Story
Hi my name is Danny and I am 2 years old. I’m known as a FMD, Formosan Mountain Dog, who came all the way from Taiwan to be your new best friend. Foster mom says I a special boy who needs lots of time and affection to feel safe in my new home. Upon meeting me, I come across as shy and occasionally aggressive, but I mean you no harm I’m just scared of strangers and new things.  Once I bond with you, I will be by your side constantly and love to snuggle close to you on couch or bed. In my home there are lots of dog beds, but I prefer to be with you. I have lived with an older child previously and eventually I got used to him and loved him, but it is not recommended they be young due to my fears with loud noises and quick movements.  If you have older, considerate children I`ll eventually grow to love them too. I love going for walks, I get so excited it`s hard for foster mom to get my harness on, which is recommended due to what they call a “flight risk”. Speaking of “flight risk”, I would like a fenced yard because I love to run, play and fetch the ball for you, oh how I love my ball, so a fence keeps me safe. I have lived with other dogs older than me and they didn`t really play with me too much. In my current foster home I have 3 siblings, 1 older and smaller, and 2 my age and size and like to play with them.  I am ok to be an only dog, so I can have all your attention. When I do meet another dog, I need to be introduced to them slowly. I like dogs my size 35-40 lbs, it takes me longer to warm up to dogs bigger than me. I’m not sure how I feel about cats… My previous foster mother did not keep me crated and free fed me and I liked that. However, she did put me in a room of my own with chew toys, my Kong, and snuffle mat when she left the house. My current foster mom crates me during the day when she’s at work, and schedule feeds me and I’m learning to be ok with it. I reluctantly go in crate and don’t kick up any fuss. She leaves me a frozen peanut butter filled Kong and a tough chew toy and I just rest waiting for her to return. When she lets me out, I get so excited and jump all over her, another reason I probably shouldn’t have young human siblings, but I’m working on keeping my feet on ground. If you think I would make a good fit to your family, make sure to apply for me here: Adoption Information (hankshaven.ca) * Danny is being fostered in Barrie *Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.July 2, 2024, 2:49 pm

Story
Hi! My name is Teddy! I am a 6 year old toy poodle looking for my forever home.  I know what you may be thinking...sweet, adorable, toy poodle who might be suited for sitting on a couch all day snuggling. Well as much as I do enjoy a cuddle with my favourite person, the stereotype couldn't be further from the truth. I am a high energy boy who loves to run and play and explore! I absolutely need to go to an active home who will give me the time and attention I need to be my best self!  I have a bit of a sad story. Unfortunately, I developed some resource guarding issues as a young dog, and my previous owners surrendered me, I was even almost euthanized for it. My foster Mom has been showing me that I don't need to guard things, and that playing WITH people is way more fun than playing on my own. I've even learned to play nice with the 5+ dogs in my foster home! I prefer the small ones and the cats, but even the big dogs aren't as bad as I once thought. Because of the issues I'm working on, my perfect home will not have young children. Everyone in my new home will need to be able to understand my boundaries and rules. I love to learn new tricks and I am learning to like going in the car because that means new adventures! I'm even starting to enjoy my crate because foster mom puts all the best treats and toys in there. I have a silly, goofy personality and make my foster parents laugh all the time. At heart, I'm really just a shy dog who's learning the big ways of the new world...and I think I'm really digging it!  From my foster mom:  Teddy came to use with some pretty severe resource guarding issues. Although he has come so far in the time he's been with us, we are asking any potential adopters to be fully aware that this is a process and not a solution. We ask anyone who would like to adopt him to attend an information and training session on resource guarding with the team at Hanks Have. Teddy has thrived with positive reinforcement techniques and we aim to find him a home who will continue this work and give him the best life possible. To apply for Teddy, please fill out an application here: Adoption Information (hankshaven.ca). Please ensure to describe your experience with resource guarding as he will need owners with experience. * Teddy is being fostered in Bracebridge *Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.July 2, 2024, 2:49 pm

Story
Griffin is a three-year-old bully mix who weighs about 74lbs. If you want a dog that will love you from an inch away, he’s your guy. If you love walks, he’s your guy. If you want a dog who loves food as much as you do, he’s definitely your guy. Everybody comments on how handsome he is, and they are right! Griffin is a typical bully, loves his people, and is strong, smart & stubborn. Griffin currently lives with two cats and though he doesn’t bother with the one but will chase the other on occasion and is always closely monitored. He doesn’t know his size and is likely to knock over small children, so older children would be best. Griffin likes to protect his people and will bark and growl at strangers if they approach his person while he’s on leash. Allowing him to maintain his personal space and redirecting works well. Griffin is very dog selective and is leash reactive. Slow introductions are absolutely necessary with all dogs and he typically does better with female dogs and does not like unfixed males. When Griffin has decided he likes another dog he LOVES to play, he is like the energizer bunny and can play forever. Griffin is loyal to his pack, once he’s decided you’re in, you’ll be in forever. He is incredibly powerful and if you give him an inch he will take a mile. He needs a strong handler and someone who is willing and able to continue with his training and who can be consistent, he’s a very smart boy and highly food motivated! Griffin is currently working on impulse control and furthering his obedience. In his new home Griffin will need an outlet for his physical AND mental energy to keep him calm and happy. During the day while his foster family are away, he happily snoozes in his crate. If interested in having Griffin join your family, please apply here: Adoption Information (hankshaven.ca)    Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.July 2, 2024, 2:49 pm

Story
My name is Scout, and I’m so excited that it’s finally my turn to start looking for my furever home! I am a 10 month Chocolate Lab and I came in to Hank’s with Megaesophagus Disorder. If you’ve been following Hank’s, you know I’ve growing up with my foster families for quite some time. I started off in pretty bad condition, but I’ve greatly improved! I do have to eat in a bailey chair still, but I happily go into it when you announce there is food. My home has to be careful about me getting into too much which is why I am crated when people are out, but don’t worry, I do great in the crate. I’ve been so lucky to have dog siblings in my foster homes and I do great with them. I’ve lived with kids as well but would recommend older/dog experienced kids simply because I’m still jumpy and love to give kisses which might scare some kids. I’m a very typical lab and have lots and love to go on adventures with my family and play with my dog siblings. Here’s what my foster family has to say about me: “Scout is an absolute love bug! If you’re looking for a dog that is always happy to see you, Scout is for you. His energy is electric ! Besides his little health issue, Scout is a normal dog. He loves to play, he can be cuddly and loving. He is always ready for adventure and play! He is a great dog if you're someone that loves to explore, hike, walk or be active. As the days in foster care progress, Scout is learning more and more as his days in foster care grow. He is a fast learner and a quick eater! He’s an incredible little guy that’s ready to fill any home with energy and love If interested in having Scout join your family, please fill out an application here: Adoption Information (hankshaven.ca) Scout is being fostered in Beaverton. Though Scout’s Megaesophagus Disorder is under control, please educate yourself on the condition before applying.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.July 2, 2024, 2:49 pm

Story
Hi, I’m Wilson, a 6.5 year old bully mix. I am a cuddle bug who just wants to be with his people, a stage 5 clinger and follows foster mom everywhere all day and just wants to be wherever she is. I love to chill on the couch but when someone comes in the door, I get super excited and will jump up to greet you. I love all toys, especially balls, car rides, food and going for walks, though I am very strong and will pull. I am crate trained, though am so well behaved that my fosters don’t put me in it, but I do still need a crate as I use it as my safe place and somewhere to go when I need a break. I lost my first home when my human suddenly died, and the second home didn’t work out so this time I am looking for my furever home where I can retire and live happily ever after. Though I currently live with kids, I think a home without them or have older and respectful ones who know when to give me alone time is best. A human who is home often would be great and if there is another dog, a big one that likes to play hard and keep up is ideal, but I am fine without one as well. I need a quiet home with a strong handler who understand bullies and isn’t intimated by my personality. I need someone to snuggle and love me and to make me their whole world, is that too much to ask for? If Wilson is a great fit, make sure to apply for him here: Adoption Information (hankshaven.ca) *Wilson is being fostered in North York* Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.July 2, 2024, 2:49 pm

Story
Hi, my name is Wednesday, Female - spayedAmerican Bulldog MixApprox. 3 years oldI am a constant companion. Are you looking for an emotionally secure, mutually satisfying, low maintenance relationship? I am all you need. Let me sit at your feet, walk by your side, and I'll be your devoted companion forever. My reactions to:Cats - I get along well with other animals including cats, I show mild interest prior to doing my own thingDogs - I enjoy having a friendly dog companion, I would benefit from a calm laid-back dog like myself Meeting new people - Given my shy personality I would benefit from additional time and confidence building while meeting new people. Children - I don't have much experience interacting with children. As I can be nervous of new things I would benefit from a relaxed/calm household with childrenObedience training - I would benefit from some extra obedience training though have shown great improvement in my training during my time at the shelter Leash walking - I've improved with my leash walking though still need some work with building confidence on a leashCar rides - unknown at this timeCrates/My kennel - I am a good girl with my crate/kennel and will enter/exit without a fuss House trained - I do my best to hold my business until I am able to relieve myself outsideStressful situations - Depends on situationPlaytime - I enjoy playing with my toys in my free-time!
