Story
Tank turned 8 on December 9th, he is an amazing dog with a lot of love to give. He loves to cuddle, and even at his age still loves to play for short periods. He listens well, and picks up on changes easily. He really is an amazing dog and it pains me to be looking for a home for him. We have had him since he was a puppy. However, he can have an aggressive side to him, he has at times in the past shown aggressive behavior in growls of warnings, he was attacked and hospitalized by another dog and since he has been more on guard and recently nipped my mother over a treat on the floor and growled at another visitor over food on the floor. This mixed with rare additional signs of aggression makes us too worried for our new infant twins. He has always been great with kids, but we don’t recommend him being in a home with young children or other dogs. We simply can’t take the very slight chance with the babies in the house who will soon be toddlers.

Story
Meet Marco – He is a survivor. This is a story that will break your heart. Marco came to us with another dog (who has since been adopted). On a frigid January afternoon, Marco was found chained to a tree (with the other dog). The ground was frozen, with no grass in sight. Two metal buckets were left for the dogs. One with frozen filthy water and the other empty. Both dogs were emaciated and hovering to try and collect any heat they could from the frozen tree stump. If that wasn’t enough, it is only due to a house-fire these (2) dogs were discovered. The fire department went to search around the home for anyone else left in the house, instead they found (2) dogs tied to a tree in the yard. Thankfully, Marco is with us now, and ready for a true loving home. Marco is very sweet with people he trusts but due to his past, he will need a savvy owner that can work with his guarding and show him the ropes on how to live in a home. Once he was removed from the property, he started to show some guarding behavior around his food (we can`t really blame him!) Marco will need a home that will continue training so he can decompress from shelter life and begin the next chapter of his life “Adopted”. He is appropriate for an adult-only home with no other animals. With everything this poor boy has been through, he still looks for love from humans, which is a great example of why dogs are the best creatures ever! Story
Wally is a sweet and playful 7.5-year-old terrier mix who is looking for a loving home to call his own. Though, his journey through life has not been an easy one so far. He initially came to us in 2019 and was covered in wounds which our medical team quickly treated. Since then, he had left the facility 2x, but ultimately wound up back here in December 2024, through no fault of his own. Nowadays, he`s a big fan of playtime! Wally loves all kinds of toys—balls, ropes, squeaky toys, and more—but he can be a bit protective of them. He’ll happily trade toys for other toys or tasty treats, making him a fun and engaging playmate. Wally is a bit timid with new people while in his kennel, but once he’s out, he’s much more open and friendly. He’s great with basic commands like `sit` and `down` and is always ready to please. On the leash, Wally can pull a little but listens well to corrections. Because of his energetic and playful nature, Wally would do best in a quiet, low-traffic home with adults or teens over 17, as he is a timid dog who enjoys a low-key life. Come meet Wally today and see if he’s the perfect fit for your family!!If you are interested in learning more on Wally, please contact our placement team:E: adoption@hempsteadny.govE: foster@hempsteadny.govE: rescue@hempsteadny.govT: 516.785.5220#adoptdontshop #dogsofinstagram #dogsofig #adoptadog #bruisednotbroken #tohasdogs #dogsofny #dogsofnyc #dogsofli #adoptadogny #lookingforahome #longislanddogs #longislanddogmom #longislanddogdad #adoptionistheonlyoption #pittielove #pittiesrock #pitsrule #ifitaintpit #adoptables #adoptarescuedog #rescuedogsrock

Story
*Rescue Placement Only* Dexter is a 4.5-year-old retriever mix with a story that has so far, had no happy ending. After multiple placement attempts, Dexter ultimately finds himself back at the shelter where he started. Dexter is friendly with people he is comfortable with, but even with that, exhibits quirky behavior from time to time. While Dexter is generally cautious around strangers, he is social with other dogs, displaying tolerance and lower energy during dog-to-dog interactions- However- he may guard his people, once he becomes attached. He has good leash skills and knows basic cues such as sit and paw. Overall, Dexter will need an adult only home with continued training, structure and management of his quirks so that he can finally have the happy ending he deserves. He`s a sweet and gentle dog once he feels comfortable, and he thrives in a secure, predictable environment. Story
Tucker is an 8-year-old hound mix with a sweet and cautious personality. Tucker has not had it very easy. He was surrendered to us back in 2018 due to an incident in the home. He stayed at the shelter until Feb. 2024, but ultimately wound up back at the shelter in December, 2024 (due to no fault of his own.) In fact, we have seen great improvement in Tuckers behavior! Tucker tends to make wary eye contact, but shows a softer demeanor around familiar faces! When it comes to handling, Tucker is cautious but allows gentle touch from those he trusts. Tucker is playful during interactions, and though he doesn’t show interest in toys, he is still a joy to engage with. Tucker warms up slowly to strangers, especially with the help of treats. He knows basic cues such as sit and paw, and while he has good leash skills, he may be better suited for a home with adults only. Tucker’s ideal home would be one where his cautious nature is respected, and he can thrive with understanding and patience. He enjoys time with people he trusts and is a sweet companion to those who appreciate his gentle ways.If you are interested in learning more contact our placement team at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter:E: Adoption@hempsteadny.govE: Foster@hempsteadny.govE: Rescue@hempsteadny.govT. 516.785.5220#Adoptme #adoptionistheoption #takemehome #adoption #rescue #rescueismyfavoritebreed #opttoadopt #longislanddogs #longislanddogparents #adotions #dog #doggo #dogsofnewyork #newyorkcitydogs #NYCdogs #nycrescuedog #rescuedog #nyadoptable #longislandanimalshelter #animalshelter #shelterdogs #shelterdog #shelterdogsrock #rescuedogsarethebest

Story
It`s so hard to follow Zena`s back story, but from what we gathered, it seems that her owner was evicted and left her behind, tied up to a tree with no food or water. We are heartbroken for this sweet girl, but we know her forever family is out there somewhere. Zena is very friendly with people, and is being recommended for a home with kids 13 and up. This 9 1/2 year old golden girl is very petite, weighing in at 54 slender pounds. She is house trained, crate trained, and knows `sit`, `down` and `touch`. Zena is looking for a household the will provide her with physical and mental stimulation (she loves to play & do treat mats). She is also a total couch potato inside, so what we are are saying is that she is the perfect mix of chill and `let`s play!`. Zena is in need of a solo pet home. She is currently in temporary foster care and being a rock star, but still searching for her forever home!Contact us to find out how to meet Zena!T: 516.785.5220E: adoption@hempsteadny.gov E: foster@hempsteadny.govE: rescue@hempsteadny.gov#adoptdontshop #dogsofinstagram #dogsofig #adoptmeny #bruisednotbroken #tohasdogs #dogsofny #dogsofnyc #dogsofli #adoptadogny #lookingforahome #longislanddogs #longislanddogmom #longislanddogdad #adoptionistheonlyoption #pittielove #pittiesrock #pitsrule
