Story
Cameron is an 8 yr old male border collie/retriever mix that came into our program a few months ago. His owner had died, and no other family members were able to take him in – so Cameron lived outside for 2 months on a tieout, and a kind neighbor fed him until a rescue could be found. When Cameron first came, he did not want to come in the house and he was leery of the cat. He now gladly comes in the house, but always checks to see where the cat is. Cameron gets along well with the resident dog and the two older dogs that visited. The dogs like to be in the front yard where they can watch people and dogs walk by. Cameron would enjoy the companionship of another mature medium-size dog. Cameron and the cat usually ignore each other. Any children in the home should be at least 12 yr old - younger kids might play too rough with him, and toddlers might climb on him. Cameron has been invited up on the couch and bed - he has only been on the bed two times – just to check it out - he seems to prefer sleeping on the hard wood floor where it is cooler or on a throw rug. He has also only been on the couch twice, so if you are looking for a dog that doesn’t go up on the furniture, Cameron could be your match. He is good meeting new people, and likes attention. He got out of the yard once when the gate was not securely closed. He went for a brisk walk down the block, eventually going into the fenced play ground area of the neighborhood school. When he saw the leash in his foster’s hand, he gladly came and was walked home. He had ignored any calling of his name, probably because he hadn’t learned his new name yet. The dogs are in and out of the house many times during the day as the yard is fenced in and safe for them. When Cameron is asked if he wants to go “outside” he sort of excitedly barks and wags his tail and heads for the door (otherwise he is a relatively quiet dog) and he does ask to go out by coming to you and whimpering. He rides in the car nicely (needs an assist to get in), although it is probably a new experience for him. Cameron was very aware of the Fourth of July fireworks sounds, but didn’t seem to be overly upset or nervous. He was very happy to be inside with the other animals. Cameron has one unique habit. He is fascinated with shadows and reflections of shiny things. It could be that he had been tied up most of his life, so that was one thing he used to amuse himself. He has spent a fair amount of his life on a tie-out, so now we would like him to have a fenced yard to move around in. Cameron is neutered and vaccinated. In March of this year he had routine blood chemistries done that were clinically normal, and in that same month had a dental cleaning with one extraction. In May , he had a lump on his left back foot removed - pathology wasn't cancer - it was a bunch of hair, skin, & other miscellaneous tissue they couldn't really identify (this is all healed up). His microchip is registered to Second Chance. He has some muscular atrophy over the left hip area- likely osteoarthritis, and is on fish oil and glucosamine supplements (and should continue on these). Also, he should not gain any weight – he weighs 52#, which the vet says is about the maximum weight for him. Arthritic hips make it difficult for him to negotiate the steps – he just doesn’t have the strength in his back end – so he needs a single level home with only 1 or 2 entry steps. He can’t jump up on furniture, or into the car. If there is another dog in the home, it should not rough-house or jump on him to play. Low impact exercise – such as walking or swimming, is encouraged. His adoption fee is $225. Call 651-771-5662 if you would like to meet Cameron. He is a gentle, mellow, well behaved dog.

Story
Misty is a 2 year old Corgi/Shepherd mix that weighs about 30 lbs. She came from a South Dakota reservation where she was abandoned when her owners moved and left her behind to fend for herself. She was fearful out there by herself & people were trying to catch her to no avail. She was eventually caught after she was weakened by a porcupine attack. She had lots of quills in her face, head, neck & one in the corner of her eye. We were notified by a contact in SD & we agreed to help her. We asked that she be brought to the nearest Vet who sedated her & pulled out a lot of quills, put her on antibiotics & medicated eye ointment. Then transport was arranged for her to come to Second Chance. We immediately brought her to one of the clinics we use and more quills were removed under sedation. There were many trips to the Vet to monitor her eye, which recovered nicely, and to continue to pull quills that were working their way out of her. Despite the long & painful recovery from the embedded quills & healing from a previous broken leg, Misty is a happy girl now & absolutely loves everyone she meets. She is a real people dog & loves to be by her foster mom or any visitors that stop by. She is housetrained and has not gotten into anything when left alone loose in the house. She rarely barks & she know sit, come, and stay. She comes when called, likes to go for walks,& likes to go for car rides. She does pull some on leash so she needs a little more leash work. She is afraid of dogs that approach too fast - so she needs to have slow introductions when meeting other dogs. She would also be fine as an only dog. Misty would make an excellent companion for someone who wants a very sweet, devoted dog. She has been spayed, vaccinated, and her heartworm test and tick profile are both negative. Her microchip is registered to Second Chance. The adoption fee is $375. If you would like to meet Misty, please call 651-771-5662.

Story
Sergio came to Second Chance when his previous owner passed away and the extended family wanted him relocated with a rescue. His paperwork has him as Schnauzer/terrier mix. His foster says there's some "special" breed thrown in for interest. He's 5 years old, neutered, up to date on shots and in March of this year had a dental (with extractions). His heartworm test and tick profile are negative at this time, but he will need to stay on the heartworm preventative for a year due to his southern history (he comes from Texas, where heartworm disease is more prevalent). After that, you can follow your vet's recommendations - some recommend staying on the heartworm preventative year round, others will agree on just during the mosquito season. Sergio is microchipped, currently weighs slightly over 22#, is housebroken and crate trained. Sergio loves to play! He will return thrown toys just to have them thrown again. The more squeaky the toy, the better. We usually have two going at once, one thrown and one ready to throw as soon as he gets back. He has some basic training. Pulls on the leash, but not overly hard. Some practice will help that. A fenced in yard is a MUST to help meet his exercise needs and allows for play time with toys and other dogs. When it's feeding time he is not food aggressive and does not go after the resident dog's plate until she is finished. Treats are always appreciated and he has a gentle mouth, not grabby. If watching TV or reading is your thing, he's happy to rest his head on your lap. Sergio likes being by his people and will "moan" lowly if he thinks you forgot him, or if you're slow getting out of bed in the morning. He barks when greeting new people and appropriately outdoors. He is easily quieted. An apartment may or may not be a good fit. Sergio seems fine with children he has met, but would most likely knock over smaller ones due to his greeting and chunky body build. Update from the foster: "We had a large family gathering on Saturday and he was great!! Our yard is fenced but he stayed near the group, loved on everyone, rough-housed if people started it, let my 2 year grand daughter hug and snuggle him! He did beg when people were eating, but so did I. He does not bolt for the door or gate. The low moan is gone. I felt he was very well mannered and behaved at the Chuck and Don's a few weeks ago. I hope he finds a home home soon, such a great family dog." He does seem to shed a small amount but regular brushing and coat cleaning keeps this to a minimum. He does have the coarse hair of a Schnauzer and he has been recently groomed. His adoption fee is $375. If you have questions, or would like to meet Sergio, please call 651-771-5662.

Story
Maverick: Are you looking for a loyal, loving and fun-loving canine companion? If you are, Maverick may be just what you’ve been waiting for! Maverick is an 8-year-old, male, retriever-shepherd mix. Maverick came into our program in the fall of 2022, as an owner surrender when his family was no longer able to care for him. Maverick had lived with his family since he was a puppy and has been patiently waiting for his forever family. Maverick loves all people, and is great with children …. He is a big guy at almost 90# so we suggest children be approximately 6 years or older. Maverick is very sweet, gentle, loves to go for walks, play with toys, roam around the fenced yard at his foster home, play with his foster dog siblings, rides amazingly in the car and is always willing to hang out with you and catch up on your favorite TV programs too. Maverick is crate trained for a full workday, but is such a great dog that he doesn’t need to be crated when left home alone. Maverick is house trained and will let you know he needs to go outside. Maverick barks appropriately both inside the home and out in the yard. Maverick has gotten along with all dogs he’s met while in the program and could be an only dog, or paired with another dog(s). Maverick is currently in a foster home with 5 other dogs that range in size from a 15# to 70# and adjusts his interactions with each of them based on their individual personalities. He loves to run and wrestle with the bigger labs in the foster home and is particularly gentle with the older pug in the foster home who is 12 ½ years old, almost blind, deaf and has mobility issues. Maverick could live in a home with shared walls, or in a single family home …. As long as he gets daily exercise he’s a content canine companion. Maverick is up to date on his distemper and rabies vaccinations, heart worm tested negative and his microchip is registered to Second Chance. The adoption fee for Maverick is $195. If you would like to learn more about Maverick, or set up a time to meet him, please call us at 651-771-5662.

Story
Meet Eula! This sweet girl is ready for her next chapter. Eula came into rescue from a large-scale overcrowding case. She is super sweet and obedient but also has a small desire to escape. She likes to scout the yard for places where she thinks she can dig out once you catch her pawing at the ground she runs back to you or stops what she’s doing. With time, routine, and comfort we are confident she will. She’s excellent in the crate. No issues in the house. Lower energy. Loves to just lay at the back door and watch things in the yard. Eula has done well with both dog and cat foster siblings. Medical History: Before Eula entered rescue her left ear was removed, and she has significant hearing loss on the left side. Her right ear and hearing on the right is in-tact. This does not impact her daily living and quality of life, and we do not expect future medical treatments related to the lost ear. *More information and photos added over time. Story
Meet Milo, an adorable 13-year-old senior dog! Milo and Daphne came into rescue as their previous owner passed away. Although he might be a bit older, Milo still has lots of love and affection to give to his forever family. He would be the most successful in a home with no cats, dogs, and with a fence, preferably a privacy fence. He does not jump fences, but does bark and growl at other dogs so it would be best if he does not have to interact with other dogs. Milo is the perfect companion for someone looking for a more low-key, yet affectionate dog.He loves to cuddle and snuggle. He is used to being alone at home. Milo is very loyal and will stick by your side through thick and thin. He would do best in a calm and quiet home where he can take life at his own pace. Milo may have a hard time getting along with other dogs, but he's sure to steal your heart with his charming personality and loving nature! He is not a fan of fireworks and thunderstorms so he does have an anti-anxiety medication he takes as needed. *More information and photos added over time.
