please consider her son Bug! They are a great pair and Bug loves the company of his momma. We do not have any history on Ruby's interactions with cats and other small animals and would recommend cautious, slow, and controlled introductions just based off of her reactions to seeing them on walks. Please apply to adopt at: http://www.pawsgh.org

Story
I'm a Freedom Tails graduate! pawsgh.org/freedomtails6/24/24Balsamic here. Hey, I wanted to take a moment to talk about my buddy River. Man, he’s a cool cat(I mean dog). I wanna be just like him when I grow up. My handler is always saying what a good boy he is. He’s always doing his cues correctly, walking on leash so nicely, and minds his human so well. As much as I like this cat(I mean dog) he is kind of making me look bad. I bet he would love to come home with you and give you a chance to hang out with him. Boy, he sure would earn you some cool points. Not to mention, be your most loyal and best friend. I wish I could take him home with me, he is hands down the coolest can(I mean dog) in this joint. Balsamic out!6/13/24I wag my tail excitedly as I sit in my kennel, hoping today will be the day I find my forever home. I’ve been working hard at my training and learning cues that I hope will impress my future owner. I know I’m a catch; who wouldn’t want a handsome, intelligent, and loyal pup like me by their side?I daydream about all of my future adventures I’ll go on with my new owner. Long walks, playtime in the yard, and snuggles on the couch will be the best. I know I’ve got so much love to give and I can’t wait to find the perfect person or family to share it with. I’ll be a good boy and will always be happy to see you come home and ready for our next adventure. I’m River and I’m ready to find my forever home. Come meet me and see for yourself. -RiverHi there, I'm River, the goofiest pup around! Used to live by the river, hence the name. I ended up here at the shelter after chasing a squirrel, ended up in a doggy marathon, and couldn't find my way back! My love for pup cups is legendary, I can sniff them out from a mile away. I'm as sweet as they come, always ready for a cuddle and a game of chase! My jokes? Well, they're a bit ruff, but I guarantee they'll have you howling with laughter. I'm looking for a forever home where I can spread my joy and endless love. Adopt me, and let's create our own hilarious tales together!4/25/24I’ll never forget the day I was abandoned by the river. I was scared and alone, with no food or shelter. I had to fend for myself, searching for scraps and avoiding danger. But despite the hardships, I held onto hope that things would get better. One day, they did. One day I was caught and taken to a place I had never imagined - prison! At first I was terrified, the loud noises and stern faces were overwhelming. But as the days passed, I realized this place was different. The people here are kind and gentle; they gave me food and attention. They even let me sleep inside. I felt warm and cozy. I began to feel a sense of belonging, I felt happy! Now I spend my days playing with other dogs and getting endless belly rubs. The inmates tell me what a good boy I am. I can sense their own struggle and hardships, but despite our pasts we have found Joy and purpose in each other's company. I may have started my journey by a river and that's where I get my name, but I’m forever grateful for this new home and can’t wait to finally find my forever home.05/09/24 I never thought I’d find myself in a place like this - prison dog training program. But it’s been a game changer for me. I’ve learned so much already, like how to sit and lay down on command! My favorite is when a handler says “down,” and I get to stretch out and relax. I love the “good boys” and treats I get when I do it right. The inmates give me lots of attention and I love that! I’m a quick learner and my handlers are impressed with my progress. I’m picking up new cues everyday like “stay,” “wait,” and “shake!” I like it when my handler hides treats and tells me to “find it” like a dog puzzle. I’m proud of myself and know I’m becoming a great companion for someone out there. I may have started out as a stray by the river, but I’ve come a long way. I’m a loveable dog with a lot to give someone. I dream of finding a forever home. If you're out there please come visit me. I promise to sit and snuggle my way into your heart. I’m ready to bring joy and companionship to my human, will it be you? River5/23/24" 10 Things You Should Know About Me"#1 I love long walks and walk like a good boy. I pull a little bit but, just tell me "back" and I will back up to your side. You can also say "By me" and I'll reset and sit at your side. #2 My name is River because they found me by the river. I don't mind water and I am good boy at bath time. #3 I love my humans and I am good with kids. Other dogs I can leave or take. I love people and want to be petted a lot. #4 I am a great house dog. I am potty trained and do not have accidents in the house. I do not get in nthe garbage, either!!#5 I love treats and will do anything you want for a snack, two, or three!#6 I love naps with my owners. Snuggling is mandatory, no exceptions!#7 I am a smart dog and learn my commands quick. If you want me to do something, just ask.#8 I love to run and play but when it is really sunny I like a cool spot in the shade to relax.#9 I am really loyal and affectionate. I promise to bring smiles and doggy kisses to any home that wants to adopt me.#10 I am 4 years old, so I have a lot of living to do. I hope it's in a forever home soon. Look at my pictures " I am a really good boy." Come visit me, it may change both our lives. River7/8/13 River, a handsome boy with a wagging tail, lays in his kennel dreaming of his forever home. In his dream he is surrounded by a loving owner, playing fetch and snuggling with his loved ones. He felt like he finally belonged. As the sun rose over the prison, River’s dream faded away, he woke in his kennel. He stretched his legs and yawned, his tail slightly wagging. He thought to himself, “This could be the day I find my forever home!” Despite the disappointment of not being adopted yet, River’s spirit is unbroken. He knows his forever home is out there. He is determined to find them. River shook off hus slumber and barked loudly, as if to say, “ I’m ready, comer find me!” His big brown eyes sparkled with determination, his tail wagged with excitement, waiting for the day his dream becomes a reality! Story
I'm a Freedom Tails graduate! pawsgh.org/freedomtails 6/24/24Harley Quinn here! Listen up, humans! I’m almost done with my PAWS training. That means you’re running out of time to adopt me! So this week I’m going to make it easy for you lucky adopter humans to realize just how perfect I am for you. 4/19/2024Hi, I’m Harley Quinn and I love to play! Are you a human with an overwhelming urge to throw and kick dog toys? Then I’m your dog! I will chase balls. I will chase kongs. I’ll even chase a frisby and catch it in the air! Why do I do this? I don’t know! But I love it!!! And I will love you if you play with me. I’ll bring the toy right back every time and set it at your feet. I will also protect you from belligerent stuffed animals. They think they’re all so cute and cuddly. I will teach every stuffed animal a lesson by shaking the crap out of it. Once I’ve subdued the beast, we can play fetch with it! WIN-WIN! Well, maybe not for the stuffed animal… but they were asking for it.4/25/2024Harley Quinn here! Taking a break from chasing toys to bark about my week. It’s been mostly chasing toys - calls, frisbees, this little bone I chew on, or literally anything you wave in front of me and throw. I feel it's a good use of my time. I made friends with two humans who like to rub my belly, so they're ok. Though they keep following me around with a dustpan that I poop on. So they're a little weird, but make it up to me by throwing toys afterwards. I've been walking on a leash and being a good girl. Met some dogs too! They're not as fun as toys but I don't mind herding them around and telling them what to do in the yard. I’m taking my yellow bandana test tomorrow. If I pass, it means I get to make ALL the humans in here throw toys for me! It’s about time they started pulling their weight. They’ve just been wasting their little thumb thingies by not throwing toys for me to chase. So finally they will find purpose. Oh my gawd - that reminds me! I haven’t chased a toy in ten minutes! I gotta go!! Harley Quinn signing off!5/2/2024 Hey everyone! Harley Quinn here! This week I have dedicated myself to licking the floor, I know what you are thinking, but hear me out. I’m pretty smart and I have discovered that sometimes food falls on the floor. My theory is that maybe food wants to be on the floor! My genius has also discovered that food tastes good, and by extension the floor tastes good where the food falls. So, I posit that perhaps by licking the delicious floor, I can entice more food to fall there. In order to scientifically test my theory I have spent the last week observing humans eating food, predicting various food falling and the trajectory, and licking the floor. It’s all very technical. Some of you may question my resolve when faced with humans who stubbornly thwart food’s innate desire to become airborne. However, I assure you that I, Harley Quinn, will continue to doggedly continue my research by licking the floor until this mystery is solved. The humans spent this week trying to teach me to look at them. I am not sure why. They are very interesting to look at. They are not made of toys, and only slightly made of food. But, I will be a good girl and help them out. It’s the least I can do. I feel sorry for them because they are not as adorable to look at as I am! Harley Quinn out!5/14/24Harley Quinn here! Okay dogs - let’s talk, we need to set some ground rules for the canine population. First, I have no interest in you. You have no thumbs which means you cannot throw balls for me. If you can;t throw a ball for me, that basically makes you useless in Harlet’s world… unless you are also literally made of bologna. Humans DO appear to be made of bologna, or at least have some sort of supernatural ability to make it appear in their pockets and stylish fanny packs. This is why I let them rub my adorable tummy. It;s all part of my cunning plan to attain their delicious, magical bologna and get them to throw balls. Second, I need NO competition when it comes to chasing balls. Understand that ALL balls belong to me, I get to chase the ball - you get to watch me chase the ball. If you would like to help, I will allow you to be my emotional support animal. Other than that, stay the heck away from my ball! I have no interest in jumping around with you if there is no ball chasing involved. If you do have a ball, you need to drop that thing and get away from me while I play with your ball. I will not be mean to you, but remember: all balls belong to me. So give me your ball and go play with a stick or something. Third, and very importantly, we need to talk about meeting me. I am a lady, and as such, you are not allowed to sniff my butt. I am allowed to sniff your butt, but you need to know your role and just stand there while I do that. If you try to sniff my butt, I will snarl and check the crap out of you. Unless you have a ball. If you have a ball, I will wait patiently for you to sniff me until the second you drop the ball. Then it's MINE, and I will take your ball and run away. Because, remember, all balls belong to me. Great talk dogs, Harley Quinn out!05/16/2024Harley Quinn here! Okay humans - I don’t know what's going on with you, but we need to talk. First you’re all like, “Come here, follow me, let’s go.” All the time it’s go, go, go! Put on the lash and walk, walk, walk! Now all of a sudden you want me to stay, stay?!?! Are you serious right now? Stay in one spot while you walk away, then wait for you to come back, when did this become a thing? I think you people have some serious issues. I do not want to stay. I want to chase balls, frisbees and literally anything you throw over and over and over again. YOU can stay. Stay there, throw the thing and I will be right back with it! I’ll give it back to you because you did such a good job of staying there. Good human. Now… throw the thing again! But nooooo, you just have to ruin our relationship dynamic by making ME stay. Oh I'll do it – while staring at you with an attitude and puppy cuteness! I might even wag my stumpy tail to make you feel even worse about it. You will reap the whirlwind of my cuteness. Mark my words humans, there will be a furry reckoning for all this staying you're putting me through! Harley Quinn out!5/23/24Harley Quinn here! Today's blog is for dogs, so all humans must stop reading now...ok dogs, this blog will be about how to trick the humans who think they can tame your canine wildness. Humans try to very cleverly get you to do things for them, like sitting and laying down. They have these little hand signals for each one. My trick is to avoid eye contact, so they think I can't see the hand signal. When I look up, I wag my adorable stumpy tail so they forget what they were asking for and rub my belly instead. Now, if not looking at them doesn't work, try looking busy. Humans don't like to interrupt when you look busy. So, when my humans ask me to lay down I start to chew on my butt. The humans will suddenly become self-conscious because they are ashamed of interrupting my important work and will look away. This frees me up for more important tasks, like chewing my butt some more. Here's a really important tip. Humans can only tell you not to do something if they are there to do it. I'm a good girl, so I don't jump up on the bed. When the humans leave the house they don't know, so when they leave, I sleep on the bed! You have to remember to jump back down to your dog bed on the floor when you hear the key in the door. Don't make my mistake of sleeping too deeply or you won't hear them and they will catch you. If that happens, wag your tail and look adorable, they will forget you're not supposed to be up there and rub your tummy instead. Haha! Fooled again silly humans. Just remember these important tips and you too will be the master of your humans. Harley out!!!5/30/24 Harley Quinn here! This week I've decided that I hate keys. What is with these humans and jingling keys all the time? I discovered that jingling keys sounds mean that some stranger is about to look into my window, look into MY window?! Not on my watch! So now I bark at key sounds. That will teach those keys! But now my humans keep trying to teach me to be quiet. If I’m quiet, how will I warn them about approaching keys?1 Humans are crazy. I also like to bark at tall people sometimes. There tall humans need to be taken down a peg- - both figuratively and literally (pun intended). Nobody needs to be THAT tall! Look at me- I’m super short, and I get along just fine. Food and water bowl adjacent and I don't have as far down to go to the floor to take a nap. Also, balls tend to hide on the ground, and it;s better to stalk them at their level. So I will continue to bark at the taller humans, letting them know I do not approve of their weird height deformity. Oh my gawd! I just realized there may be tall humans who jingle keys out there. I will lose my friggin mind if that happens! I need to think about this… and chew on my butt for a while.Harley Quinn out!6/6/24 Harley Quinn here! Okay, we need to talk again. THis time it’s about how you keep thinking you;re smarter than me. I know, I know you have removable fur suits and those cute little thumbs that let you open doors and cans of dog food. But I am still clearly the more clever animal here, and you guys need to know your role! Case in point - last month you pulled a toy out of a spare treasure can sitting under the desk. You thought I wouldn’t notice this magical toy producing treasure can in action. HAHA! Harley Quinn saw everything! I’m on to you, humans. Now I have the secret. I’ve knocked that garbage can open everyday since then looking for a toy. I know how magical cans of toys work - if a toy was in there once, there’s always a chance there will be a toy in there again! That’s just science. And don’t think you can outwit me humans! You can stack all the stuff you want on top of that can, but I will keep knocking it over, just in case the toy appears again. And last week when you hid the can under the bed, what happened? That’s right, I dragged it out while you were in the bathroom. HAHA! Harley Quinn will not be defeated! So remember, I am the superior manal here. Be good and I might share the toy I worked so hard to get from the magical can. Until next time, Harley Quinn out! 6/13/24Harley Quinn here! Fantastic news! This week I got a boyfriend!!!!! His name is Mickey and he is a very good boy who smells like sausage treats. I met him in the dog yard when I stole his toy. Then I chased him around for a while and chewed on his face. He has a very chewable face. We’ve since gone on several dates, doing the normal stuff everyone does on dates. I chase him around, then push him down and bark at him. I steal his treats and his toys, then bark at him some more. Then we drink some water out of a bucket. And we wrap it up by barking at a weird tuft of grass that we both feel needs barking at. It’s every girl's dream. Not sure how far this thing will go, as I tend to lose interest in anyone who has no thumbs with which to throw balls. But we’ll see. As long as I can steal his treats, ill let him be my boyfriend. I might even let him sniff my butt. No promises though! I am an independent woman! Harley Quinn Out!6/24/24Harley Quinn here! Listen up, humans! I’m almost done with my PAWS training. That means you’re running out of time to adopt me! So this week I’m going to make it easy for you lucky adopter humans to realize just how perfect I am for you. Play DogIf you want a dog to play with- I’m your girl. I will play fetch anytime you want, for as long as you want. And I always bring the ball, frisby, or rope right back to your feet(I am so great)! If you like roughhousing a little-I’m your dog. I don’t bite, even when I’m super excited. If I nip your sleeves, I will relax immediately if you just stand up and slow down(I’m so sweet)!Snuggle DogIf you want to cuddle-I’m for you! I like to lay next to my favorite humans or at their feet. I love to have my chest and belly rubbed. I’ll also get off the bed or couch if you just tell me OFF(or you could just let me have the bed). I’m not fond of strangers petting me, so I’ll shy away from them, but I easily get comfortable with being petted by people I know. I sometimes hop a little when greeting people I really love, but I never jump on strangers. If you call me up I will put my paws in your lap and will get down if you say OFF(I am so adorable). Exercise DogIf you like walking or jogging I’m your multi-footed cardio partner! I walk great on a leash, though I usually like to walk a little in front of slow humans. I don’t pull and will come back to you once I feel tension on the leash. My only problem being out and about is that sometimes I get snarly with other dogs. However, it’s easy to get me to come away from dogs I’m having an argument with. I am not aggressive-I just don’t like them very much(I’m such a good girl)!Medium Care DogI am fluffy and soft and fun to pet. My coat is thicker, so I shed light-colored hair a bit. I don’t really like being brushed but I’ll tolerate it(Just pet me doing it)! My coat stays pretty clean but, when it is bath time, I’ll quietly let you wash me(but I hate it).I am not a fussy eater. You can just leave the bowl out and let me regulate how much I eat(all your sausage belongs to me). I wait patiently by the door to go out. I can wake up and hold it until you are ready to take me out(even my turds are adorable). Not a dog dogI get along with some dogs, but others I get snarly with. I don’t want to fight them but sometimes I won’t back down unless my human calls or pulls me away(dogs are jerks). Not BarkyDo you like lots of barking? Me neither! I don’t bark unless stressed out by weird stuff, or if left in an outside kennel just out of your reach. I rarely bark when playing, even with other dogs. I don’t bark in the house unless I hear keys jiggling or somebody at the door. I was bred to notice out of place things, so sometimes I bark a little at really tall strangers or weird hats(don’t we all).TrainedI am smart and highly motivated by treats and toys. I can do pretty much anything and learned all my PAWS cues and agility course stuff really fast. If you want to impress your friends with a super dog-I’m that dog(adopt me before the Avengers do!).Adopt Me NowI sound pretty awesome, right? Best dog ever? Yeah, probably. Just sayin! So adopt me today! Bring toys and treats! -Harley Quinn out!!Please apply to adopt at: http://www.pawsgh.org
