Story
My name is Konai and I’m looking for my forever home. I am a snuggly, sweet boy. My “must haves” are a family who will keep regular 6-month vet check-ups and prescription diet so I’ll stay healthy. I’m 8 years old and I came to SIRA from a commercial breeding facility where I helped make puppies. I love this life so much better! I can’t wait to have a forever family of my very own! I love snuggling with my foster mom. I get so excited when she comes home that I jump and spin like crazy. Can you blame me? She gives me such wonderful pets and scritches and walks and treats! I give her kisses in return. She says I’m her cuddle bug. When foster mom is home, I like to follow her around so I know where she is. I guess I’m not fond of being alone. I love other dogs. When I see a dog outside on our walk I’ll cry with excitement. There are girl dogs here in my foster home and I get along well with them. I like playing with them and hanging out. I’d love to have a nice dog friend in my forever home, but foster mom says I’d probably do okay as an “only dog” as long as my family is home a lot so I don’t get lonely. I also love going for walks – I like exploring the neighborhood even more than playing in the yard, so I’m fine if my forever family doesn’t have a fence. I like playing with toys, but I still have no clue what to do when foster mom tosses one at me. When I’m not following foster mom around or playing, my favorite things are treats and taking naps. Foster mom says I need to warn you that I snore like a bear. Hrmph! I DO NOT! (Wait, what’s a bear?) I also like rolling around on freshly mopped floors so I can smell clean like the Swiffer spray. Yeah, I’m goofy. Anyway, when I first came to SIRA, my foster family could tell that something wasn’t right. After lots of visits to the vet, they discovered that I had tumors in my colon and I had to have emergency surgery! That was scary and not fun at all. If you follow SIRA’s Facebook page, you may have seen my story. Well, I’m healed now from my surgery and foster mom says that I’m ready for my forever family! Because of my surgery, I’ll need to stay on a prescription diet and treats. I’ll also need to have an ultrasound exam every 6 months to make sure that no new tumors grow back. I’ve never lived with any little humans, but foster mom thinks that I’d be okay with them. I haven’t met any cats or small pets, but I love to chase and hunt critters in the yard, so I’m not sure how I would do with small pets. I’m neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations and I weigh 28 pounds. If you live in the Midwest and would love a sweet, silly snuggle-buddy to share your home with, then I’m your boy! Visit www.savingshibas.com/adopt to start the process of becoming an approved adopter with SIRA. The application process helps SIRA learn more about you and your home environment so they can tell if we’ll be a good match. Once approved, SIRA will introduce you to my foster mom so we can meet.

Story
My name is Bert and I’m looking for my forever home. I’m worried that nobody will want me. My foster dad says that I’m such a sweetheart and such a good boy that people will fall in love. He says I may not be a cute puppy, but I’m still handsome. I hope he’s right. I’m 8 years old and spent my whole life at a commercial breeding facility. As long as us dogs were doing our jobs, nobody paid much attention, which was fine with me, because the humans weren’t very nice. I’m trying to wrap my brain around this new world here in my foster home in Machesney Park, IL. There are so many noises and people and things moving around - it’s new and scary. The people here have been kind and gentle and patient with me. They give me good food and pets and scritches and I’m learning that feels good! I’m still scared of them, but I like to watch what they’re doing from a distance. Foster dad says I’m a really smart and good boy. I have learned to go potty outside and am really well-behaved in the house. I let my foster family pick me up with no issues. I panic sometimes and try to make a run for it. So my forever family will need to be very careful to prevent me from getting loose. I’d do best in a calm, quiet household who can be patient if it takes me a while to adjust. I’ll need a securely fenced yard. I’m good with other dogs, but would probably do okay as an only dog too. I’ve never met any cats, so I don’t know what I’d think of them. Foster dad says small kids would probably not be a good match for me since I’m pretty big and heavy when I get running – I might accidentally knock them over. I am neutered and vaccinated and I weigh 34 pounds. I’m healthy, except that when I first came into foster care my rear legs weren’t as strong as they should have been. After some rest and medicine, I’m much better – and can run like the wind! If you live in the Midwest and will give a sweet gentleman like me a soft place to lay his head, I promise I’ll be the best boy ever. Visit www.savingshibas.com/adopt to apply to become an approved SIRA adopter. The application process helps SIRA tell if we’ll be a good match. Once approved, they’ll introduce you to my foster home so we can meet.

Story
I'm Drake and I’m looking for my forever home. I’m 5 y.o. and weigh 30 lbs. Are you looking for a walking or hiking buddy? I’m your guy! I came to my foster home here in Montgomery, IL, from a commercial breeding facility where I used to help make puppies. This is my first time living in a home with people and there is so much to get used to. So far, my favorite things are going for walks and exploring outside. And the good food! I like it when foster mom gives me neck scritches. Loud noises still spook me. I have learned to trust foster mom, but I still get skittish around new people and places. I’m super-smart and a very good boy. I solved my first food puzzle in less than a minute, and I’ve only had 2 potty accidents the whole time I’ve lived here! I’m pretty quiet. I only bark when I’m excited (like when I want to play) and I squeal when I’m startled. I’m independent – I usually hang out by myself. But I’ll run to foster mom for comfort if there’s a thunderstorm – or if I’m hungry or thirsty. I get along with the animals who live here. Sometimes I worry that they might hog foster mom’s attention, so I’ll push them out of the way. Sometimes I guard high-value treats and food, so foster mom recommends separating me when I’m given something really yummy. I like to chase critters outside, so I might not be good with small pets. My perfect forever home would be patient and calm with humans who like walks. It would be great to have a laid-back dog to show me the ropes. It might take a while to warm up, but I like watching them and copying what they do. Little kids are not a good match for me (so scary!). I’m a healthy boy – neutered and vaccinated. I have something called a luxating patella. That means I have a loose kneecap. It doesn’t cause any problems now, but if it does in the future, surgery might be needed. If you live in the Midwest and want a buddy to explore the great outdoors with, visit www.savingshibas.com/adopt to apply to become an approved SIRA adopter. The application process helps SIRA learn more about you and your home environment to see if we’ll be a good match. Once approved, they’ll introduce you to my foster home so we can meet.

Story
My name is Zena and I’m looking for my forever home. I’m 9 y.o. and I am a tiny girl, weighing only 14 pounds. I may be small, but I have a huge personality! I came to my foster home here in Belleville, IL, from a commercial breeding facility that shut down. I’m glad that life is behind me now. I really like this new life. It’s scary sometimes – there are so many strange noises and experiences. But even if I’m skittish at first, after I get used to things, I relax and let my inner diva shine! I love going for walks and I’m well-behaved on leash. I even let strangers pet me sometimes if foster mom is holding me. I really like my foster mom! She gives me treats and I give her lots of affection and kisses. Foster mom thinks that I would thrive as an only dog in my forever home since I don’t really play or interact with the other dogs here. Meal time and treats are some of my favorite things, and I love rounding up all the stuffed toys and putting them in one place. I like keeping track of my babies. Then after a few days, I’ll move them to a new spot. I’m okay with the other dogs in my foster home and don’t pay attention to the cats who live here. Sometimes indoors I growl or snap at the other dogs if they get too close to my food or my stuff. Hey – I’ve got to show them that I can stand up for myself, right? I also make my feelings known when something displeases me, like if a loud noise startles me, or if I’m confined in my kennel and I want out. Because I can be vocal, I might not be the best match for an apartment or condo with shared walls. I’m a very smart girl. I have learned to open up cabinets and find all kinds of treasures inside and I can magically get into rooms that are blocked by baby gates (I’m not telling how!). I am also fully house trained Because I’m small, I can squeeze through really small openings, so my forever home will want to be careful about even small gaps in or under a fence or gate. I’m a healthy girl – spayed and vaccinated. If you live in the Midwest and are interested in a big girl in a small package, I’ll be your bff for life! Story
My name is Brynn and I’m looking for my forever home. I am about 1 y.o. and weigh 24 lbs. I came to SIRA after I was found all by myself with a broken leg! When nobody claimed me at the shelter, SIRA rescued me and brought me to my foster home here in Machesney Park, IL, to recuperate. Despite my ordeal, I’m a goofy, healthy, happy and playful girl. I love attention from my foster family – getting petted or picked up and held made me so happy. I will ask for attention when I want it (Aroo!!) and I’ll thank you with kisses on your hand. Treats also make me happy – and watching foster dad fill up my food bowl! I am good with other dogs and I love kids – even little ones. I’d be a great match for an active family since I have plenty of energy. My foster dad says I’m one of the most easy-going dogs he has ever fostered. I have excellent leash manners (well, I might tug just a bit sometimes). I’m potty trained and am well-behaved when left alone in my pen. I haven’t met any cats, so I don’t know how I’d react to them. My forever home will want to be careful to guard against escapes, so I never have to go through another ordeal again. Shibas can be sneaky, slipping out of open doors or through even tiny gaps in a fence. Now that my leg is healed, I’m a healthy girl – spayed and vaccinated and ready for my forever family! If you think I might be right for you, the next step is to apply to become an approved SIRA adopter. The application process helps SIRA make sure we’ll be a good match. Once approved, SIRA will introduce you to my foster dad, so we can meet. Visit www.savingshibas.com/adopt for more information and to apply.

Story
My name is Juno and I’m looking for my forever home! I’m a pretty girl – 1 yr old and weighing 20 lbs. I came to my foster home here in Montgomery, IL, from a home where I wasn’t treated nicely. But despite a rough past, I am happy, smart, playful, and sweet. I love being outside! Foster mom says I walk beautifully on leash. She’s working with me to ignore people and dogs on our walks so I don’t bother them. I like to try to chase birds and squirrels sometimes. Once I picked up a stick, except it wasn’t a stick – it moved! It was a snake! I was so proud of my prize – I couldn’t figure out why foster mom wasn’t. I love the outdoors so much that I can be a door-bolter and escape artist. My forever home will need to be very careful when opening doors or gates. I get along well with other dogs, but it’s important that we are introduced gradually and on neutral territory, and feeding separately is recommended. I don’t bother the resident cat, so I’d probably do fine living with a dog-savvy cat. At home, I love to look out of the front window at all the people walking by and I love affection from my foster family. Car rides are also fun! There are human kids here in my foster home, who respect my space and I am good with them. I love it when the 4-yr-old pets me and I like to play with the 11-yr-old. Since I’m young, I can be nippy when I play, so it will be important for my forever home to re-direct with positive reinforcement to help me learn good manners. I’m fully potty trained – no accidents. I sleep through the night in my crate and when my foster family goes out. I might get whiny when they are leaving, but then I settle down. I’m very food/treat motivated, which will help with training. I am healthy, spayed and vaccinated. I had a skin rash when I first came to SIRA, but that cleared up quickly with medication. If you live in the Midwest and want a pretty, happy, playful, sweet girl like me to be your BFF, visit www.savingshibas.com/adopt to apply to become an approved adopter. The application process helps SIRA learn more about you and your home environment so they can make sure we’ll be a good match. Once approved, they’ll introduce you to my foster mom so we can meet! I can’t wait!
