Story
Bessie / Female / Approx. 1 year old / 45 lbs / Mixed Breed / Good with Dogs / Not Tested with Kids / Not Tested with Cats / From Manitoba / Fostered in Toronto Meet Bessie! Bessie is a sweetheart who is both curious and relaxed and is equal parts explorer and expert napper. Bessie survived a long, hard winter in Manitoba as a young mother to three pups and was luckily brought into care in time to save them all. Since then, this lovable pup has been enjoying the good life in her foster home and she’s ready to find her forever family! Bessie is a connoisseur of all things cozy. She absolutely adores pets (the more, the merrier), going for leisurely strolls, and keeping an eye on the neighborhood squirrels like they’re her own personal soap opera. When she’s not on squirrel watch, you can find her lounging in the yard, contemplating the mysteries of the universe (or maybe just dreaming of treats). Bessie also enjoys two to three leisurely walks a day, each lasting around 30 minutes, sprinkled with backyard breaks for some quality lounging. She’s still mastering the art of leash walking, so expect a little tugging here and there as she improves with her fosters’ help. This delightful lady is a pro at seeking affection—she’ll sneak up beside you and nuzzle into your leg like a furry little shadow. Bessie thrives on companionship and will happily follow you around the house, making sure you’re never alone (who wouldn’t want a devoted sidekick?). At night, Bessie curls up on her own bed, but let’s be real—she’d much rather snuggle with you! If you’re looking for a medium-sized dog with the heart of a big dog, Bessie is ready to fill your home (and your heart) with love. Bessie is very treat motivated and is learning commands quickly and already knows sit and stay. Bessie is fully potty trained. Bessie is friendly with everyone, including strangers, and has a particular fondness for men! While she hasn’t met any kids yet, her foster thinks she’d be fantastic with dog-savvy children. Bessie is adaptable and could thrive in various settings, but would love a house with a yard to lounge and patrol for squirrels. As long as she’s with her human (bonus points if you have a doggy sibling!), she’ll be content in any home. We recommend a cat-free home, as her squirrel obsession might lead to some unwanted "chase the fluff" adventures! Bessie is currently working through a bit of separation anxiety and gets a little nervous when her humans leave. Her fosters are helping her work through it, and with a little patience, her future family can help her feel secure while she is alone. If you have room in your heart—and maybe on your bed—Bessie would love to be your new best friend! Bessie will be spayed in the next couple of months. If she is adopted by then, the spay will be done at no cost to her adopter if done at our partner vet located in Mississauga. If you’re interested in adopting Bessie please apply at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form Bessie’s adoption fee is $850. Visit https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info for more info on mandatory supplies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kika / Female / Approximately 2.5 years old / 60 lbs / Terrier Mix / Good with Dogs / Older, Dog Savvy Children / Good with Cats / From Mexico / Fostered in Hamilton Meet Kika! Kika's foster describes her as a very loving girl who adores affection and attention. Kika came to us after she wandered into the home of a volunteer at our partner rescue badly injured and clearly the subject of mistreatment. She was in terrible shape and must have known the right place to come. They say that she rescued herself! Kika loves giving kisses and twisting into weird shapes to sit on your lap (even though she is not really the right size for a lap dog). She never stops giving her people attention. She follows her foster around the house with a very wiggly bum trying to get pets and scratches. Kika is overcoming her tragic beginning and learning how to be a great companion. She is a very sweet and deserving girl and is eager to find her forever! After attention and love from her people, Kika's favourite thing is toys. She loves playing by herself and will throw her toys around and chase them down. She is a big goof! Her favourites are toys that make loud and preferably obnoxious noises. Once her play time is done, she will lay in the middle of the room and flip herself over when someone walks by in the hopes of getting belly rubs. Kika also enjoys enrichment games and searching for treats hidden around the house. Kika is highly sensitive and still very nervous in the outside world and prefers spending time in the yard rather than out on walks. She does not like being approached by strangers and will demand her own space and may react if a stranger crosses her threshold. She reacts to loud noises, unexpected movements, and new people. Kika prefers quieter areas, she does not like busy areas and gets spooked by scooters and other vehicles. In the house, Kika has been left alone for several hours in one room of the house with food, water, and toys, and has done well. She is not usually crated and takes a few minutes to settle but is then fine on her own and not destructive. When her people are home she likes being close to them. Kika sleeps through the night on a couch or in her crate without issue. Kika is food motivated and loves to learn new things, though she can be a bit clumsy. She is fully potty trained. Kika is social with other dogs but prefers calmer, respectful dogs, and appreciates being able to get her own space if she feels overwhelmed. Generally though she seems to find the presence of another dog soothing and we think she would do great in a home with a calm, respectful dog who can reassure her and show her the ropes. Kika has been tested with cats and currently lives with one. Kika previous lived with two teenage girls who she adored and loved playing with. Kika could live in a home with older kids, aged 14+ but the energy and unpredictable nature of smaller kids would be too much for Kika. Kika's ideal home would be a patient family that can give her time to feel secure and gain her trust. Once she trusts, Kika wants to be with her people all the time. She would love a quiet home where someone is home more often than not and there are not frequent or new visitors. She would do best in a home with mostly females. Kika needs a family who understands her boundaries and is willing to advocate for her space, especially when meeting new people. Kika would do best in a home in a quieter area. Kika is a sweet girl who had an extremely difficult start to life. Kika has been given a new opportunity and is looking to join a very lucky family. If you’re interested in adopting Kika, please apply at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form Kika’s adoption fee is $250. Faris came to us all the way from the streets of Egypt, where he was found in rough shape. Despite the hardship he faced he is now thriving and full of love, ready to find his forever home! Faris’ fosters describe him as a big sweetheart, who enjoys cuddles, attention and treats. His typical day involves playing with his foster sister, soaking up the sun, going for walks, solving puzzles and trying to hold his foster’s hands while he gets pets. With people he knows, Faris is full of love and excitement. He is eager to say hi and get attention. He will even have some goofy dances to welcome you home. Faris is a bit hesitant when meeting new people. If given space and time to investigate, he will warm up fairly quickly and is the silliest, bounciest pup, with the sweetest soul. Faris has met children over the age of 10 and has done well. The unpredictability of younger children might startle Faris so we think he would do best with older, dog-savvy children. Faris is looking for a family who enjoys casual walks around the neighbourhood or adventures in the forest. A home with a yard where he can play would be ideal, and he would do best in a home outside a busy area. Faris will need a family who understands his needs for slow introductions and will respect and advocate for his boundaries. Faris would thrive as a second dog in his home. He loves the companionship and guidance of a furry friend. Playing with his foster sister is a big part of his daily routine. He would also do well in a home as a solo dog with opportunities to socialize with other dogs. While he loves other dogs, he needs time to warm up when first meeting them. Proper introductions are crucial. Faris will need a cat-free home. As an active dog, Faris requires walks, playtime and mental stimulation. He currently has two walks per day, time with puzzles and snuffle mats, and time to play with his foster sibling. He loves to engage in play, explore and practice his skills. Faris can be reactive on leash, but redirects well. Crossing the street when another dog is present helps him to avoid reactivity. Faris already knows lots of basic commands and is highly food motivated and eager to learn. Since being in foster care, Faris completed a professional training program and loved it. His instructor described him as one of the quickest learners they have ever worked with! Faris thrives when engaged in training and it helps tire him out. He would love a forever family with an interest in continuing his training. Within the home, Faris has great manners. He can be trusted alone, so long as there is no food left out for him to find. He usually sleeps in his own space, but will sometimes go to his bed and sleep beside his fosters. While he is good in his current home, he will need time to adjust and decompress in his new home. Prior to coming into care, Faris tested positive for Ehrlichia and Anaplasma, which are tick-borne infections and are not contagious. A CBC was performed to see if there is an active infection; his CBC came back indicating that there is no active infection. It is recommended that Ehrlichia positive dogs get an annual blood test to monitor and that pre-op blood work include a CBC test and platelet count be performed before any surgeries or dental extractions. Faris is currently on medications which he takes to assist with his anxiety. The medications are Sertraline (PMS) 25mg (1.5 months approx cost $68.93), Pregabalin (Teva) 50mg (3 months approx cost $242.95) and Trazodone (if using high end dose you can get 44 events for approx cost $63.17). To ensure Faris is set up for life-long success, his new family will be required to sign up for and complete 3 training classes with an approved, positive-reinforcement based professional trainer (proof required). Details to be discussed upon application. If you’re interested in fostering with the intention of adopting, please apply at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form The adoption fee for Faris has been generously sponsored. Applicants will only be required to purchase supplies necessary for his care prior to adoption and will have their deposit refunded after finalizing the adoption. Follow Lua’s journey on IG: @adoptablelua Lua / Female / 1 year old / 35 lbs / Boxer Mix / Good with calm dogs / Good with cats / No children/ Female Only Home / From Mexico / Fostered in Oakville Meet Lua! Lua came to us from Mexico, where she lived in a vacant lot with no roof or shelter. She gave birth to a litter of four puppies while tied up to the fence of the lot. Our wonderful partners in Mexico cut the chain she was tied to and took the mama and her puppies to safety. Lua is one of these puppies, rescued from a life of neglect and ready to find a loving home. Lua is a sweet girl with the most expressive eyes. Her fosters describe her as affectionate, curious and playful. Lua adores her people and is always ready to snuggle. She even believes she is tiny and will make herself fit on your lap, no matter how awkwardly she has to lay. Lua would love nothing more than to be in a home where she can be showered with love and attention. Lua is bestfriends with her trusted humans. She will stay close by and can be protective in nature. With new people Lua prefers to assess, sniff and take her time. Once she feels comfortable she will shower them with the same love and affection. Lua is a bit more nervous around men, and is working with her fosters to learn that they can be safe too. Lua would do well in a home that is a female only household. Lua has met older children and has shown signs of nervousness around them. We think she'd do best in a home that is kid-free. She could eventually live in a home with respectful, dog-savvy children but this will take time. With patience, decompression time and support Lua will show her loving nature to her humans. Lua is looking for a home in a quieter neighbourhood. City sounds and passing cars are new to her and make her feel nervous. A home with a yard where she can play would be ideal, but as long as she has access to green space she will do well. Lua is the type of dog that will thrive wherever her humans are, as she loves to be part of the pack. Lua is currently looking for a home where she is the only dog. She has had positive interactions with other dogs in the past, but can be defensive when sharing her space. Lua will set boundaries for herself and does not seem bothered by other dogs she passes on walks. With proper introductions Lua would enjoy socializing outside of her home. Lua currently lives with a cat and does well. She has shown both curiosity towards the cat and respect for the cat's boundaries. As a young girl, Lua will require lots of outlets for her energy. She currently gets two walks each day. Lua is doing well on leash so far. She loves to sniff and explore as she goes. Lua will stop when a car goes by, and tends to avoid other people, but she is gaining more confidence each day. Lua is very good at looking to her trusted humans for reassurance while on walks. Indoors, Lua enjoys enrichment activities and is learning the joy of playing with toys. Lua is making great progress with her basic training. She enjoys learning and making her humans proud, so working with her is great! Lua is crate-trained, spending time in one when she is home alone, and overnight. She is housetrained, but her new family should be prepared for a transition period and possible accidents. Life indoors is new for Lua, but she is learning her house manners fairly quickly. Lua prefers to be where her people are, but will settle in adjacent rooms to nap, or chew a toy. Lua is a sweet girl with the biggest heart, waiting to find her forever family that is ready to give her the time and attention to learn how to be the best companion. If you're interested in adopting Lua, please apply at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form Lua's adoption fee is $250. Phylis is a very special little lady in search of a patient and understanding forever home. She has a past that has left her quite nervous and wary of strangers. That said, once she warms up to her trusted people, she will let her lovely personality shine through and is incredibly playful and affectionate. Her fosters describe her as curious, independent, loving, and very smart. She is super cute and gets very goofy when playing with her toys. Once she is worn out she will climb up next to her trusted people for a couch cuddle and is very affectionate when she gets what she wants. Phylis currently lives downtown but would really thrive in a less busy environment. She recently had a vacation outside the city and loved it. She thrived exploring trails and was much more confident in the open space and really came out of her shell. She would do best in a rural or suburban setting with access to parks, trails, and other outdoor space. Phylis loves and enjoys all kinds of enrichment. She hunts her kibble in enrichment boxes and around the house. She likes to toss her stuffies and chase them (she also likes to remove the stuffing). She loves to eat, and loves to chew and shred chewy bones. She loves going out in the yard for sniffs. Once she's comfortable, she will ask for cuddles and scratches, but always on her terms. Phylis is good in the house and has been left for up to five hours without issue. She will usually just nap on the couch. She's crate trained and may hang out in her crate but is not destructive so she is generally left out and gated away from the front door/hallway noises for her comfort as she is sensitive to hallway noises. Phylis sleeps in her foster's bed and will go between the bed and the couch as it suits her. Phylis knows basic commands and is very food motivated and eager to learn. Phylis is fully potty trained. Phylis shows interest in meeting other dogs but can also be reactive if approached too quickly. She currently lives in a condo and gets stressed if she has to pass a dog in the hallway so her fosters try to avoid as much as possible. Once outside where she has more space, Phylis is much less bothered by being near dogs and hardly ever reacts and will simply move away from strange dogs or people if she doesn’t want to interact. Phylis is by nature wary of meeting new people and dogs and will take time to warm up to new people and dogs. She is curious though and has made a few doggie and people friends in her building so with consistent and calm meetings she is definitely capable of positive interactions with other dogs and people. Phylis is currently suspicious and anxious in new environments and when meeting new people, and she will need ongoing help developing self-confidence. She would benefit by positive interactions and slow exposure to calm and confident dogs and people, and by time spent in open spaces such as nature trails and parks. She is looking for an adopter who has experience with anxious and shy dogs, or who is open to coaching. She will need an adopter committed to allowing her to decompress and supporting her. Phylis is looking for a patient and quiet home that will treat her in a calm and gentle manner and help temper her quirks. She would do best in a house with a yard in a quiet suburban or rural area, and she would do best in a home with a single person or couple, and without a lot of people going in and out. She would thrive in a rural environment or with access to trails and outdoor spaces. Phylis has previously lived with another dog and did well but will require proper and slow introductions. She would also do well in a home as the only dog. Phylis has not been tested with children and is looking for a home without children. Phylis has not been tested with cats since arriving into foster care and would do best in a home without cats. During Phylis’ trial adoption, Fetch + Releash will be offering behavioural support to her potential adopters to help her transition to a new environment. If you're interested in fostering with the intention of adopting Phylis, please apply at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form Phylis' adoption fee is $250. Sweet Ana was found by our rescue partners struggling to survive on the streets while battling a severe skin infection. Sadly, people misunderstood her condition and deemed it contagious, leading to her being mistreated and shunned. Eventually, the local pound was called to take her away, but a kind person brought her to the shelter instead. Ana’s foster describes her as sweet and calm most of the time. She loves going on her walks and does well on a leash. She loves playing with her toys, as well as her canine foster sister. She is super sweet and a lot of fun when her goofy side comes out. She is very comfortable with people she knows and people she is meeting for the first time, however, she will bark when someone new enters her home. Ana gets two walks a day and enrichment activities. She walks well on the leash and is comfortable in the car, ready for her next adventure. Ana is selectively reactive to other dogs while on leash but is making great progress in this area. Now, she mostly ignores other dogs but may at times react. Her fosters have been working on this with her and she has certainly shown improvement. Ana is potty trained but may need an adjustment period when she moves to a new home. Ana is learning basic commands like paw, sit, and wait. Her adopter will need to continue basic training. Ana is not crate-trained and has free roam of the home. She has been left alone for 6 hours with no issues. She is not destructive in the home but she's very interested in food and will investigate anything left out. For her safety, all food needs to be stored out of reach. Ana sleeps through the night in her bed. Ana’s ideal family would be one that can include her in daily activities, whether it be a good walk or a good snuggle. She is flexible and adaptable in her needs; she just needs someone committed to whom she can show her love to. Ana is a testament to resilience and love. This sweet girl has a heart full of affection and a longing for a forever family. Interacting with humans and her furry companions brings her so much joy. Her moderate energy level makes her an ideal partner for long walks and cozy cuddle sessions. Ana shows her love by following you around, seeking belly rubs, and simply enjoying your company. Ana has shown prey drive toward cats and is looking for a cat-free home at this time. She has not been tested with children so we suggest that she is adopted into a child-free home. Ana has shown signs of protectiveness towards her foster parents and Ana will require proper and slow introductions when it comes to welcoming new people into the home as she can get overly excited. If you're interested in fostering with the intention of adopting Ana, please apply at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form Ana's adoption fee is $250.
