Please contact Melissa A Aten (melissaa@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet.hound dog awooing for his forever family! HENRY NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name:  Henry    Best Guess for Breed:   Treeing Walker Coonhound mix   Best Guess for Age:  3 years as of June 2024        SEX:   Male   Approximate Weight: 58 lbs   Gets Along With:    Henry does well with other dogs! We haven't seen him with kids or cats but he can be tested   Currently Living at:  Shelter; needs a foster or forever home in the DC area after completing heartworm treatment! Special adoption considerations: Henry is a truly Lucky Dog! He tested positive for Heartworm disease but has already been treated! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites.  Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. We are happy to talk more in depth about heartworm disease and treatment during the adoption counseling process.   See this happy handsome boy in this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spF6uMpiU98   Henry is Looking For:  Well, hi! I'm Henry! I'm just a good hound dog, with the typical hound's nose for adventure. I'd like to go to a home with someone whose able to take me on long, sniffy walks so I can inspect my neighborhood with my houndie nose. We live to sniff! I'd also like to be able to play with other pups sometimes. Most of all, though, I want to be safe and loved and know who my human is. What do you say? Am I the pup for you?   What My Foster Says About Me:  We will update this once he has arrived in the DC area and spent some time with his foster   Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken.  All of our dogs are working on their crate training.  TO ADOPT:    The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.  If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog   Lucky Dog Animal Rescue does our best to provide accurate information about the dogs we have for adoption. Story
Good with: Dogs, kids Not tested with: Cats House trained: Yes Energy level: Moderate Noise level: Quiet Hi, I'm Raven! My soulful eyes and gentle demeanor have won over the hearts of many, and I'm ready to find my forever family. My previous family couldn't say enough good things about me. They said I was the best dog for any family, and you know what? I believe them! I absolutely adore humans there's nothing I love more than snuggling up with my favorite people and basking in their affection. Unfortunately, my previous family's work hours changed, and they had to make the tough decision to return me to the shelter. But I'm staying positive! I know that there's a family out there just waiting to welcome me into their hearts and home. I'm a sweet and affectionate dog with a lot of energy. I absolutely adore people and other dogs, and I get along with everyone I meet. One of my favorite things about myself is how mellow and adaptable I am; I'm gentle and friendly, making me a great companion for both adults and kids. I'm proud to say that I have basic training and know commands like "sit," "come," and "leave it." I'm also housetrained and crate trained. On walks, I might pull on the leash a bit, but I love meeting strangers and other dogs. I'm generally quiet and rarely barkI've only barked once in the two weeks I've been here! I get along well with all dogs and play nicely at the dog park. While I'm great with kids, my tendency to jump when excited means I'd do better with older children until I learn to keep all four paws on the ground. I'm looking for a forever home where I can stay active and be surrounded by love. Could that be with you? My foster guardian says: She is very mellow and gets along with everyone and every dog she meets. Likes: Long walks, short walks, hikes, and trips to the dog park are some of my favorite activities. Dislikes: I do have a few dislikes; thunderstorms, fireworks, loud noises, and the vacuum can make me a bit nervous. My ideal home: I would thrive in an active family, and while a yard would be great, I've been doing just fine in a small apartment with plenty of exercise and play. I love kids (as long as they are older) and would thrive in a family with children. Story
Meet Betty: 4yr old, female, Coonhound mix, 44 pounds. If interested in adopting Betty, please complete our nonbinding application: click here to send a non-binding application  Hedgesville Hounds took in Betty in December 2023.  While clearly very shy, her evaluators perceived a dog who wanted to trust humans and had a sweetness about her that was very promising.  Since coming into care, Betty’s health has improved by leaps and bounds.  Weighing about 27 pounds when she came to us, she now weighs a long, lean, and leggy 44 pounds.  Her once dull and rough coat is softer and shines in the sunlight.  Betty came to Hedgesville Hounds burdened with heartworms.  She did very well during her heartworm treatment and after 3 months of treatment, is now clear of any heartworm disease. Betty is a sweet and gentle dog.  She is very good about handling and is excellent at toenail clipping and ear cleaning.  Because of the heartworm disease, Betty spent months on crate rest.  Since being released from her physical restrictions, Betty has enjoyed her freedom and progressed to daily runs around the yard with other dogs and by herself, leaping off the deck and rolling around in the grass, chasing robins on the ground and buzzards in the air, even adding silly leaps and twists just for the sheer fun of it.  Betty’s foster Mom thinks she is mixed with some kind of site hound, like Whippet or Greyhound.  Betty is streamlined in shape, has long and delicate legs, a sleek head, and doesn’t like to SIT.  Her favorite positions are standing and fully reclining.  Jumping up on items does not come naturally to her, hence her rare use of the couch and her current inability to jump into the back of the car.  She doesn’t mind being lifted into the car and climbs right into the car crate.  She is an excellent and quiet car passenger. Betty is potty trained, and she can be trusted loose in the house as long as she gets outside every 3-4 hours during the day.  She is fine all night long, even uncrated.  Betty is crate-trained as well. She may whine a bit at first, but then she settles down well. Betty’s leash walking skills have steadily improved while in foster care.  When out on walks, Betty still tends to pull on the leash.  Her foster mom has been using a Gentle Leader head halter, which works better for her than a no-pull harness. Betty will need continued positive training and practice to master this skillfully. It seems like Betty is going through a second puppyhood as she has been exploring her world by mouth.   Nothing has been damaged beyond repair, but her new family will want to keep items out of her reach and continue to teach her what is appropriate to chew on.  Betty occasionally chews her Nylabones or soft chew toys.  She also really enjoys her Collagen Retriever Rolls (rawhide replacements). Betty would likely be best suited for someone who is home all or most of the day. We do not have any knowledge of her experience with children, therefore we recommend a home with children over age 10. A securely fenced yard with a 4ft or higher fence is a necessity.  Betty gets along well with other dogs and also with cats.  Betty has come a long way since she joined Hedgesville Hounds.  She has proven that our initial assessment of her sweetness was spot on.  She probably won’t win any obedience titles; however, if you’re looking for a gentle dog to simply love you unconditionally, well, Betty has the rule book memorized! click here to send a non-binding application

Ruby is a girl that takes a minute to adjust but when she does, she will give you all of her. When she gets excited she'll show you by full body wiggles and the tongue hanging out the side of her mouth. She thinks that she can work her way into any dogs heart and the sound of her voice can get her whatever she wants. Ruby excels with at least one other dog to help show her what right looks like. She has done well with friendly dogs big and small.

Benny has never met a stranger. He loves almost everyone he meets, although he is a little anxious around small children. He is great with other dogs. His personality has been described as goofy. Do you see his beautiful Bette Davis eyes? Benny would make a great second dog. Benny had a fractured leg. He has had FHO surgery 3/2023 and is all healed. He puts weight on the leg but may have a limp. Katie T. has become Benny's Guardian Angel In Honor of her Grandmother. Benny comes to us from a crowded rural southwestern Virginia shelter.  Breed: beagle/hound Gender: Male DOB: approximately 5/2022 Size potential: 35 pounds PLEASE NOTE:  we only adopt to residents of the DC metro area, which includes DC, Prince Georges and Montgomery Counties in MD, and Arlington, Fairfax, Prince William, and Loudoun Counties in VA. To learn more about our upcoming events and to see which event they will be attending, please visit our event page at https://www.lostdogrescue.org/events/ (*please note that the specific event pages are typically updated on Fridays with information on which dogs will be attending which events*) Did someone say "Good Girl?" That is one of Hope's favorite phrases. She also loves to hear "treat" and "walk", because, after all, she is a beagle... Hope loves to be outside and around others and has the funniest smile and silliest expressions. Hope is a very sweet senior beagle. She is very friendly, especially with adults, older kids and other dogs. She is good-natured and wants to say hello to everyone. Hope gets a little carried away with stuffy toys, so she prefers Kong or other tough chewable toys to keep her busy. Hope would love a home where someone is around a good deal of time. She's a quiet dog, but prefers the company. She is also looking for a family that can help her keep her healthy vegan lifestyle to stay youthful and allergy free in her golden years. Can anyone give this sweet beagle a home?
