Meet Orlando! He came into the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 2/27 as a stray He is a 3 yr old neutered male Aussie Cattle Dog mix that weighs 72lbs. He has charmed his way into my heart. It`s that adorable face with the sweet smile that drew me to him but his amiable sweet nature and personality factored in as well. Orlando walks quite nicely on a leash. He pottied in the yard. He will sit for treats and takes them nicely. I could not interest him in toys or balls but he is playful. Outside he had his nose to the ground and enjoyed exploring. This frisky perky boy needs a home with someone who would stay committed to him. He wants to be an indoor pup where he can bond with his human companions. In return he will be a devoted and loving pet. Nutritious food, a comfy doggie bed and plenty of time with his people playing with exercising him and he would even be open to learning some commands.

This delightful and charming girl is Sapphire, a Louisiana Catahoula Leopard mix picked up by one of our officers as a stray on 3/31. This attractive girl weighs 84 pounds, is approx 6 years old and is spayed. She has the most stunning ice blue/gray eyes! She is one busy, on-the-go type girl who is lively and active. She loves treats and takes them nicely. She walks well on a leash. She did her business in the shelter yard immediately upon arrival. She knows the sit command. She was not interested in toys or balls, but rather seemed to enjoy exploring the yard. She is friendly, was A-OK with me giving her loving attention and rolled over for belly rubs. She appears as though she’s been well cared for, but possibly was mostly an outside dog judging from the calluses on her elbows. She stayed very close to me and just seemed to want to be near a human companion. Sapphire hopes her stay at the shelter will be a short one, and that her evaluation will draw attention to what a wonderful and devoted family member she could be.

Lucy came to us as an owner surrender. Sadly, she was never spayed and kept having litter after litter. We agreed to take the puppies as long as they gave us Lucy as well. We wanted her to finally have a home where she could be a cherished pet. Lucy is an extremely sweet and happy girl. She gets along with dogs of all sizes, cats and she adores children. She is in great shape! Our vet thought she was only 3 years old because her teeth are pearly white. This precious boy with the sweetest smile and bright eyes is Garrett. He arrived at the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 4/17, as a stray. Garrett is listed as an Australian Kelpie mix. He has an attractive golden coat with dark streaks and beautiful eyes. He weighs 67 pounds, is about 2 years of age and has been neutered since arriving at the shelter. He looks to have been nicely cared for. He may be house trained as he did his business in the yard. He walks well on a leash and had no reaction to several dogs that barked at him as he walked past their kennels. He is amiable and has a sweet disposition. He was A-OK with allowing me to pet him. Garrett is well behaved, calm and gentle, and a bit on the shy side at this point. Just like all of our dogs, he deserves a home in which he would receive plenty of TLC, an inside life with his people, a soft cushy doggy bed or two and nutritious food. This excitable high-energy boy is Toby, listed as an Australian Kelpie, weighing 70lbs, about 2 years old and neutered. He was surrendered on 4/17 to the Mesquite Animal Shelter because his owner was moving and unable or unwilling to take him. Owner reported that he is house trained, is OK with other dogs, cats, and children, but has not lived with any of these. He likes to play and go for walks. He seems to have been well cared for although perhaps over fed. His coat is shiny and soft and his eyes are a beautiful blue! I discovered that he loves to chase and throw tennis balls up in the air to entertain himself. He is very energetic and in his excitement will jump on you. Until that behavior is corrected Toby would not be a good dog for a home with young children. Also, it was very difficult to get a leash on him as he resisted very stringently! He needs to be trained to having a leash put on. Once he had a leash on, he was fine and walked OK although has a bit of a strong pull. I think he is missing his owner and doesn’t have a clue as to how he ended up in a city shelter. Can`t say as I blame him! He is friendly and let me pet him.
